Someone had grabbed my forum name on Exalted before I could. I sent them a tell and they told me they were grabbing it for me. I didn't even know them so that was pretty cool of them. They released it and I was able to get it for myself. I guess there are some kind people out there.

No-one but me can be "Samuel_Tow" here on the forums, though I suppose is someone really hated himself, he could be "Samuel Tow." I have a Samuel Tow on Victory that no-one's ever going to take from me since I don't plan to delete the character ever, but if someone wants it on another server and gets it before me, I really have no say in the matter.
This is true, and if whomever has Carnifax is playing them and having a ball (hopefully as an Illusion/Time controller or something) then more power too them.

At the same time there's nothing wrong with politely asking the person with the name if they are willing to give it up for you if it means a lot to you.

I think if someone was bragging about it in a chat channel then that counts as griefing and they should lose that characters and possibly banned. This is not the kind of behaviour that should be encouraged or ignored imo. Obviously very difficult to prove.

Alternatively they could adopt a stricter naming reserving policy on the VIP Server.

Glad I've never used my forum name as a character. But in general this thread make me sad. Don't be a griefer man

Uh. I hope. My opinion of human nature has taken a lot of hits in the past few years so I freely admit that I could be wrong.

And of course, if someone was really set on having a name that I currently have reserved for a future character, I'm willing to consider releasing it.

Then again, to my knowledge, I don't think I grabbed any name that was high profile. At least, not intentionally.
This for me too.

I reserved a few names on Exalted for characters I plan to make in the near future using the upcoming Street Justice and Titan Weapon powersets. I'm pretty sure they didn't "belong" to anyone I'd recognize here on the forums.

As for this idea of people squatting famous forum names I think it's pretty silly and sad. I have far better things to do with my time than to ruin another person's day over something like that. Good luck to those who are dealing with this kind of thing.

Not at all. This is the proper way to proceed with it, I'd say. I've found that people are a lot more reasonable when you approach them politely than when you yell at them, so I'm definitely with you on that count.

Just lolz

Also... Westley now you know how it feels to have your global handle stolen simply because you were European and some trial account in the US got your global like 3 years after you joined.

suck it up!

Perhaps a better 'new VIP server' strategy would have been to unlock 1 character slot per day on that server until all "free" slots are available.

Might have limited the impact of squatters a bit....

You're not a Nobody, Honest. People know your name... it's just that no one wanted it...

Oh that doesn't sound right

You are Correct... Being a NoBody does pay off. It allows you to get away with so much and no one ever suspects it was you.... HAHAHAHhahah...!

They will never stop the real NoBody!

In fact, I would think a significant number of people are doing that. Your logic appears faulty, here.

Also, people sometimes simply change their mind. Witness the OP: one day he is quitting over the EULA, the next day, not so much. I think several people were wondering why the OP was complaining at all, since he had so prominently announced his intentions.
So, you managed to "punish" Westley for his drama? You are so COOL!

Yeah, that's pretty well laced with sarcasm. And no, saying "If he just asked me nice I'd give it to him" (which you don't actually promise to do, despite intimating that it might be true) does not make it cool.

Then again, if you cared about that you wouldn't have done it in the first place. So, uh, bravo, I guess. You really showed him!

Ok, so... to recap:

Westley's not Philotic Knight on the VIP server.
But somebody IS Philotic Knight.
And somebody IS Arcanaville
But Arcanaville is not that somebody.

Who is somebody?
That name's taken too, but I guess I could still be "somebody special" on the VIP server.
It also looks like somebody's nobody, but I could be "nobody special". That may be more accurate.
After all this squatting, is anything still available?
Has anybody tried to be everybody?
Anyone?

I ran into a similar problem with someone taking the name "Obsidius" on Exalted. However, instead of making a public debacle out of it, I'm attempting to contact that person to see what's up. Not that I plan to play on Exalted much, but I like to have options

Otherwise, I have a magnificent plan in store that I might launch sooner or later. And no, this plan doesn't involve harassment, slander, or other things that would violate the EULA. Not that anyone reads that these days

No One's taken Anyone from Anything Lately, if that helps.

I think it goes along with the name sitting that's already done on other servers. I can only speak of Virtue, but when you know there's forum regulars who have admitted to be sitting on names the others want, but only plan to release them if they get another name they want or some in game compensation...well then...why would Exalted be any different and why would anybody joining the Exalted server not continue on with it?

"Oh look, here's a name someone will want, I shall take it."

Westley just happens to have a name someone knows at least one person will want (Westley) and so they took it.

But Johnny had a point with the name thread. Some who had their name taken were ones who said "I don't need any specific name as I can just come up with a new one."

That said, yeeeaaah, it seems low, but then the one's doing it weren't likely the ones who started out on name sitting to begin with.

I don't think this is a case of being "popular". This is more of as case of accruing a large post count largely of snarky posts.

I'm glad I had the chance to log in just as the server was coming online. Not that anyone would want my name since no one used it up until early 08'. Still I dont think it would feel good to have someone else running around named Hero Alpha even as generic as it sounds.

Someone swiped several of mine as well straight out of my signature. At least I have them on Virtue. I've never been super protective of the names (or else I wouldn't post them in my sig) but it pretty much seals the deal on me not moving to the new server.

[Obviously this is revenge for me having scored the name 'Catechism' on Virtue, a name far too self serious for me to ever use. ]
