Who's the Jerk...
I'm shocked that Grey Pilgrim was not taken when I re-rolled him as a Fire/Fire Scrapper on Exalted yesterday. Shocked, I say!
Not only am I a famous forum person (yeah, right... heh), but it's a fictional character! I couldn't get Grey Pilgrim or anything Gandalf related on other MMO sites.

Story Arc: Belated Justice, #88003
Synopsis: Explore the fine line between justice and vengeance as you help a hero of Talos Island bring his friend's murderer to justice.
Grey Pilgrim: Fire/Fire Tanker (50), Victory
Also, who's the jerk who didn't try to steal the name Chad Gulzow-Man? I'm a little insulted.

I'm insulted as well.
Texas Justice wasn't Stolen/NameCamped/TakenToActuallyBePlayed either. EDIT: This makes me feel that I'm more unimportant than what I already believed. |
Shouldn't have to wait too long. I hear that guy has no standards.
Did anyone expect this NOT to happen? One server that everyone would want to be on, and first come, first served?
Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

I'd say Golden Girl (as it was mentioned someone got her name) is a generic name. And still, no, not griefing. Even if they go around acting like an ***-hat all day with that name.
First thing that seperates them from anyone on the boards, the global. And really, I don't think most of the players out there know the people on the forums from a hole in the wall. |
Me, I'm looking at the guy(s) that snagged 4 versions of my global as my fans. Whether they like it or not.
We did, actually, do a little testing out.
First thing that came to mind was that there was some new sensitivity to capitalization - so I tried making the name in all caps, or with a different letter capitalized - no go. One thing that was interesting - I don't normally see the name - or a speech bubble - when sending private tells. But it was doing it with this. (So the tell would show up above my head, saying Name: Message.) But, yeah, they're deleted, and the person that wanted it held has it now. |

Maybe they assumed your name was taken already cuz of it's coolness factor. Did you check to see if "Death Penalty", "Lethal Injection", or even "Electric Chair" were taken? How bout "Hangin' Judge"? Seems they would also be good alternative names for Texas Justice.
|
Also, I find that 3 of my other names are unused as well that are taken on other servers, even one that uses an unusual spelling. I didn't check all of my names, just 5 of them. Only one was taken and it's not one I'd play anywhere but Justice. Actually, TJ is likely to be my only character on Exalted that gets played so possibly my only character there.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
Black Pebble is my new hero.
in response to the Thread Title, the answer is: Steve Martin.
@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.
I wouldn't say my name was that popular , but it was taken, a quick /getglobalname informed me that is was in fact someone who played on my home server and believe to be he's home server as well.
I'm not sure if he was aware that I would know it was him, but as it stands it looks like he may have left the game and took my name with him?
Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.
Slazenger, Area51, Area53, Area54, Erruption, Mind Plague, Thresher, Sheath, Broadside, Debt
Nobody grabbed Mandu. Then again I probably couldn't pay people to take my name.
Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!
At least i don't have to worry about anyone taking my forum name.

Weirdly enough, I was able to get both TonyV and Tony V locked. Not that I think it's such a nifty keen name, it's actually one that I honestly think is generic enough that it shouldn't be "reservable." But since I'm an administrator of several popular CoH-related web sites, I don't want people impersonating me. If some other TonyV is running around out there doing missions and whatever, more power to them. If they're trying to get users' information on the Titan Network, that's a problem, and I'll pull out whatever stops I can to get them smacked down.
Name-squatting non-generic names is griefing, plain and simple. I certainly hope that the moderation department come down hard and fast on people taking names of well-known people. And yes, it most certainly is possible to draw that line, they do it all the time for infringing names or costumes.
Until/unless they do, not to put too fine a point on it, I'll be avoiding Exalted. For all the talk how awesome the CoH user base is, these types of incidents remind us how scummy some among our ranks are, not a good sign as CoH:Freedom is launching. I think it's altogether telling that as people have been wary about the potential negative impact that "freepers" will have on the game, this is going on on the so-called "VIP" server during the head start, when there aren't even any "freeper" accounts on yet.
So although I hope that the GMs will come down hard on this practice, I think it's really pathetic that it's even an issue.
