    The times we had

To the OP: Some good points and some I disagree with.

I never had many issues with "leet" players in this game. They were few and far between, and the comment/star rating system helped me avoid them.

On the other hand, games like WoW and GW were dominated by them. You couldnt go on a dungeon raid in WoW without someone dissing you about your armor or DPS metering you. In GW, you were required to ping your build and kicked if you didnt fit one of the cookie cutter builds. So, no, I dont agree with you on this point. ( forum posters are another matter altogether, if that's what you're referring to )

As far as soloing, this was the most solo friendly game I've ever seen. You would level more slowly, yes, but that's your choice. I prefer rewards for teaming.

Can't really comment on the pvp aspect, since I never participated beyond CoV beta. In order for a game to be successful with pvp, it needs to be designed for that aspect from the beginning. PVP was retro-fitted onto the game, and the poor results speak volumes. PVP should never have been an addition to the game IMO.
  2. I wont miss:

    1. Masterminds - interesting concept, but poorly implemented.
And the sound effects from demon summoning and wolfs drove me nuts.

    2. Cave /Pancake Rooms/Orenbega Maps

    3. The overly restrictive name filter in both character creation and AE.

    4. AE Rating Snipers

    5. PLing.

    6. BAFs and more BAFS and more BAFs....

    7. The BAF cutscene with the 3 rather anatomically explicit villains.

    8. The help and LFG channels hijacked by spammers.

    9. Stagnation in the older zones with no attempt by the dev team to revamp them.

    10. RMT spammers

    11. Praetoria - what an incredible waste of developer time.

The problem with CO is the attitude. The graphics, all the mission content, and it seems the entire world exists to parody the superhero genre. Almost every mission contains a winking joke about how lame everything is. "Ha, hah, isn't this lame? Everything you accomplish, it's so lame. Isn't it hilarious how lame you are?" It's like playing a pen-and-paper game with an annoying sarcastic hipster as your Game Master. The makers of CO are jaded and resentful of the superhero genre, and it shows.

An occasional joke at the genre's expense is okay. But CO is just overladen with them. If you're not going to take your genre seriously, pick a different one. (Maybe they did, with Star Trek Online. I don't know, I haven't tried it yet. Did they take space opera seriously?)

I have no idea how they thought that attitude was a good idea. It certainly doesn't encourage players. The players that kind of vicious sarcasm *does* attract...well, that's another problem.
If I had to guess, they probably got that from WoW. There were quite a few missions in WoW that I considered degrading to my character. Picked up any Poo lately?

    Scrappers

I never like playing brutes because of that friggin fury bar. Never could get the hang of maxing it out, and frankly I prefer the scrapper which is at max DPS straight out of the box.
  5. I hope he doesn't, I'd feel sorry for him.

"You're hamburger, and I'm filet minon."

    She's an egotistical self-centered little <fill in the blank>.

From DAOC: Many of the combat mechanics are similar.
DAOC had a PVP model of defending a frontier, with capturable forts. WoW does much the same thing with some of their pvp maps, although there are limits on the number of participants. DAOC, by the time I had left was very much ruled by gear, although it didnt start out that way.

From CoH, they stole the concept of badges and called them achievements.
  7. I find it amusing that similar games are called "Wow Clones".
Wow has created nothing original that I'm aware of. Virtually every design concept embodied in WoW was borrowed and adapted from other games such
as Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, and even CoH.

WoW itself is a big monstrous clone of other games.

Having said that, I do agree that so many of the other games out there are so unoriginal.
    Orcs, Elfs, and Dwarfs abound.
    The Tank/DPS/Healer trinity still rules.
Equipment defines your characters abilities and appearance.

And it is truly a shame that the one game that broke away from this model is being shut down.
  8. I dont consider combat in this game to be any more simplified than what they have in GW2 or WoW. GW2 = 4 offensive powers, 8 if you like constantly switching weapons in combat, which I don't. And one of those 4 offensive powers I would consider an auto attack.

I happen to like the emphasis on AE attacks in CoH vs other games which primarily focus on single target attacks.

There's a reason why Virtue's population eventually exceeded Freedom's. PUGs on Freedumb are a nightmare of immature players that play poorly. By comparison, Virtue is PUG heaven. We tend to be friendly, mature and intelligent. You will have fun here. Transfer today.
Funny, I leveled one toon to 50 on Virtue, and could rarely find a team.
    PUGs appeared to be non-existant.

Have the basics be as it is; you write an arc first as a text file locally, then publish it when done. However, basic published arcs have a significantly reduced XP/INF rate, and drop nothing but inspirations. The rate should be high enough so that players don't feel that they're wasting their time, but still low enough that even the most lucrative farm earns less than running radio/paper missions. As a pulled-out-of-my-rear estimate, 50-60%.

    However, players who feel that they have created a gem of an arc can pay a small fee, maybe $5-$10 worth of Paragon Points, to have their arc looked at. First, a GM or low level Paragon employee spends five minutes looking over the arc, to make sure that;

    1) The author spent more than ten minutes on it; it works properly and is not riddled with spelling errors.
    2) It's not a farm.
    3) It's not horrible. ("Mynx's Furry R.ape Adventure")

Then, some player volunteers play through it, with the author's name removed to prevent favoritism. Arcs that tell a good story and/or pose a worthy challenge are given a "Paragon Stamp of Approval": they are listed separately from the bulk of arcs, and yield full XP and drops.

And, 3-4 times a year, the devs go through the top rated arcs and choose one or two that they really like. These become part of main CoH lore, like the SSA, and the author gets some sort of reward.

    Opinions?
I wouldnt have reduced xp for arcs vs normal missions. What I would have done was to allow selection of preconfigured "power groups" for your custom groups. For example, you could select the "Carnival Faction" power group for your custom mobs, and they would behave exactly as carnies would in normal content. You only get to customize the appearance of the mobs and perhaps the color of the powers. This would have cut out 100% of the farming seen in AE. No more creation of all fire attack mobs for Fire Farms, for example.

Having done that, they could have then concentrated on providing EVERY feature that the devs have for creating arcs.

That pic from Isikol is just awesome, I wonder how much he charges for commissions? Dont see anything on his site.

    Scrappers

    Scrappers FTW!

This is the first and only MMORPG that got a melee DPS class just right. And I doubt we'll ever see the like again.

No offense to the brutes out there, but nothing beats a scrap for pure fun.
  14. Well, I went to my first Tanker Tuesday on Nov 20th and had a great time. We split into two teams - mine did an ITF. Thanks for hosting this.

Screen shot ( my character is the handsome guy in the middle ):

  15. 1. ED and GDN - were handled extremely poorly. These should never have gone in prior to the IO system being implemented. The gains in subscriptions for Going Rogue had to have been significantly offset by the loss in subscriptions due to these massive nerfs.

    2. Failure to provide an endgame system early on. The incarnate system is "Ok", but should have been implemented soon after Going Rogue. Failure to provide a reason to keep playing had to play a part in the hemmorage of players over time. And please ... dont give me "the game is about the journey to 50". The game, to me, is about the characters I like the most. And I want to continue playing, and improving said characters.

    3. Abandonment of sub-systems like Bases and AE. These could have been awesome systems with a little love, but like most things they were rushed out half done and then abandoned in favor of the next new shiny.

    4. No expansion of the world. The world is small, and there is a significant number of MMO players who want to explore. This game offers little attraction to that segment of players.

    5. No real improvement to the GUI. It still looks dated even with the marginal improvements they made. Character models look even more dated.
  16. The one thing I regret doing was giving up my ingame handle of Hercules.

I noted that when getting in arguments in some threads, that people were purposefully targetting my AE arcs with 1 stars in retaliation. I figured changing the handle would alleviate some of that.

However, after giving up making AE missions due to it being another abandoned sub-system by the Devs, I really wish I had it back. Of course, someone else had grabbed it in the interim.
  17. 1. Doing all of the TFs on one character.

    2. Doing a CoP.

    3. Finishing my solo SG base. I created a solo SG on one of my toons, just so I could experiment with base building. It's maybe 10% complete.... I never could spend long stretches working on it due to the clutzy interface and limited object portfolio.

    Edit:
    4. Continuing/Completing my AE series dealing with Croatoa. I gave up on doing anymore due to the Dev's decision to completely abandon the sub-system and some much needed enhancements needed in AE to implement some of my ideas. So many stories that will never see the light of day ... oh well.
  18. Grats JayBoh. Nice piece of art.

    Fansy Returns!

So, what exactly does "rise from the ashes" mean?

They start on developing COH2 and we get a new game in 3 to 4 years, or can they start up the current game on new servers?
  20. Oh wow... that is awesome! Much thanks to Fooray.
He caught the essence of the character perfectly.
  21. Hercules

    coXso yet again.

Wow, I'd really like something like that for my plant/storm troller .... but guess I'll stay out since I've already won twice.
  22. Thanks Celtic Bolt, I really appreciate the picture you made. Good job!

    Nice picture Texas.

    Favorites

    1. Looking back, considering everything, which was your favorite archetype in the game?
Scrappers, hands down. The only DPS "class" in any MMORPG where you can Leroy Jenkins and get by with it.

    2. In possible contrast, when it comes to your favorite character, what kind was it? List AT and the two main sets.
Tanker INV/SS. He could wade into almost anything and not be touched.
A tank in any other game is just a big bag of hit points - nothing special.

    3. What AT did you evolve to enjoy over the years that you disliked initially?
Trollers. The first troller that I truely enjoyed was my Plant/Storm. Damage, Control, and pure chaos. Also made Fire/Kin, Fire/Rad, and Ice/NA. Each enjoyable in their own way , but nothing compares to the the plant/storm.

    Contest Art

I just received the following art as one of my two contest prizes. ( This one is of my first character, Hercules, an INV/SS Tanker ).

Thanks much to Christopher Robbin for holding the contests and to Celtic Bolt for making this piece. Pretty cool:

If anyone else wants to showcase their prizes, I guess we could use this thread.... be nice to show them all in one place.

BTW, is there any way to show the picture directly from DA instead of using a link?
