Well, that link worked on my phone. Trying again:

Quote:This guy claims to offer that very service. I have not patronized him or researched his reputation. So this is just information, not an endorsement. I've recently taken up the hobby and plan to make my own, so you are not alone in this!Anyone have links to a place online that can make a custom figure (or statue) of a CoH hero?

I was just going to log in and post this if no one else had. I don't know what they were expecting, but I think the devs deserve congratulations. I like seeing that uptick on the graph that has been on a downward slant for so long.

Turns out he was made entirely of SOPA.

Quote:I'm not hinting at anything. But the VIP/premium statuses appears to be designed for people to switch in and out of. I would not presume that people would not want to plan for future status changes and have names reserved on Exalted for future use. In fact, I would think a significant number of people are doing that. Your logic appears faulty, here. Are you actually hinting that you targeted posters deliberately based on their position on naming? Because I do remember you. Since you stated your plan to drop down to premium, there would be no point in making characters on Exalted as they would be inaccessible to a Premium player, if those characters were being made to actually be played.
Also, people sometimes simply change their mind. Witness the OP: one day he is quitting over the EULA, the next day, not so much. I think several people were wondering why the OP was complaining at all, since he had so prominently announced his intentions. -
Quote:This. The OP might try simply asking nicely. This thread is hysterical.
If you really want the name that bad, just email the person who has it and *kindly* ask them if they'd be willing to give it up/back. I don't think there's any real harm in that. Just be careful not to harrass them if they keep your name.
Although, considering how vociferous the OP has been in the past on the issue of unique naming in this game, the irony here is palpable.
No matter how creative you are or how many thesauruses you open, sometimes that one perfect name is simply taken. Probably by another Orson Scott Card fan. -
Do you accept influence?

I'm going freeloader.
I had stopped subscribing, so I'm not used to the incarnate stuff, and I won't miss it. At this point I reupped to get some credits towards buying stuff after Freedom, and get a head start on playing some again.
Basically, I can start playing the "old" game for free, and with 66+ months in the bank will likely have access to enough not to miss what isn't there, and I can buy content a la carte. For someone who was also happy not playing, it's a no-brainer.
I don't play enough to justify a subscription anymore, but I can still play: win for me. I will probably buy stuff a la carte, so they get some money from me rather than none: win for them. There's more population on the servers: win for you. -
Quote:This. Sweet Flying Spaghetti Monster, THIS.I was about to try to elaborate upon a reason for opening up names, then I read the above statement in a post.
The fact that this person thinks these were choice names for an "Iconic Super Hero" character made me realize that anything I could say would be a waste of my time.
Ask yourself this simple question when creating a new character: If I were in a comic shop and saw a new comic titled (insert your character name here) would it perk your interest to buy it?
I can say for certain that "The Amazing Deep Friar" would not get my hard earned pennies and implying that a new player should be happy to be able to score such a choice name is preposterously funny.
As for presenting solid evidence that folks seem to be saying doesn't exist, as I stated in my previous post, I already play CO and none of the problems they claim will happen, actually happen. I have two names there which would be considered "common" type names, the rest are obscure. Of those two, I've run into a grand total of ONE other person with one of those names that ran past me once in the year I've played there.
And do you know that the amount of names using the insert numbers trick is obscenely low. I see perhaps one a month run past me with a name like that, unlike the many I see daily here in CoH.
I'm not bashing CoH, not by a long shot, and I like it overall best of the two super hero games that I both enjoy. I am only here saying that most of the problems that people are saying will happen. Don't.
Both sides of the argument actually get what they want, the one side can name their character exactly the name they had planned for, and the other side can run around and likely never encounter their "evil twin" thus preserving the "feeling" of their uniqueness during their play session.
And I only have one final point to make about all of this. One person's chance of seeing a name run past them once in a blue moon does not trump another person being forced to always see a name they are not completely happy with every time they log onto a character that couldn't be named to their liking.
In other words, I have to look at my character every time I log on and the entire time I'm playing. You on the other hand, will almost certainly never run into me while playing, and if you happen to do so, I will be gone seconds later as I run past you.
PS. If simply KNOWING that another person exists on a server with a similar name troubles you, then that is an altogether different problem, one that should be handled by trained professionals and not the peanut gallery that is this forum. That is not meant as an insult, but rather just good advice that I would give to any relative and close personal friend.

Quote:I second this. The Hero Con data cannot be relied upon for exactly the reason you stated.Thank goodness! Here I was worried you'd dismiss my points along with the points of those who were dismissive.
Or, if not you, at least others.
Though I'd also like to point out that, when the devs asked, they asked a TINY group representing the population of the game, which isn't an appropriate sampling at all. Even the forum population is hardly an adequate sample-size for such a poll.
I'd like to propose, however, a different solution to the issue. A massive e-mail to all currently active accounts for a vote. It would, quite decisively, clear any question the Devs might have up nigh-instantaneously.
-Rachel-
I'd open up to poll to everyone on the mailing list, including former players. Tons of MMO players have passed through COH, and occasionally return. The interest here is not only attracting new players, but retaining and also pulling people back. -
Quote:Being subject to a restrictive naming which eliminates names from your acces entirely does NOT make you lazy or unimaginative. It makes you subject to game restrictions.Sorry, but implying new players are lazy and unimaginative is not a valid reason.
YOU are the one implying that if your sense character concept is so strong that you'd rather rather not compromise and take an alternate after consulting a thesaurus or resorting to foreign languages somehow makes you less of a person.
New player access is an excellent reason to open up the naming.
At this point in the game's life, however, I'd rather the resources go into correcting the issue in CoH2. The old timer "I got mine back when and everyone else can buy a thesaurus"-types can stay in CoH1! -
Quote:Yes. There are several examples of multiple active comic book characters carrying the same mantle. Even more examples of "heirs to the mantle." Even examples of same-named characters from different publishers.Your avatar reminds me: weren't Jay Garrick and Wally West both active as The Flash at the same time and on the same world for several years, just on different teams? I never read JSA, but I know Power Girl was in it, and Power Girl was hanging out with some JLAers in some comics that I was reading from the early 2000s (pre-Infinite Crisis).
I'd might even go so far to say it is a comic book tradition.
DC is the primary "culprit," with many of their examples being from alternate earths.
Hmmmm - an alternate earth. Why does that phrase seem so familiar? -
Quote:Thanks for this post.I've been here with CoH since it came out years ago.
And I too sometimes have a hard time finding a name that I like and can live with for whatever new character I make.
I also play Champions. I like both games, and intend to continue to do so.
When I first tried Champions, I was leery about how the naming system would work because I am into immersive play.
It reminds me of when I first switched to a wide screen monitor, I was hesitant and thought I would not like it for some reason. Today, you would have to pry it from my dead hands, I will never go back.
I feel the same about the naming system. Being able to create a character and KNOW that I will be able to name it the exact name that I intended for him or her is priceless to me. I do not want to have to do "research" for hours on the web just to name a character.
So yeah, I am going to throw my hat in with the "I want the name I want" crowd.
And for whatever it's worth, I almost never see duplicate names over in Champions. It is such a rare sight. Plus, what I almost never see are names using numbers or any of the other naming tricks mentioned throughout this thread. Which really helps me keep my immersion going.

I dream of the day CoX adopts this. -

Restored Baumton
Although cross server teamage would be awesome-sauce, my money is on a Boomtown makeover.
But I still think and hope it is a Boomtown revamp with Apex Task Force. -
Quote:The Apex contact should be animated in a yelling motion, shouting out "Looking for team!" (like the newsies do, with word ballooons) - as a continuation of the end of the comic. What would be awesome there is if Apex joins you on a lot of missions, given that he'd be about as strong as you.
That'd be pure awesome - and if he was actually an ally in some of the missions, as you said. -
Here's hoping for a Boomtown revamp with an Apex Task Force! (And perhaps a revamp of the level range for Boomtown.)
-
Perhaps you misunderstood. It would take about 40 days to get 20 of the new merits for a PvP IO recipe - perhaps that's what he was talking about - but that had nothing to do with the drop rate. It would also take 200 missions (5 per day), not 90.

I'm in the minority with Noble Savage - a long i sound.
But I took Latin, and my instructor emphasized classical pronunciation.

Quote:Utterly and completely WRONG.YOU WERE NEVER PROMISED. No one was promised. Please let that sink in before more complaining commences. All they've ever said, for any method of qualifying for beta, was that you'd be ELIGIBLE for beta testing. Closed Beta never invites everyone and their dog. That's what Open Beta is for. It's been like this for every Closed Beta they've ever ran, and ever will run. You did the things they asked for, and got put on a list. That's all they said they'd do. There's been no redname post, no community rep post, no anything, that says you're guaranteed to get in by doing X, Y, or Z.
Ahh....I feel better now.
The loyalty program said you would get access by completing the loyalty program. No hedgewords like eligibility were used. You do x, you get closed beta access.
Look here to see the words for yourself.
Closed beta access was sold, plain and simple, to everyone, their dogs, and even their cats who had enough money. -
Quote:If these are true statements (and more importantly, if NCSoft believes these are true statements) then access to closed beta testing should never be SOLD. Linking access to loyalty programs or to pre-purchases is exactly that - selling closed beta access....
Everyone is freaking out about getting into to CB, and that is only because they want to see the new stuff, not actually test. If all you want to do is see the new shinies, then you can wait till launch. CB is for TESTING and BREAKING the stuff, not looking at it so you can say you seen it before it went live.
The way I see it, unless youre a player with a great track record for tracking down bugs and stuff, you don't need to be in CB. If you just want to play with the new shinies, why play with all the new stuff and spoil the "new" factor before the content even goes live?
You might have a nice argument on the level of a purist, but NCSoft clearly doesn't believe it, and the customers who took them up on the offer certainly don't believe it.
We have to wait and see how things play out, of course, but things are setting up to play out badly IMO. -
Setting Test up for play at Comic Con, I'd imagine.

Quote:Alas, I have no screen, but the puffy pirate shirt from CoV beta REALLY needs to come back!Hey, folks. I'd like to explore the idea of bringing back old costume parts that, for whatever reason, have fallen out of the system. So I'm turning to you, our esteemed veterans, for some historical knowledge and, ideally, names plus screenshots. I've seen a few examples posted on other threads, but let's consolidate that information here if possible.
Thanks for your help, and with a little luck, perhaps we can get some of these items back for you.
I think it was removed for clipping issues, but who cares?!? It's a puffy pirate shirt!
