Is this the 1950s or 2010s?

This was partly triggered by the discussion on Skyfall with Arcanaville.

    You guys know this scenario?

Villain: "Surrender, Hero, or I'll kill this defenseless civillian I've captured!"
Hero: "Very well, I give up, but don't harm him/her!"

I always thought that scenario was bad. Because if I had super-powers, I'm pretty sure I'd do a LOT more good alive than dead, even at the expense of one hostage. I'd feel bad for the bad hostage, but hey, I just avenged them AND stopped the bad guy from hurting even more people! Superheroes just don't seem to think about the big picture enough. And that got me started thinking about the greatest hero of all.....

[INSERT NAME HERE], The Fiscally Responsible Hero!

Our hero has a massive spreadsheet at home that he uses to calculate just how economical each act of heroism is, so he can figure out the Return on Investment.
    • Someone just stole a purse from grandma.....but it's 2 miles down the road. How much gas and time would it take to retrieve the purse, especially when there's a car crash a mile in the other direction?
    • Villain wants you to give yourself up in exchange for hostages? Well let's do the math and figure out the potential future earnings of all of the hostages and compare that to the money that's saved by the Hero stopping disasters.
    • Are the Skulls rioting in Steel Canyon? Well what if the Hero has a job interview with the Freedom Phalanx instead at the exact same time? He might be able to save more lives if he gets in.

In every situation, our Hero pops out his handy-dandy Smartphone and runs through the numbers so that he can be heroic AND fiscally responsible. This guy isn't about getting endorsement or self-promotion, he just wants to save the most number of people with finite resources. And he never leaves home without finishing at least one financial forecast.

But what would we call him?

And what would he look like?

Help me COH Players, you're my only hope....

    I'm looking for:
    Name:
    Power Set/AT:
If any of you are up for it, I'd also love to see
    Screenshot of the Costume:

You have until 5:00PM PST on Thursday, November 29th. Winner gets.....something. Probably a smile from me.

PS: I really did want to see him in the game one day. Though I imagine it would have involved going over many dead bodies.

Only you Pebble only you. Would think a hero would go around calculating peoples net worth on the spot and weather it's worth it to save them or not, I love it.

    my favourite part

    Scrappers

I prefer scrappers over brutes myself but some sets coughstonemeleecough scrappers never got their hands on so my hand was forced.

There defiantly is and some games are already doing it.

For the record people throwing around the term twitch gaming just cause I suggest actually aiming in an mmo/rpg does not even know what the term really means. Twitch gaming comes from FPS where one wrong twitch/turn and you gonna get a head shot and be killed, you know at a bullet you can't even see coming it moves so fast.

But in the RPG section of actually aiming think Zelda. You get to aim your boomerang which zooms to FPS mode but you can't move. Also there is a lock on button for enemys but you still have to physically make contact with your sword to do any damage. Zelda is by no means a twitch game like Call of Duty or other FPS but it's also not lame dice rolls.

I'll stick with hitting one key to target the enemy I want to target, rather than swinging wildly and hoping that something is actually there to get hit, thanks.
No offense but are you good sir blind? Why would you swing wildly? You know the length of your weapon, can you not see when an enemy comes into range of said weapon? That is the time you should swing.

What's frustrating is letting some electronic dice roll decide if your sword hits the enemy or not.

And ya it is skill what would you call it luck? No no no what we have here in COH is luck games where you have to actually aim your attacks that is the very definition of skill.

    So dice rolls=luck, actually aiming=skill
  15. Here's a hint stop playing RPGs. Lots of games out there that are not even close to WOW. Go buy a console or something.

and besides all the WOW knock offs are cheap free to play games anyway stop being cheap like the old saying goes "you get what you pay for."

I like the slightly slower pace of CoH combat, which still is sometimes too fast for me.
You have to actually aim your attacks fps style but in third person view, if you swing your sword and nothings there you don't hit anything.

I always disliked tab targeting myself but for certain RPGs I will tolerate it.
  17. I always thought the zones were to small for how fast we could move. I wish each zone was the size of all the Shadow Shard zones put together.

No duels in open areas like Pocket D or under the Atlas statue and the i13 in general. That would have been great fun to both watch and participate in and I think would have done some good for making pvp more popular in this game.

AE was not upgraded enough it could have been so much more. It was the single most anticipated issue for me. I loved the **** and me and my one friend had a blast playing and yes even exploiting it to see where exactly we could push the limits. But alas it was nerfed so much and not enough new features made its way. Like AE player created PVP scenarios would have been a dream come true for me.

The big things for me anyway things that could have been awesome and I defiantly enjoyed a great deal but community s that were in the long run ignored AE and PVP. That's where the game went wrong IMO.

    Last Dance

You may not now who I am maybe you do but I always loved reading your posts Arcanaville.
I always pictured you working at NASA like being a part of the Voyager 1&2 working along side Carl Sagen or something similar.

Adiós Arcana you have my utmost respect.
  19. I wish I never let my second account go dead it actually had the forum name Lucky it was amazing I got it right after they merged NA and EU forums. But I fell on hard times and two MMO accounts just wasn't in the budget. It also had some of my favorite characters like my ill/rad but my ill/dark I made on this account more then made up for it(THANK YOU DEVS for porting dark to trollers it was the best thing I ever wanted for them!)

Also Black Pebble I said some real nasty things about and would just like to apologize it was completely in bad taste and I now understand things clearer, Sorry.

Did people really think CoH was going to be around 20 years? I consider 8 years to be quite an achievement personally; especially when compared to the life of some other MMOs. I HIGHLY doubt either CO or DCUO will see as much life; I fear their time is coming much sooner than people want to think/admit.
Millions of people maybe for WOW and a few select others but that's average on best with games like the EA sports series who manage to milk their consumer base yearly with the various sports games they release. Difference I can still play my NHL 06 on my ps2 that still works so no hard feeling at EA for shutting the server off and oh ya I can buy their new one to continue playing online.

People might buy MMOs, but how WOW is to the rest of the crowd of the MMO market you know the giant 900LB gorilla in the room in aint got nothing on say Mario or Zelda or EA sports or Metroid or or or the list goes on. Console games are a million times more popular then MMOs and the most popular PC games are ports from consoles. It's cause people don't like paying monthly to access a game they bought and then on top of that have that game be taken away when ever who is in charge decides to.

Who cares what's in it for them, how MMOs work is NOT how video games traditionally work even for PC games. It's a relatively new thing to not be able to play games offline as far as history of video games goes. How MMOs are run seems like a den of snakes are in charge most of the time doing shady business practices to get the best tax write off.

It really gives the video game industry a bad name and I hope to hell it changes soon but if not console gaming has hit the dream age for online play so I'm set.

Or only buy stuff to own from places that never ever killed a product in their entire history? If you can find one.

Never buy stuff that require updates to operate, see the console game?

Many choices out there but just about everyone here made a choice to put money into something that could end at anytime. Some of us knowingly, and seemingly some of us that didnt know. Was the process lack a bit on an indelicate touch? Probably, but so do some cases of death, since some like to compare to this end of game as their life ending too, I'll bite. Some people get ran over while others die peacefully in their sleep. Some peopel die before they are 18 while others die when they are 90. Some people never get to see the outside of the womb. Some people are brutally hacked to bits and placed in a shallow grave, while others get a million dollar funeral from loves ones.

Or maybe we are being the indelicate ones for wanting them to wait until they start losing money to shutdown, especially odd given how many people are upset at losing a few bucks on points.
It's not the few bucks on points that counts it's called Principle.
