All Things Art - FX Edition
Whats up yall, I am incredibly thrilled at the number and quality of ideas coming in. Keep em coming!
This week I want to answer a few questions and pass on some suggestions for you:
Ironik- There was a light bulb emote in the Steampunk pack! I think it was called inspired
Kheprera- Have you seen the stone block CCemote that is similar to the ice block?
Stonehead- Keldian CCemote bug is noted.
Kurrent- Scrubbing bubbles MM would be cool too! Pitch that over to the powers designers, Stat!
Sam Tow- "aura-only body parts" would be character costume stuff. A concept would have to get approved, then an artist would have to fill in the shoulder-hole if there was to be no arm, and then I could work some magic with it. Pitch it on the original All Things Art thread!
Kalistoh- We have to offset the eye auras away from the face so they wont clip into the foreheads/hair/hats etc. The character in all those images is looking down so they will appear to be in her cheeks and we generally design them to look best when the character is at in-game size. The Peacebringer one does indeed look off however, and I will look into it. Thanks!
FlashToo - Character animation is one more discipline on the list of stuff we dont do, but your suggestion for laying down and seated-pose emotes could have a place on another thread. And uh

outlook is promising.
Unfortunately, a generic aura for weapons is out of the question. Weve researched it, weapons have far too many shapes and sizes for us to make one work for all, and far too many weapons to allow time on our schedule for adding bones to them. However, we have recently come out with several weapons that have aura fx on them, and one that is made entirely of fx. We look forward to making more like these.

Ooops! I told FlashToo to post that here... I had seen the request for emote suggestions... but now I guess that was simply about effects-based emote ideas (like fireworks or whatever).
Der, my bad... I thought it was a little funny including character animation emotes, but now I realize I misunderstood!

Could this "sort of thing" be ... extended ... into being a Full Body Hologram "armor" using the body layer tech that Victorian Decor is made from? Basically making a "high tech" sort of Victorian Decor that holographically projects "body armor" around the entire body, when In Combat? |
ALSO, i would want this same aura [with multi body holograms] as a sort of "full body option" or "multi parts all over body option" for shield defense for meelee secondaries/tank primary. instead of just the fore arm based shields.

As far as auras go me and a few others put several suggestions in the suggestions forum section that I want to make sure gets attention. Mine specifically was here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...8&postcount=11
I wish they would at least separate the path auras and normal auras. Let us have both. That alone would open up a ton of possibilities. I guess it wouldn't be too far off from having each body part (legs, eyes, head, arms, etc) separate...just make the path a separate node. Next I would open up a different set of auras (normal and path) for each 'stance'. Different auras for non-combat, combat, flying combat, flying non-combat, etc. Would love to be able to use some of the subtler auras for the non-combat look but the flashier ones when fighting without elaborate binds and using up a couple costume slots. I could also see using separate auras for flying and not flying for some concepts. Not sure how much more load on the server this would be. There would only be the one set of auras going at a time, just a matter of switching based on the stances. But I don't know the code and SCR may apply but that's my wish list. Also, while probably not related to specially auras, but can we PLEASE just have the "incarnate" auras and costume pieces that aren't limited to lvl 50+ be available at character creation? Instead of an "account item" that is claimible per character just unlock the piece for the account |

i wanted to add an idea/suggestion to the flight/path/body aura suggestion:
*WHIRLWIND* aura: [which must be one of the few flight only ideas XD] should have the options: always whirlwinding, movement only[running and flying], flight only, and running only.

And then we get into ambition-bloat. It would be neat to have 'landing-only' as an option, so that seismic crack-in-the-ground only happens when we land after jumping. But that's a niche request. Flight-only would be super. Basically, it effectively would give us power customization for all flight powers, whether it's a temporary power or not!
If you can just give us different FX for hasten, I am pretty sure you would get the "MMO Developer of the Year" award. I am so serious.

Imagine a Rainbow Path Aura that only causes FX when Jumping ... producing nice parabolic arcs (like they should be) but which doesn't produce FX with other movement modes. Imagine an Autumn Path Aura that only causes FX when standing/running on the "ground" ... and so on.
I was just thinking, a few people want that sort of cracked earth/buckled ground look when they "land" from a super-jump. Wouldn't this be more for any jump over a certain height? Maybe it could be an option to turn on and off if its a graphically intense thing.
I know a couple of times I've had Invulnerable characters fall from a great height and I would have loved to see them land in a crouch and smash up the ground a bit

With the upcoming awesome FX for the Darkness Control powerset, could we get a costume change emote along the same vien?
I was thinking about some sort of shadow that either:
1) Creeps up from the ground, and envelopes you, in a circular fashion, blacking you out much like what the "Shadowy Pressence" does from the temp powers, spinning around you the whole time. Shades then disperse, with new costume on.
or
2)Shadows come in from different angles (perhaps like what the "Murder of Crows" CC emote does) covering you, and then follwing suit in a circular matter as what was described before.
It would really set off to complete the overall look and feel of many darkitty dark dark toons that are so ever present, and the millions more about to be made!

After reading Sam Tow's comment, I have to say that I still prefer Hot Feet to emanate from my feet while hovering/flying. So if there is a new animation made for hotfeet with fly/hover, please allow us to select between the two.

If you can find the time, I think it would be great if you could go back to the existing Auras, and make them work like Clunker, in that you have the Aura, Aura With Path, and Path-Only options.
You'd probably have to update a few Auras at a time, since there's already quite a few (although there are also some that can be skipped, like the Halos and Cyborg). My thought would be to run a query on the character DB, and see what Auras are used the most (say, top 5, or top 10 if time allows), and add the options to those.
This is also something to keep in mind going forward, making new Auras - adding built-in Paths where appropriate.
Also: Boots, Gloves, And Eyes (combat and non-combat) options for existing and new Auras!

I also almost never take Fly for my travel power. I prefer to mix Super Speed and Super Jumping.
That said, I would, in fact, like to see a Flight-Only option for Path Auras.

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:

I do feel a lot of these requests border on being requests for us being able to customize Flight and travel powers. Or more or less are them. Being able to replace the Flight wind effect with, say, the rocket thrusters or Superspeed's electric aura with something else. But I understand that's also a UI issue.

Similarly, there are a few auras that eject particles which always assume we're upright, such as Blazing Aura. Is it possible to give those an alternate effect when flying so that the fire ring still blasts out of the torso, and not out of somewhere below a flying character?
