  1. But thats sorta my point... best case scenario is a true rarity is the real world.
SOmeone has to pony up enough cash for 40 devs and the game, and then whats the time frame before initial incvestment is returned and said company starts to turn a profit?

Thats a huge gamble by any means.

I mean, hell, I HOPE it works, but the simple reality of it happening seems to be a bit much to fathom IMHO.

Which is why I am somewhat concerned for a possible City of... -lite version. Not sure it will do what sneeded with so much of an uphill climb already in its face...
  2. I'm a bit of an overthinker, admittedly. So, lets all pretend that from whatever outside source City of Heroes is actually bought out...

Realistically speaking... what can we expect it to look like?

It won't be a Studio of people still making 3 or 4 major updates every year, numerous costume options and awesome new storylines at any rate of frequency like we currently have...

    ... Will it?

I just can't see anyone being able to just flat buy out EVERYTHING we currently have in place. I mean, if it is just a "game is still on and playable as is" move... I am not willing to fork over $14 a month for that. Something, perhaps, but it can't possibly sustain a F2P mentality and still make money after such a big hit.

    ... Can it?

And the shear amount of people needed to maintain a game, its forums, its bugs, its maintence, its in game gold-spammers and exploits... Whatever is left might still LOOK like what we have, but there can't possibly be any way it will be the same game with the same EXPECTATIONS we had before for whats around the corner...

I think those expectations are also what made me want to play. Looking forward to something new, a new power set or costume set or storyline... if those are just simply gone, it might be a rather tough sell for anyone to justify keeping the doors open with a skeleton crew. (let alone paying to be here for an extended period of time)

I am by no means all knowing about any of this, but my logic seems sound. I have played since Oct after launch and been around for many many years and am truely saddened by whats going on... But I just can't let meyself get too excited about a possible future of this game I love if it is on a respirator and feeding tube in a state of stasis. Sure, it looks like Grandma, but Grandma doesnt do anything anymore...

Thats not really something I wish to revisit everyday and slowly watch it fall apart if good intentions fall short and we just have to go through all this again if the buy out doesn't meet up to what very high expectations (clouded with years of love and emotion to boot)

So, what will the State of the Game actually be?
Anyone care to correct me if I am wrong?
  3. Just a quick thanks to those who frequent this forum. I wasn't much of a poster here, but did read almost everything that made it up here. Hell, I would even judge a new SG based on thier base. If I hated it... I would never come back. I would go on stints for weeks where all I wanted to do was base build. Some people would wonder where I went off to, and it always came back to:

"Oh Bru is off playing legoes"

And lucky for me it helped out, because I took up a few high paying jobs and made a few billion influence off it. So it served 2 goals really... do what I liked to do and supply my in game toons with loads of cool stuff.

So thanks to anyone who let me look around thier base, gave me ideas, tips and tricks and came looking when I just finished something pretty sweet and just had to show it off to someone.

    It will definately be missed.
  4. Sorta bumping this, easy to see it get lost...

    Any chance of winners?
  5. NCsoft has also provided a statement to IGN regarding the shut down:

Both NCsoft and Paragon Studios are incredibly proud of the success of City of Heroes, but unfortunately, the continued support of the franchise no longer fits within our long term goals for the company. All employees at Paragon Studios are affected by this decision, including the management team.

We will begin the City of Heroes sun setting process immediately with the goal to officially stop our service offerings for the franchise on November 30, 2012.

This was a very tough decision to make and wish the best for all Paragon Studio employees in their next ventures.

More specific details on the shutdown process will be made available in the coming weeks. Other MMOs have gone out with a bang via massive server-spanning events. Hopefully City of Heroes will be given an equally epic send-off.

  6. Does this have anything to do with the Mayan Calander and the End of the World?

Do they know something we don't know?

Awww man, I think I need to go set some stuff straight...
  7. In light of recent events... I still would like to know how this event turned out and give kudos to those who put the time and effort into running it, participating in it, and ultimately, winning it.

    Any ETA on results?
    Thanks so very much

No more cool City of Legoes for me I guess.... LOL
  9. Weird, however, that I JUST checked in game and the Paragon Market is still functional, contrary to the post. I didn't choose to go all the way through checkout, but I was one click away...
  10. Just curious as I couldnt seem to find it in the original post... whats the turn around on the judging? As in the when will we know, will you post it here, dates, etc, etc, etc...

Just curious so I can be sure to check out the post and see how it all went down!

Thanks for putting it on, it was loads of fun!
  11. Global: @Bru’ Tal

Overall Theme: This go around I decided to just do an “as is” group make-over. My own challenge was to make them one cohesive unit, a true Super Group by City of Heroes standards. And in that frame of mind, they needed to have similar costumes (SG Uniform!), instead of a large group of individuals who may perhaps all have the same decoder ring or wrist communicator & show up at the same fight. So, they all have the same relatively base uniform: A deep dark blue with an off white accent. I am using the new Body Suit with Armor Pads where I can, and adjusting where things need to be different, specialized. The accents are what personalize them. Most accents will be gold and a deep red / crimson. The overall palette now has a sort of “red, white, and blue… with gold” look. Some in the group will keep their “flair” as to what defines them. They are now sleek and modern, cutting edge, and a bit “Ultimate.” Each person still holds their own individuality, but bends to the overall will and look of the group.

    Vindicator: Ms. Liberty

Why: I wanted Liberty to start us off and show us the look. A leader is confident, strong, and motivational. She walks out sleeveless with armor strapped to her arms and hands, a sleek boot and an individualized mid section and belt in red. Her hair shorter and mask the same, she steps into the forefront of the group, ready to lead into battle.

    Vindicator: Aurora Borealis

Why: Aurora livens up her look with fresh hair and steps in line with the SG uniform and remnants of her past look. The rings turned gold and are on her arms, forearms and ankles. A white bodice helps to individualize her also as a lean towards her old “all white” look. A dash of red in the belt for contrast and Aurora is ready to go to war.

    Vindicator: Luminary

Why: Putting clothes on a robot is a human thing. It’s not practical and serves no purpose. Already gold, Luminary has been upgraded her arms and belt giving off the red accent. Her torso is still a nice glowing metallic gold now infused with the SG blue. She is as capable as ever and enters the fight not as the weird golden robot, but as a visual part of the team.

    Vindicator: Valkyrie

Why: Valkyrie starts with the SG under layer and then adds mounds of armor in her trademark yellow (now gold.) Tech and metallic’s encase her as she prepares for battle. Heavy golds wrapped in brilliant crimson accent not only her own look, but reflect that of the group as well.

    Vindicator: Infernal

Why: Infernal joins the group much like Valkyrie has, base SG with additions galore. He switches up the color pallet, the prominent red a throw back to his previous costume. The use of the new Tech Knight set allows him to be unique but not so completely out there that he doesn’t fit within the SG uniform parameters. Finally, Infernal looks to be part of the bigger group, he now looks like he belongs.

    Vindicator: Mynx

Why: Mynx breaks out of the “worst costume ever made” category and gladly joins the rest of the team. The CoT under shirt is a nod to her former tiger stripes, and the solid body gives her new life as a force, not just the “odd looking striped catgirl.” A good day at the salon reveals her inner mynx to match her outer Mynx. Ready to pounce on the next challenge, Mynx has finally found her spot at the table.

    Vindicator: Swan

Why: Swan presented a big issue within the SG paramaters. She is all white and loads of skin showing. Swan takes the most advantage of the SG look, but keeps it classy and in the same realm of the others. Her base outfit still works, she has now covered it with her white. Tall, long legged boots stretch her white from toe to mid thigh. Her feathered cape tones down the blue while keeping her naked shoulders covered. Showing more skin than the others, she also completes the look with matching long armed gloves in white, and a bodice to help bring her back to her elegance and grace (also noted in the fine lace across her chest.)

    Vindicator: Woodsman

Why: Obviously the hardest to put into this SG outfit was Woodsman. We’ll just look over the spectral part for now, this isn’t story time. He is full bodied again and ready to help the team. His base SG blue’s are layered with what needs to come from Woodsman, a deep rich connection to nature & to the earth. We do that with the robe and the organic accents. We allow him to be modern but not get lost in it. He still embodies his nature protecting self without completely giving up on looking like part of the team.
  12. Global: @Bru’ Tal

Overall Theme: The year is 2062… 50 years from now. A lot has happened since then. A need for a more aggressive approach has made itself abundantly clear. Time has treated some of the Vindicators well, and others have passed on their spot to the up and coming heroes of Paragon. The group is broke up into 2 sub-groups, the Constants and the New Blood. The Constants are those who can transcend the years and still fight the battle the way it needs to be done. The New Bloods are the tried and true heroes who are new to the group, fighting their way not only for respect from their battle hardened Constants, but to prove to those whose spot they took that they can live up to the their legacy.

    Vindicator: Ms. Liberty (Leader, Constant)

Why: Ms. Liberty has now become one with the Well. Her Incarnate powers have grown into something that would even make Statesman proud. Her brighter outlook on life changed when Statesman died. She became harder, edgier, and took the fight off the podium in Atlas and to the streets of Paragon. What’s left of Statesman’s cape now hangs on her back. Ripped and torn, blood stained and singed, his essence lives on through her. She leads with an iron fist and her look is that of a confident leader, one who is taking her rightful place in the forefront of the wars that rip through Paragon City.

    Vindicator: Infernal (Constant)

Why: Infernal has only grown stronger in his quest for demon binding. His armor now hosts much more powerful demons than before, setting off a constant blaze from his hands and head. He is the living embodiment of power. His armor was hand crafted by powerful mystics to allow him to continue his ritualistic art.

    Vindicator: Lumirany (Constant)

Why: Luminary has adopted a more sentient AI compared to years past. She has evolved into a robot who not only belongs in our world to keep it safe, but now lives a life outside of the Hero Business. Her dependency on Positron has been severed as she now goes to some of Paragon’s finest minds and technicians to upgrade. She is a composition of elegance and sophistication, as well as having the means to be an integral part of the Vindicators. When not in battle, she can occasionally be found as a DJ at Pocket D.

    Vindicator: Valkyrie (Constant)

Why: 50 years of integration has turned Valkyrie into the most formidable warrior champions of Primal Earth. Her connection to the nanites in her staff has given her new life. Her nanite technology is represented in her more confident, over the top look, almost daring anyone to fight her. That same tech has also slowed her aging process, making her seem as young as she was 50 years ago, but much more powerful and adept in the field than even she ever imagined. She is a force to be reckoned with.

    Vindicator: Lynx (New Blood)
    Mentor: Mynx

Why: After many years of service, Mynx has stepped down from the team. She settled down, had children of her own. And now, her youngest child, Tabitha, is her greatest treasure and her greatest regret. The scientific DNA splicing done on Mynx seemingly had no affect on any of her other children. However her youngest daughter showed signs at a very early age. Uncanny balance, highly acrobatic as a youngster, a wild side unseen in any of her siblings were all too familiar. Knowing all too well what road that can lead down, Mynx stepped up and personally trained her to become a 2nd generation hero. Lynx chose the name to not only honor her mother, but to start a new path for herself. And this little kitty likes to play with danger…

    Vindicator: Swan (New Blood)
    Mentor: Swan

Why: The original Swan had a brilliant and effective career. Knowing her time was to come to an end, she took on an apprentice. She found a very gifted and talented magician, Casey Blair, at a traveling show, one who was obviously putting more into her show than just sleight of hand. Gorgeous and sophisticated, smart and ready to be tested, Casey was eager to learn everything she could. With concentrated focus and years of endless training, a new Swan emerged, ready to walk in step with the Vindicators just as the last Swan did.

    Vindicator: Equinox (New Blood)
    Mentor: Aurora Borealis

Why: A hard life followed Aurora where ever she went. A selfless person who traded away much of her own life for another had not much time to live for herself. She always felt lost, out of place, a step behind. A counterpart and friend of hers at Paragon University, a philosopher named Lane Hodges, revealed to her his own psychic abilities. Her old friend had come a very long way on his own, but had much to learn. She had longed to pass on the vast amount of knowledge and power that goes with it to someone else. After 8 years of training, the last step had to be taken. Her body frail, her mind at ease, she left this world and Lane allowed himself to host her spirit for a year. His power now magnified, he became a psychic force unseen in decades. Aurora passed on, leaving a very powerful Equinox in her place. The name, a throwback in honor of the neighborhood he grew up in Galaxy City before its demise.

    Vindicator: Earthbourne (New Blood)
    Mentor: Woodsman

Why: Woodsman’s spirit still travels through Eden, but his attention was needed there and there alone. For decades he looked for someone to pass on the mantle of Woodsman, but none were right. He prayed to the spirits of Eden to allow him to stay there for eternity, helping to protect its lands and keep the balance in Paragon. Eden listened and produced… a man. Earthbourne was a gift from Eden to Paragon; a reward for Woodsman’s undying allegiance to it. Possessing the powers of Eden itself, Earthbourne spent 5 years under the tutelage of Woodsman. Learning not only to fight, to keep balance, to restore, but also that of what it means to be alive, to be human. This last bit is the hardest for him to accomplish, he still struggles with what he is and he fights to carve out a name for himself in Vindicators.
  13. How about under the different ARMS category, we get ones that are just SKIN. This would allow for a sleevless shirt, in every current armor/ pattern type, or one full arm exposed, while the other keeps the body armor/ pattern type.

    So Upper Arms: Muscular
    Full Arm: Muscular

--Obviuously it would keep the exact skim colors selected for the body as well.

Also, how about EYE MASKS in the Details 1 category!
Somthing with a bit of thickness, some could be fancy, or just solid, or different material types.
They could come in 2 options:

    Option 1: Eyes showing
Options 2: Eye openeing tint/ colorable. (This gives us an awesome white eye cover/ black mask look!)
  14. I sink the desk lamps (small ones: off) into a regular desk.
Line them up overlapping each other both horizantal and vertical, making your grid pattern.
Then Shift/ sink them down into the desk of your choice!
It gives a nice metallic gid in which to then position some open flame of your choice.

  16. With the upcoming awesome FX for the Darkness Control powerset, could we get a costume change emote along the same vien?

I was thinking about some sort of shadow that either:
    1) Creeps up from the ground, and envelopes you, in a circular fashion, blacking you out much like what the "Shadowy Pressence" does from the temp powers, spinning around you the whole time. Shades then disperse, with new costume on.

    or

2)Shadows come in from different angles (perhaps like what the "Murder of Crows" CC emote does) covering you, and then follwing suit in a circular matter as what was described before.

It would really set off to complete the overall look and feel of many darkitty dark dark toons that are so ever present, and the millions more about to be made!
    Thanks!

Anything good to add instead of just random benign comments?

I, for one, say that these pieces should NOT be availble for purchase any other way. Its part of the play of the packs. If another wicked Costume Set becomes availble through this method, I will yet again buy more packs to obtain them.

    Well done Devs.

And as someone else said, the sheer amount of Black Wold pets scurrying around Virtue is evidence enough that the majority are not affected by the cries of "preditory" (I think thats what it was just changed to now) It seems the masses are louder than just some voices here...
  18. Wow, what a mess this thread has become.

In all my years playing the game, the one key factor that seemed to preceed every aspect of this game was:

    Risk vs Reward.

So, for all of you who hate this, you are proving thier point.
The reward is SO GOOD (costume pieces seem to be the big point) that your desire to obtain those clearly and easily is clouding the very simple equation. The RISK part, take 5 cards, flip them and see what you get... To you, the mere chance of uncertainty seems overwhelming.

Sounds like the Risk vs Reward equation is working as intended.

I DO NOT think the costumes should be offered anywhere else but in packs. This allows the packs to have a special reward that you can get nowhere else. You take the risk of puchasing the packs, you have a chance of reaping the desirable rewards. It seems some of you are one sided here, you only want rewards.

I think the rewards justify the packs. Here is an outstanding costume set that is obtainable by only doing *this act*... One could have said that for the Roman pieces before they let them loose. How about the Rularru pieces? Why arent people up in arms that they cant buy those? Its costume stuff only obtainable by doing *this act*...

    Some say Time is Money.
So, is the hours sludging through the shards compriable to paying out a couple bucks to obtain the costume sets? For some, yes it is. Some people cant spend hours upon hours doing those TF's or Trias, but they can buy some cards, flip them, and feel connected to the game in ways they couldnt before.

Badges are attached to doing *this act*

So much of the game is, and now, people want thier cake and to eat it too.

    No way Jose'

thats the brilliance of the Super Packs. Heres the coolest thing ever. Buy the packs, you may get them, as well as some other cool stuff. If you dont buy them, no costumes. If you dont do the TF, no badge. If you dont sludge through the shards, no pieces...

    Its all the same agrument.
    Same formula, different application.

So why are we complaining again?

I very much enjoyed this... thanks much for doing something so very very large scaled / multi server awesomeness.

    That alone is most excellent
  20. It was a very interesting contest indeed.

And, like any costume contest, always comes down to the personal choices of those judging it. Not sour grapes, just an interesting twist on who won in each category and the relevence to the topic of said category. I've been having some very interesting conversations about that recently. Sure, some bases *LOOK* amazing, but in the context of thier category, a bunch of us were shocked to see them above others who stuck more to the "theme"

Call it what you will, sometimes it's best to just nod your head and keep walking.
    Thanks for putting it on.
  21. Just curious...
Whens the results come out officially?
I cant seem to find it said anywhere.

I see that judging goes till the 22nd, so winners are announced... say, the 23rd?
I am not rushing by any means, just curious is all.
Gonna be out for Turkey Day week (mostly), just seeing if I need to pop on and see who won!

Many thanks for having the competition!
    It was a blast!
  22. Adding to this...

For some reason I really want to add a mustache to the Think Tank.
You know, for secret identities and what not!
