The Player Event Resource Committee Presents:
The Great Makeover: The Vindicators

August 1st to 21st, 2012

There are many Hero and Villain Groups in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles, with new ones forming all the time using the latest fashion and equipment in their attire. One of the original groups, The Vindicators, has been in need of some new costumes for quite some time now and are seeking out designers! Your challenge: Makeover The Vindicators!

The Vindicators are a hero group led by Ms. Liberty. They can often be found with Longbow fighting Arachnos in the Rogue Isles. (Wiki Page)

Contestants will only use the in-game character creator to design a "makeover" for any number of The Vindicators listed above. Your goal is to create a set of costumes for the "New" Vindicators. All options in the character creator are fair game, meaning even Paragon Market and Badge earned pieces may be used in the design. Sticking to the lore is important to us, but contestants may even go as far as changing character genders and no matter what changes are made, we would like to know why they were made. Reasoning could be simple or complex, but we want to know what contestants were thinking in why they changed what they did other than the obligatory "It was ugly."
  • Two entries per global per Vindicator are allowed: @Person can submit two separate Ms. Libertys, but cannot submit a third Ms. Liberty etc..
  • Non-VIP may enter, but be aware there may be limitations to the amount of INF awarded, or any of the IO sets.
  • To be considered for the top prize pools, contestants must submit at least an entry for minimum of 4 of the 8 Vindicators.
  • Judging will be based on: Creativity, Overall Aesthetic, and the tie in to City of Heroes' Lore.

  • The top 20 entries will receive 100 million INF (Must have at least 4 individual Vindicators)
  • The top 4 entries will receive an additional 500 million INF (Must have at least 4 individual Vindicators)
  • The top entry for each of the 8 Vindicator will receive 125 million INF
  • All entries will be entered into a random IO Set Enhancement drawing which will include, but are not limited to: Numina ++, Miracle +, Steadfast 3%, and LoTG 7.5%.
  • Contestants can win in each prize pool, but cannot win twice in a given pool!

  • The submission period is August 1st to 21st, 2012.
  • Entries can be submitted in three ways: this thread, Private Message, or Email: perc.coh@gmail.com
    • Forum posted entries that are NOT posted in the submission thread will NOT be considered.
  • Each entry must include a global handle, the name of the Vindicator, 3 images or links to images displaying the makeover, and why (reasoning) the changes were made.
    • The 3 required images should show the Front, Side, and Back of the character.
    • Please do not submit more than 3 pictures or links per Vindicator.
  • The submission format can be seen below and there is an example in the next post.
  • If you are posting pictures, please try to keep the width near 300px. If you do not / cannot crop your images then simply post the link rather than have it displayed.

Code:
Global Handle: @Your Handle

Vindicator: [Insert Vindicator's Name]

Pic or Link 1
Pic or Link 2
Pic or Link 3

Why: [Insert Why]

Q- Can I change the gender of a character?
A- You may, but you will need to have a solid story based reason for doing so.

Q- Can I change the name of a character?
A- You may change a character's name, but please provide your reasoning for doing so and how that fits into current (or reasonably predicted) lore.

Q- I don't know how to post a screen shot, can I still enter?
A- You can enter by emailing your screen shots to perc.coh@gmail.com and we will host and post them for you. Please include your global and forum name in the email. You can also make use of free image hosts like: http://www.tinypic.com

Q- Do I need to take the screen shots of the character in the costume creator or can I take an action shot?
A- You may take your screen shots with any background you chose. Please make sure the picture clearly shows the character's new look. Also note, powers (customized or not) will not be judged.

Q- What about weapons?
A- You are welcome to show weapons in your screenshots if you feel it adds to your makeover look.

Q- How exactly do my entries count towards prizes?
A- You can submit up to 16 different costume entries per global (2 per Vindicator). All your entries will count towards the "best of" whichever Vindicator it is. Each set of Vindicators (at least 4) will count towards the top 20 and top 4 prizes. If you choose to create more than 4 costumes per set, your best 4 will be counted and you will get a small bonus for the additional creations.

If you have any questions regarding this event, please feel free to contact Madame Pistacio, Ice Knight or Arkyaeon via private message or send an email to PERC.COH@gmail.com

Please do not quote other peoples entries while leaving the images of the original post in the quote.
Good luck and have fun!

so as a single entry we submit any number of vindicators with up to 2 new looks per vindicator?

You rate all of the ones we submit as a single entry and go by that?

Are you going by best costumes, average, or what?

in other words if I make 2 great costumes and 6 okay ones, should I just submit the 2 great ones? Will submitting bad ones hurt my entry?

To qualify for an overall prize you need to submit at least 4 individual Vindicators as a "set". It is up to you if they match or have any kind of theme between them. Each Vindicator will be judged individually but the score for the set will be used to qualify for the first two prizes.

Quote:
You rate all of the ones we submit as a single entry and go by that?
Please separate your "sets" into multiple posts. As an example, if I designed two sets of costumes for the Vindicators, I would make two posts: Vindicators by MP #1 the Nature Edition (includes Infernal, Mynx, Ms. Liberty, and Aurora) and then Vindicators by MP #2 the Futuristic Edition (includes Infernal 2, Mynx 2, Ms. Liberty 2, and Woodsman).

Quote:
Are you going by best costumes, average, or what?
Scoring will be done by a rubric of overall aesthetic (costume piece use, color use, etc), tie into City of Heroes lore, and creativity. There will be a score for each character you design and a score for your "set. "

Quote:
in other words if I make 2 great costumes and 6 okay ones, should I just submit the 2 great ones? Will submitting bad ones hurt my entry?
In your specific example you would have a good chance at winning an individual prize (example- Best Infernal or Best Mynx) but you would have a lesser chance of winning one of the first two prizes (for 4 or more Vindicators). Submitting a "bad" one would not hurt the scores for the others. If someone chooses to submit all 7 Vindicators (when only 4 are required) the best scores of the 7 will be taken, with a small bonus for designing the extras.

Please let me know if I have sufficiently answered your questions

Ms. Liberty is actually the leader of the Vindicators. Although in the past she has helped the FP (mostly because of Statesman being her grandfather). Please see http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Ms._Liberty for additional information.

Global handle: @CAPSLOCK
Vindicators: Infernal, Luminary, Valkyrie, & Woodsman

Infernal:
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/5527/infernall.jpg

What I was trying to do here is lighten up his color palette, give him a more "heroic" appearance, and modernize him somewhat, while keeping a somewhat "medieval-nouveau" aesthetic (if that's a thing...). I decided to switch him over to Titan Weapons because the Demon Axe seemed to fit with the idea of a Faustian hero who binds demons and forces them to aid him in heroic deeds. He came across the axe when he was assaulting a group of Banished Pantheon who were attempting to use the magic in the axe to call one of their fallen deities into our world. He could feel the great power in the axe, and decided to use it.

The color scheme I used was mostly red and orange, to evoke the though of flames.

Luminary:
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9180/luminary.jpg

The one member of the Vindicators that I have long believed to be the ugliest. I tried to take the general look and make it match up more with how actual people in the game look, changing her from an uncanny valley machine into a real android (although, technically, since she's supposed to look female, she'd be a gynoid, but that has some...odd connotations to some people). In a pitch battle with Rikti Restructurists, a group of War Riders had managed to get Luminary alone. She fought bravely and managed to destroy them, but she was badly damaged, and her body was beyond repair. Her disembodied processors collaborated with Citadel to design a superior model, and Luminary decided to clean up a little. After all, it's not every day that you can completely rebuild yourself.

Valkyrie:
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/8582/valkyriel.jpg

Valkyrie had always been one of my favorite Vindicators, largely because her aesthetic was very simple. I tried to capture her look while updating it, mostly using Justice parts. I switched her to Staff Fighting so she could finally use that spear on her back, but I used the trident model because there was no single-pointed spear model (consernit, Paragon!). There was little I really felt I had to change, except for using the newer parts and their better textures.

Woodsman:
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/3896/woodsmans.jpg

One of the most unnoticed Vindicators, largely because he is dead. I thought I'd take him a little down the road that Paragon took Huntsman, but still have him look a bit more civilized to reflect his desire to protect humanity and nature. He still looks more feral, and perhaps less human than before, but he's still the same Woodsman. He found his new form in a ritual being performed by the Circle of Thorns to create a demon-human hybrid, with the powers of a demon but immune to the normal ways one would destroy them. Woodsman wanted to warn the other Vindicators, but there was no time, so he took possession of the body they had created before the Thorns could give it a demonic consciousness. The body bonded with him, amplifying his powers and allowing him to live...and to destroy the group of Thorns surrounding him. He returned to the surface a new man, patrolling Eden and all the natural places of Paragon to defend nature from those who would despoil it. But is his new body truly wihout will of its own?

Kirsten you have woodsman's pic in the infernal spot

I haven't started on this, but am thinking of ways of altering them. Could be modern, based on history, or based on alternate universe

Better - Similar costume, just better. Seems to be Kirsten's approach

More literally thematic - swan more swan-like, valkyrie more valkyrie like, etc.

Steampunk - old fashioned techy

Colonial - old fashioned but with less tech. Miss Liberty as a bluecoat from the revolution, woodsman as Paul Bunyan, Valkyrie as a viking, that sort of thing

Golden Age - superhero outfits but with a golden age feel

(My Entries so far Ms. Liberty x2, Aurora x2, Infernal x2, Woodsman x2, Luminary x2, Valkyrie x2, Swan x2, Mynx x2)

Vindicator: Ms. Liberty (Now StatesWoman)

Why: (SPOILER ALERT!) after the death of StatesMan Ms. Liberty felt the best way to honor her grandfather was to take up his mantle thus StatesWoman was born

(note I hope melding all three pics in to one was okay if not let me know and will separate them.)

okay so I am just gonna add to this post as I submit my costumes if that is alright

Vindicator:Aurora Borealis

why: (again SPOILER ALERT!) After the fall death of Sister Psyche, Aurora Chose to honor her friend by dawning tribute attire so that she'd never be forgotten

Vindicator:Aurora Borealis

why: Aurora had helped train many young heroes and saw the changing fashions, though vanity should be a hero's last concern she still took a few moments of down time after the fall of Tyrant to visit icon and update her look.

Vindicator: Luminary

why: In logical duel effort to upgrade her abilities and fit in better with the human beings she interacts with each day Luminary downloaded her consciousness in to a new body complete with a dress facade.

Vindicator: Valkyrie

why: The War with the praetorian has taught Valerie Kellum one thing you can never be too armed, to that end she had a new suit of armor constructed one that utilizes the nanites in her body and the components of the spear to her strength through centrifugal force, she further utilized this effect though wielding a larger sword. ((effectively changing her from a Broadsword scrapper to a Titan weapons Brute)

Vindicator: Infernal

why:Having grabbed a bit of the power from the well of incarnates for him self, his body began to change no longer able to contain the demon energies inside him self his armor burst off and his body cracked open spewing forth demonic flame it was all infernal could do to keep the energies from over whelming him.

Vindicator: Woodsman

Why: being a spirit some times has it's limitations, Also being limited to the wilds wasn't allowing him to serve his team the best he can so he gathered stone, bone, plant and flesh once again giving him a physical form.

Vindicator: Woodsman (Now Nature's Legacy)

why: Woodsman has always been the embodiment of the link between man and nature, this was proven once again as he found a young lady wounded and dying in the forests of eden, to save her he merged his spirit with hers imbuing her with his power and thus natures power as well she becoming his Legacy

Vindicator:Swan

why: Swan had started to feel that her costume made her look too posh, like she wasn't able to get down and dirty, to this end she dawned a new sexier and more sleek costume more in like with her comrads

Vindicator: Ms. Liberty

why: With things in the streets of paragon getting tougher as well as her duties filling her grandfather's shoes Ms. Liberty felt it was time for a tougher look

Vindicator: Mynx

why: Simply put she decided to change what cat pattern she was wearing and along with it the colors she wore modeling her new gear after the snow leopard and changing from tights to Leather she hoped to go from cute to sexy.

Vindicator: Mynx (now Black Lioness)

why: Katherine felt as if she wasn't taken seriously enough as a hero. so to that end she remade her image over dawning a helmet and new gear Black Lioness was born.

Vindicator: Luminary

Why: After many battles luminary had began to analyze weaknesses in her previous form and clearly being completely organic would have been difficult if not impossible, and that form too would have had weaknesses. Thus Luminary Began to work with Positron and Long bow on Biological Cybernetic hybrid, with a Titanium Skeleton and a skin made from a mix of liquid metals, synthetic flesh and living tissue she would now function with the flexibility of her human counterparts, the strength her previous for provided, and the enhanced ability to self repair by generating new "skin".

Vindicator: Valkyrie

why: Gaining further control over her nanites Valkyrie no longer felt the need for battle suit and opted for lighter armor which she infused with her nanites even flooding her Tattoos and sword etchings with them. Her new look purposely adopted for a more fearsome visage closer in line with her name sake.

Vindicator: Infernal

Why: as his Demon binding abilities grew his connection with the demon realms delved deeper and deeper soon reaching in to the lower circles spiting open his body with searing brimstone and hell fire and eventually allowing him access to the frozen depths in the bottom most pits of the underworld.

Vindicator: Swan

why: Even though swan has been blessed since birth with good fortune and has displayed phenomenal psychic abilities, she was eager to jump at the chance to gain more power to aid in her search for her parents. So, when I the Carnival of light offered just that opportunity she took it. Learning there ways she gained new found power and also dawned attire fitting her new power.

Vindicators: Aurora Borealis, Infernal, Luminary, Ms. Liberty, (x2) Mynx, Swan, Valkyrie

Vindicator: Aurora Borealis

Why: The vindicators have two 'all white' costumes. As Aurora and Swan already overlap in abilities in many ways, changing Aurora's look would help her stand out more. But more importantly, her name gives the idea of vivid and varied colors...and what does she wear? Plain white. The above costume blends many tones in faithfulness to her name. I actually like the base of her costume, and do like the ring motif she uses. I tried to continue this as best as possible, keeping the sleek spandex look that works quite well. This alongside the shift towards varied the color tones. I also added the cape/cloak to emphasize the colorful/ethereal feel of the auroa borealis.

Vindicator: Infernal

Why: Infernal's costume gives less of the feel of an extradimensional demon-binder from another world, and more the feel of a very large knight. My idea was to make infernal's fiery and arcane origins be more visible, while keeping his armored/medieval aesthetic. I did, however, want to make his armor more like that of a comic hero, and which led me to a pseudo-pulp warrior look. The face and chest reveal the fiery, inhuman flesh, something I imagined him having as a result of his dealings and mastery over hellfire beings, while his arms, legs and head bear heavy plated armor for battle.

Vindicator: Luminary

Why: I had a bit of trouble here, as I really do like the base costume, in its sleekness and simplicity. Yes the face and lack of accents to offset that simplicity do keep the costume from being memorable. In keeping with the original design, I wanted something smoother than the standard 'robotic' pieces. To me that always seemed to look more advanced. I also wanted to make the energy part of her more apparent, hence the power-core like back and chest detail. The face has been revised to look more abstract, showing the odd duality of her highly advanced robotic shell with strangely humanoid personality.

Vindicator: Ms. Liberty

Why: Though I do not actually mind her costume, and find it a good heroine uniform, Ms. Liberty is one of the characters that seems to have grown/advanced the most in the game. From sidekick to head of not just a super team, but the founder and leader of longbow, and now standing in the place of her grandfather, I thought she needed a uniform that showed a bit more of authority and maturity, while reflecting her different influences. Daughter of incarnate blood, patriot of paragon, commander of longbow, and figurehead of the vindicators. I wanted something that reflected the regality, heroism, and patriotism of her family while hinting toward the more vigilante/paramilitary-like notions she is capable of at times. This costume leans more heavily towards the longbow connection.

Vindicator: Ms. Liberty

Why: Same reasons as above, giving a costume that looks the part of the new roles Liberty has taken on. This costume leans more heavily toward the incarnate connection to her Grandfather, her Grecian armor referencing her links to Greek deities. (Zeus by her grandfather, Hera by her girdle) The colors are more patriotic, again referencing Statesman's more nationalistic apparel. The costume eschews a skirt for armor, as it assumes that as she steps up into greater roles she will face danger far more often.

Vindicator: Mynx

Why: I enjoy understated/simple costumes many times, but mynx had something less costume-like and more like stripes for fur. While this helped emphasize her cat nature, her facial features were very human. I skewed the balances a bit, giving her more of a hero's costume, but giving her a more feral face. The costume itself is supposed to be part heroic, part street, and part escaped experiment. (This in keeping with her rougher origin) I also wanted something that fit her petite but feral vibe.

Vindicator: Swan

Why: Swan missed the memo that heroes are supposed to wear their underoos ON TOP of their costumes, not instead of them. Added to this the fact that legacy white colors are transparent on flesh, and it just looks...not very superheroic. I wanted something that would make her look sultry but sophisticated. The mask is to match the dark markings around a white swans' eyes, and the wing-like cloak pays homage to the name as well. The 'club' hairstyle seemed a bit like plumage to me, again fitting for swan's namesake. I would actually have loved to keep her feathered shoulder piece, but c'est la vie. In combat mode I would have runes appear as a combat aura, reinforcing the mystical source of her abilities.

Vindicator: Valkyrie

Why: Valkyrie has always been interesting...her power source is pure tech, yet her aesthetic and the source of that tech lead to a more ancient/mythological bent. At the heart of it all seemed to me to be the whole 'super advanced tech becoming similar to magic' idea. The new costume is meant to continue that 'armored maiden warrior of old' vibe while still appearing as advanced technology. Basically high-tech ancient armor so advanced it seems mystical. In my take, she also uses a far more advanced blade. Her spear is not depicted in this revision, but would be included if I could. The 'old' look did not appear very advanced or mystical, so I gave it a new look using the more recent game additions.

You will note that you quouted one image.

I can remove the extra image if the judges insist, but wanted to show the front, side and back as well as an extra pose that does not always (if you look at the other small insets) work to show just those views.

I am just saying i brought something up about a similar issue involving aura in the multimedia thread about this and Miss P said 3 images only no fourth so i wouldn't be surprised and I only quoted on so as not to take up more space that people have to scroll through. i really only quoted the one so people would know whom i was speaking to

Fair enough. Again, I will abide by what the judges decide on this matter. So how about it, judges? Is a small vignette showing action/in-combat differences to the costume acceptable when added with the required front/side/back, or no?

Hi everyone! Just a few reminders

Please keep your pictures to 3 per character, it is perfectly okay to use an action shot as your front or side view, as it probably shows both(or one or the other at least). (Also, not that anyone has done this, but a reminder that if you have large pictures, you can post links instead.)

Please also refraining from quoting others' pictures as it makes the thread longer to load and could potentially be confusing.

Finally, we are happy to answer any questions or clarify any points, we'll do our very best to answer quickly.

Let's keep the thread and all posts positive and supportive The entries so far are awesome!
