2 billion per enhancer
er, I've participated in maybe a dozen Hami raids. We are talking dozens of 50s taking 1/2 hour to an hour to take this beast down. Solo it? is this even for real? Do i play a diff game than everyone else, with much lower drop rates/less treasure/tougher monsters?

Centurion, you realise you can transform a character for much less money right now?
The IO system offers a layered set of rewards.
Start off with Crushing Impacts or Thunderstrikes in all your attacks, this will cost the order of 20 million maybe? 50 million at most? Yellow sets.
Attacks you slot this way will be leaner and meaner than the SO equivalent, and you effectively get a few Super Reflex passive powers thrown in for free, either a rechrge boost or a Ranged defence boost along with some bonus accuracy. This difeerence is noticable in game.
Then progress to add sets like Positron's Blast, Mako's Bite, Touch of Death or Eradication. Orange sets. You'll pay maybe 20-50 million per power for these, and get better bonuses in your other powers and more set bonuses.
Then go onto the expensive stuff like Kinetic Combat, KB protection IOs, the Steadfast Unique, LotG recharge and you'll getting the big benefits like perma-ing some powers maybe or capping defence. You're talking 100 mill for some of these.
Finally there's the purple and PVP IOs. 2 billion for some.
If players could get this fourth tier of purple/PVP straight away, they'd be "Cool. Done that game. Whats next?". Easy come, easy go, off and play Champions or DCU instead.
As it is now, you do get rewarded for 3-6 months play if you go the IO route (yellow, maybe orange sets) and its a noticeable improvement, but there's still more to reach for.
THAT is what keeps people coming back to a game over a long time period. This is a subscription based game, so thats what benefits the devs, as well as the players. Its basic game design 101. Reward the player early, but keep offering new horizons to aspire to. Does that make sense?
Are you really saying if you could have the best build ever in 6 months you'd keep playing this game for years?
(I've been at this for over 4 years, and have purpled out exactly one character. Never slotted a PVP IO yet. Never did a LotG +Recharge till this last year. Now I've slotted maybe 10 of them across my characters? Did my first Miracle + Recovery's this week. I'm having fun.)
I play with a family friend, a fellow who is in his 70s and requires my help in levelling his characters and selecting powers. He loves playing the game, but even the power-selection and character design process can be daunting for him, and Single Origins with their varied names and types can be completely confounding at times.
He is NOT an average player. In fact, if any player were below average, this fellow would be it. He has generated over 5,000 reward merits since the system was implemented, leveled 20+ characters to 50 over the last 3 years, and is sitting on over 1 billion inf after donating most of it to SG memebers. I listen to players like you complain and just shake my head. This fellow SG member spent 2 years trying to figure out how to use Single Origins, and despite that he has generated enough wealth to fully Purple out several toons. |

Dude.
Just take your fingers out of your ears.
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

BID (are you still with me here?) LOW (Almost there) AND (So close) WAIT (phew, we made it).
I can guarantee you that the prices you've scouted out are 95% of the time the "OMG BUY IT NAOW!!!11!!one!" price. Place low-ball bids, 50-75% of the average from the last 5 sales. Heck, you don't even have to place the bids on a character you LIKE playing - transfer the necessary funds to an alt, and you'll get most of your recipes in a couple months.
While you wait on these bids; play the game! If you have a SG (or even if not) Save the salvage you get from drops that are needed for those recipes. Market the rest.
One of the forum members has (had?) a sig-quote that was one of the truthiest things about the market that I ever read. It said something like "If you didn't leave the bid up for at least a week, you didn't even try."
"My inner mind has become a reality-cracking overgod. He torments me! Help!"
"Obviously you did not read my posts, or you would recognize the inherent truth they convey."

I like how he calls it enhancer...... and other than that, we have ways of making influence in coh. Farming is boring in my opinion, yet i still have 6-7 pvp toons that have about 12 bil + a piece on them. All you need is a good group of people that you like to team with, then the merits and inf just roll in.
This thread makes me want to go purple out my warshade & then delete him.
Not that I agree with anything being said here but...IF the game is still balanced around SOs..
And assuming the current market system works..
Also making the idea of the in game economy work to some degree..
When I started playing back in issue..8 I think, on a trail account, I was lvling up a brute. I played flat out in order to try get to 50 asap. Now in that time, I teamed constantly BIG teams. And you know what I found? If I saved all the money I was earning from my missions and selling stuff, I could NOT afford to fully SO my toon in that next 5 level bracket.
Naturally this way before we had a market to make billions by lvl 17, and as a new player, I am certain I was doing this far from the optimum. But given that there was no way to slot myself with SOs from what I was earning...that seems that the game economy was wrong back then.
In other words..if it was wrong then, why MUST it be right now, as everyone but the OP is saying?

Now, we stop getting TOs really early, and by 50, we haven't seen a DO in ages. So we're getting more of the valuable enhancements. On top of that, we're also getting salvage and recipe drops, which generate a lot more money than SO drops, even if you're just vendoring them.
I can fully SO a level 50 character for 5 million if I remember correctly. I get 1 million for vendoring 10 common level 50 recipes.
Even at low levels, it's better. If I vendor one rare salvage, that's 5000 Inf. I can usually slot all the TOs or DOs that I need from that one sale alone.
Even if you completely ignore the market, characters have more money than they used to, simply because there's more stuff to sell to vendors.
And on top of that, 50's get twice as much Inf per kill as they used to.
@Roderick
I also remember that this game is balanced around SOs, and 1 IO drop can set you for life on all your characters if all you purchase is SOs..

I did not realize this game was called "City of Marketeers'. My bad, gonna need to find a heroes game somewhere.

You'd have better luck going door-to-door selling communion wafers to synagogues.
In this part of the forums - you've just crossed the line into (figurative) Host desecration. You're the Jehovah's Witness knocking on the door of an OTO Lodge... You're talking Martin Luther to a group that would much rather spend their time arguing Left-Hand Path over Right-Hand Path, so to speak.
City of Heroes didn't fail, City of Heroes was killed. If a 747 dropped on your house, you'd say you were killed, not you failed to find a safer dwelling.

If you think you can fully purple several toons on 1 billion, please sell me all your purps, I will pay top dollar.

When I first read this, I thought "how is one billion enough to do that?", but then I re-read it and realized you were talking about his total wealth generation, not about the amount of money he now has.

1 billion inf is roughly what he currently has, but he has generated far more over the last few years of his career, having donated most of it to SG mates. On top of that, I'm pretty sure that he could random roll 5,000+ reward merits into several billion inf. This is also a guy that traded a Synthetic Microfilament for an entire rack of Phenomenal Luck inspirations (100). He was ecstatic over this trade because he initially wanted a stack of 5 such inspirations, and didn't give a damn that the enhancement was going for 400+ million inf despite everyone telling him to toss it on the Black Market. He felt like a bandit in that trade, everyone else's opinion be damned. I have no idea how many HOs and SHOs he has deleted over the years because "they weren't Magic enhancers."
The fact that my 70 year old SG mate can team with IO laden min-maxers and still contribute to the group while making friends is what makes this game great. IOs are not required, just the right attitude, really.
That's pretty cool . You might want suggest he install Neo's Enhancement Standardization Pack. It makes it sooooo much easier to find the SOs you need.

As for the OP. Dude, lemme tell you a story.
I recently returned from a year of not playing, and I decided I'd start slotting these IO sets to replace the vanilla IOs that I had slotted. I fired up mids, I did a bunch of math, and I respecced in to my slots.
From there, I set out on a grand journey. Not a journey of farming, but a journey of playing the game. I decided I'd take my Nin/Nin Stalker (who is my only 50, and the character I usually play) And begin tackling any content I'd missed on his way to 50.
I used the ouroboros crystal, and my badge history to mentally keep track, and started to solo everything on +1/0. I WASTED time reading mission text, even doing SFs.
Whenever I got tips, I stopped my mission arc and did tips. I bought a few of my 1-merit pieces this way. Once I got up to the 2 merit peices, I started using my merits every other day to just roll for recipes.
I am not a marketeer. Whenever I fill up on non-white recipes (usually every other day, or every three days.) I visit the market, check the listings, and if its worth over a million to someone I toss it on the market. I use the money, combined with what I make playing the game to buy the salvage and recipes I don't have.
Did I mention that this character has been in SG mode since level 25 and never turns it off? Technically I'm making less money than I *could* be making, doing nothing but playing the game WITH ONE CHARACTER.
Exactly one month later, my Nin/Nin stalker is capable of soloing most of the AVs in the game, as well as rikti pylons. The only thing stopping him from taking on the things he can't is a hard limit of the Stalker AT, the low max hitpoint cap. There is no enhancing around that unfortunately.
I have zero purple IOs. I did all this visiting the market two or three times a week for ten minutes. I did all of this with the squishiest melee AT in the game, using the most resisted damage type in the game.
I play 2-4 hours a day, 4-5 days a week.
Purple IOs are nice, but I think you're seriously overestimating how much anyone at all NEEDS them for a build.
If you have the kind of build that NEEDS them, then you have the kind of build that is so ungodly uber, or severely poorly planned that it SHOULD be an "only in your wildest dreams" goal reserved for EXTREMELY long term play. It's not like you can't already get an absolutely obscene amount of power with very little effort. Most games would have taken a look at builds like MOST set-driven players have and nerfed everything back to the stone age.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish?
What more do you need?
Wow, so there's no way that I have 2 of each of the big pvp IOs on my main toon huh? Guess it must be a figment of my imagination. Welcome to the ignore list, say hi to Johnny for me.
The more people I meet, the more I'm beginning to root for the zombies.
I have no purples (and certainly no PVP IOs) slotted on any characters. Some of the builds are pretty involved, and quite powerful. I have no desire for handouts like you apparently do. Would I like to purple out my top alt? Sure. Doe I want to presented on a silver platter? No.
I guess I lack your entitlement mentality. Purples and PVP IOs in particular are very unnecessary. You can make builds easily capable of crushing the content without them.
Too many alts to list.
Now this thread that has it all can boast an "orthogonal" sighting.
I think I'm going to make that the word-of-the-day for my English classes tomorrow. |
Yeah. your questions have been answered by people here, by capitalist market theory, by the current popularity of the game... in short, you're just not reading the responses. Market is working aok, we might want the limit upped to 3-4B to fit the Glad Arm ResDef/etc, and thus destroy more inf... (dropped an advanced concept in there just to see if you're reading at all...)
