Quote:NCSoft has demonstrated they shut down MMOs more than any other MMO company. I will not trust them ever again with any MMO. It's not a boycott. It's just not being stupid enough to trust them again. My response to that is that nothing in life is guaranteed. Its like saying I was dumped by a significant other from a particular race/part of town/religion so I will never trust that subset of humanity with any sort of emotional attachment again. Its short sighted.
Do ex-star wars galaxies players swear off sony electronics? PS3? Major motion pictures? Holding a grudge against a multinational corporation by not playing a game is slactivism at best and the only one losing out is you if you were in the market for the product but wont buy it for some sense of duty to a few developers. If you think they were so amazingly talented(I'm not going to make a judgement on that one) then they will find work and keep being awesome without your boycott.
I will miss the best days of this game just like all of you guys but i'm not done playing videogames at this point in my life so i'm going to try out what comes out as long as I can afford the hobby and it interests me. Maybe at some point I'll start buying fair trade, organic, and non-ncsoft just to prove a point but for now i'm gonna go with the flow.
My invitation still stands by the way, press Y to open the friends menu and add the global I posted earlier. -
Quote:I won't touch an NCSoft product ever again so I really don't care how good it is at the moment. They may announce it is shutting down any day anyway.I've been falling pretty deeply for gw2 lately but then this week the halloween event started. Trick or treating, costumes which unlock pvp in non-pvp zones, crafting cool rare stuff from holiday loot, lore revealed in a new scavenger hunt event, the main city hub getting a hogwarts makeover, pumpkin carving, and more stuff I havent even tried yet. And this is the first act of four culminating on the 31st.
I hope you guys check this game out, it really is genuinely a great game(although much harder than CoX). If you do my global handle is Solo.9027 and I'm on Blackgate, but right now server transfers are free so it doesnt matter where you go.
I understand the anti-NCsoft sentiment around here but I felt like I had to relate how much fun this game is. I try to look at it as an Arenanet game more than an NCsoft game. If you buy it once there is no further money you'd need to give them to enjoy everything in the game so you can minimize any sort of guilt you might feel betraying paragon studios or whatever.
Also, I have not heard of any of the other recent games doing holiday events. Does TSW or CO(or any other game people are transferring to) have anything like this happen?
DCUO has a Halloween event which I despise because I compare it to City's Halloween event which I love.
Did I mention NCSoft can suck it? -
Quote:Clearly you don't understand the /jranger.Happens all the time by certain people, like "The Squirrel" does all the time already.
Yea, but posting that every single time can be viewed as annoying to the person it is directed at and not good for opening up constructive conversation, especially from a mod point of view.
Disagreeing with someone is not what it meant. Posting a contrary opinion is not what he did.
He just replied "no". If you think Forbin disagreeing with you is /jranger you are as wrong as wrong could be. -
Quote:It better show on my map or I'll never find the doorway. From the article it looks like DCUO's lairs will be mostly hardwired spaces, with just a few details that can be customized. On the upside it looks like they will have (as Captain-Electric mentioned) a feature I always dreamed CoH SG bases could have - the ability to "assign/attach" your lair's entrance to any door in the game world you want. That way your lair could physically be in a single spot of your choosing, just like a real place in the real world. It's also funny that they are going to allow 1v1 PVP in lairs. I guess since CoH could never figure out how to have full SG vs SG raids being able to fight 1v1 is better than nothing.
I must admit having lairs in DCUO does make me a tiny bit more interested in that game. Unfortunately I think there's still enough to dislike about it that'll still keep me from playing it. *shrugs*
There is an article out that mentions there will also be league bases. I read it a while ago (like 2 hours so yes my short term memory is horrible) and didn't care much so I don't recall the details.
Still, no matter how much they improve DCUO it will never replace City of Heroes for me. No game will that is currently out. -
Quote:Right now, I cannot see anywhere to go. I don't want to go anywhere else. I had "rolled the dice" and bought a lifetime to DCUO when it launched and while it does keep improving in many ways it is not any fun. Quickly to level cap 30 (about 20 hours for me) with no variety then grind, grind, grind is all there is to do. At least here I could grind the incarnate stuff till it bored me and then go play one of my pre-50s.I'm not playing any other MMOs. I didn't enjoy WoW, Aion, GW, RO, GE, or CO. I have no idea where I'm going to go now.
Mostly I don't know what to do with my modern-day themed characters, or Arachnos-inspired characters. I just can't take characters like these to some medieval fantasy setting game.
Where is everyone going? I'd like some ideas and some discussions on what games offer what.
I did like The Secret World when I tried the 3 day trial but that isn't superhero. Marvel's looks dead on arrival to me. I might try Champions but I doubt it will do.
So I go back to what I did before City of Heroes playing repetative games like Civilization or Roller Coaster Tycoon. -
Quote:It's not even exactly that for me. It's just the game is so unique in how it is played. I wouldn't like having to relevel up and reincarnate my favorites but at least I'd be able to play them again eventually. This is funny to me, This is exactly what i would do.
Only CoH could make me enjoy releveling, in any other game, Like WoW (Hate it) Or SWTOR (Very good, but only on the first playthrough for each faction) i would just quit.
As things are right now this shining jewel among games is going to get locked away in a vault never to be seen again. That is the real pity of this mess. -
Quote:Just the way scrappers like it.For you, dear Bill
A Scrapper is a whole lot like a chainsaw. Somewhat hard to handle, incredibly dangerous, and most fun when wielded by the slightly insane.
Running a scrapper is similar to fuelling up a lawn mower with nitro-methane, and then aiming it at the bad guys.
Every scrapper should have an army trying to kill him, it's the only way the scrapper might have a chance to die.
Scrappers do not view "Run!" as an imperative. They view it as a notification that they are now fighting alone.

Quote:One motivation such a person may have is that they are hurting but don't want to admit it and want to hurt anyone reminding them of their hurt thinking that will reduce their pain.I understand people wanting to move on. I understand not wanting to. I don't understand the lets-rub-salt-in-open-wounds mentality some people seem to have.
Another possibility is a sociopath who has no concept of the feelings of others.
And there is always the possibility of sadism where they enjoy inflicting pain. -
Quote:It made me chuckle to imagine every article about every NCSoft game in the future having the line "from NCSoft the company which used to publish and then cancelled X, Y, Z, A, B, C, etc."Quite so, and this includes covering the MMO industry in general.
This means that if they cover NCSoft and its games, they're not doing their job if they overlook the company's past behavior, which wasn't exactly that of a paragon of corporate rectitude. Anyone who now reports on Blade & Soul or Wild Star ought to note that they're coming from a publisher notorious for abruptly terminating promising games. Since MMOs require a medium- to long-term investment from their players, that's a pretty damning reputation. -
Quote:I don't understand this kind of thinking. Why would I waste my time playing something that is going to be gone in 60 days? When there was hope of it going on with another vendor I could play with the thinking that I might have to re-roll my characters after 11/30 but I'd still be able to play my game and eventually have my characters back. But why would I spend any time playing something which is going vapor on 12/1?This whole hippie thing is such a shame to me. I feel like these delusions are preventing so many people from playing the game and spending time with their characters while they still can...
Make the best out of the time you have left instead of clinging to an unrealistic future.
I mean you call those guys hippies but your attitude seems pretty hippie-like to me also. -
All I can say is as long as City of Heroes is dead, NCSoft is on my "do not buy anything from them" list no matter how great a product they are involved with looks.

Quote:Some people look and act "good" but you get a gut instinct that says something is not right. Don't ignore your gut. I am not saying just go with it but use it to keep on your toes. What makes you think that SD was talking about appearances? I've met literally tonnes of people who look completely normal, but as soon as they open their mouths, the creepy factor goes through the roof.
First impressions start when you first see the person, but they don't end there. The entire first meeting, up until the point where you part company counts as "first impressions". -
Quote:I had a similar problem but some Winter Lords arrived that winter and a level 25 fire blaster had an easy go on level 6(?) Winter Lords in Galaxy or Atlas to erase all that debt finally.I remember when my main had accrued so much debt he was effectively unplayable. I had to wait until they imposed debt caps before I could make any progress on him again.
Of course, rather than quitting outright, all that debt on Chad got me to start playing some other characters more regularly and to make new ones... and to fall in love with Controllers... <3 -

I checked out the 3 day trial this weekend and I will say it is one heck of a game but perhaps I am still in too much dismay over City's impending shutdown or hope for someone to get the IP so I can still play City to make the jump at this time.
-
I just hope NCSoft will release the IP (or sell it or however those things work) to someone and they will announce it soon. The only reason I would be totally down on NCSoft is if they just bury the IP and all this yummy goodness becomes the Ark of the Convenant in a warehouse somewhere*.
*(I would hope I wouldn't have to explain that I am referring to Raiders of the Lost Ark but just in case...) -
I had tried it in Beta and with City still alive and kicking it just didn't cut it for me. Any suggestions for enjoying it the most?
-
They have been changing the events each week so it probably is closed now for a different event to be active.

Quote:If I can play a tri-form warshade I'd be content.Having access to the reverse engineering crew, I'm almost certain that it will continue in some fashion. The only questions are details around how, and exactly how much functionality it will have. I'm still hopeful that we won't get to the point where this is our only option, though.
-
If I were neutral my gut would say "maybe".
But I am a hopeful pessimist. -
Quote:Well written and it does convey most of my feelings. I would just add that the sudden shutdown notice has also put a wedge between me and MMOs because I cannot invest my interest in something that could be taken away so easily. One of my kids played the Lego MMO and he is still upset from its shutdown last year so I doubt I will rebound from this any time soon. That's where I am. I have nothing against MMOs as a concept, but damned if they aren't all boring, monotonous slogs that try to ram socialisation down my throat and waste my time. And why are they almost all Fantasy? Seriously, this is like the dark age of FPS games where everything was either Doom or Quake which had no plot, characters or interesting locations outside of brown castle and grey castle.
To me, City of Heroes was the Half-Life of the MMO world - a game which used the basic RPG mechanics and MMO infrastructure to deliver a new, unique, eccentric experience more focused on impressing its players than just yanking money out of their pockets. And it really WAS ahead of its time. The MMO market then wasn't as saturated as it is now, so a "different" game wasn't valued as highly.
I have a lifetime sub in one of those other super MMOs so technically as long as their servers are on I can play it. But any time I do play it i just see how much better City of Heroes/Villains/etc is (soon was unless something happens). -
Thanks for the job you did here and best wishes on your next one.

Quote:For me the problem with DCUO is an utter lack of variety in powersets, too quickly to level cap and until recently then all there was to do was a weekly raid for rewards or PvP.CO is great if you want to feel like an errand boy for the big name signature heroes, and if you want an actual nemesis.
DCUO is great if you enjoy having your face firmly fastened to the loins of every franchise DC superhero ever. Nothing says "I'm a superhero" like being Superman's b****.
They have certainly made some improvements the past few months and someday it might be good enough (for me) but there are just things in City of Heroes that just don't exist anywhere else in any form.
So my hopes are:
1. City is acquired and we don't lose our characters/stuff.
or 2. City is acquired but we have to start over from scratch.
So while 1 would be perfect, I can live with option 2. But no City of Heroes game and having to settle for DCUO is justfor me
