Penny Arcade comic
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

That's pretty much the gist of what I got too, hence my first sentence. But that being said, I still think getting a PA comic about the situation, even a vaguely negative one, is a good thing. It would at least be worth a badge for the milestone.

Waiting for the news post for the comic, and hoping that it has a slightly more positive spin.
Agua Man lvl 48 Water/Electric Blaster
"To die hating NCSoft for shutting down City of Heroes, that was Freedom."
That's the point. It isn't all that clever, but it's some exposure.
Like Metal Giant said, Jerry Krahulik's news post generally expands on the comic within the first few paragraphs, so there is likely some more positive news coming. Exposure = Good!
And I believe the PA guys did play... Albeit long ago.
... Also not entirely positive, but... NEWS!
Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.
If you are referring the "meat in flat bread" thingy (also known as a donar kebab in the UK), then it is pronounced as "Heero" (parts of the US, some other parts of the world) if i remember correctly.
However, I first of all thought that it was referring to Gyro's (as in Gryoscopes) initially, and even now, after it was pointed out to me, i *still* think of Gyroscopes/mechanical parts instead of the meat foodstuff.
Yeah, some jokes just don't work world wide.. or even some parts of the US to other parts of the US.
And the joke that (almost) everyone missed is that "City of Gyros" is an in-game restaurant.
Wait for the blog post to see what they really have to say about the issue itself.

Depends on where you are from and what you are referring to actually.

It's like saying hamburgers are a kind of sandwich. That's completely true, but not all sandwiches are hamburgers.

Gyros are a specific kind of doner kebab. The Greek regional variant to be precise. Keep in mind "doner kebab" is a generic name for a number similar of foods. It just means 'turned meat cooked over flame'.

*shrugs*
Although you say it is a generic term, and I do not dispute that, I would go further and say that in the UK (where I live), if you say Kebab, 90% of people will think of Donar kebab (especially after a night of drinking/partying)

Though, I'm not saying the way it's being used in the UK isn't valid. Again, using the hamburger analogy, in the US everyone knows if you're going out for 'burgers and fries' it means hamburgers and fried potato.
Furthermore, 'gyro' and 'shawarma' are just variations on the word for 'turn', just like donar, donner, donair etc.

It's probably about the best we can expect, given that they're receiving Guild Wars 2 ad revenue.
You'd think their little Penny Arcade Report news thing would have had more by now, given that if Warren Spector farts and startles his cat they put up two interviews and an editorial.

I don't think they're dismissing it at all. No, they may not play anymore. But, Well, some people do. So, it matters. Even if it doesn't directly affect them, it matters.
Also, Gabe is consoled in that - if he wanted to - he could still get a gyro. There's comfort in just knowing that something is there. In a couple months, it's all too possible that they would not be able to play City of Heroes. Any comfort in knowing you could - even if you didn't necessarily want to - would be gone.
That's how I'd like to interpret it.
Suggestions:
Super Packs Done Right
Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level
I believe there's pretty good evidence that Tycho and Gabe like CoH, even if they don't play it all that much these days.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Not many people play City of Heroes so it being closed down isn't as big a deal as people are making it, as I read it. |
Oh ****ing come on. Seriously again?
They didn't have to mention City of Heroes at all. The only other times they bring up a game that older than three years that isn't 8bit is to make fun of Duke Nukem Forever.
As I said in the other thread:
Please don't ****ing attack them like you did Scott Kurtz. They're giving us exposure. I mean, the strip in question is basically an excuse to namedrop CoH and bring attention to its closing. |
I mean, FFS people. This and I'm considered a bad part of this community by most?

Many English speakers in the U.S. mispronounce it Jeye-roh or jeer-oh.
Take the Greek pronounciation and it rhymes with hero.
Seems like it's a stab at our efforts to save the game. The message I get from it is "Don't bother, it's not worth saving." I'm hoping the blogpost will shed more details on the comic.

As I said in the other thread: I'm pretty sure people on these forums made Scott regret even posting about the SaveCoH efforts after pulling his message apart (just like is being done now). And Kurtz actually liked the game and had a connection to it. I mean, FFS people. This and I'm considered a bad part of this community by most? |

Gabe is generally written as "the guy who is always wrong," so him dismissing it is intended to imply, "Don't do this."
Tycho even says, "well other people do."

If i recall, since i have read pa for a long time. Mike never played coh, or played it for a very short time, he is represented by the guy in the yellow shirt. Jerry, the guy in the blue shirt, liked this game a lot, I think he was a big fan of cov. Now they tend not to get into deeper stuff in their comics, so they probably did the dumb pun in he comic and i expect Jerry to go more in depth in his news thing.
Oh and gyros are really good. we tend to have local craft festivals here, and i hit them because the local greek orthodox churches tend to have big honking ones, look like portable salads, and they make the Tzatziki sauce by hand.

This seems to be completely negated by a comic they did just last week.
@Rylas
Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.
While people did nitpick Kurtz, he got his panties twisted up waaay too much over it and drama bombed when a lot of people were being pretty reasonable. And who takes a few trolls to comprise a whole community?
Still, exposure! Good stuff.
In a round about way I think this (unfortunately) sums up the opinion of a majority of the internet:

But the good news is, enough noise was made to get the attention of one of the heavyweights.
Newspost
Before I died so many times in rapid succession that my XP Debt functionally entombed my main, the time I spent in City of Heroes was characterized by wonder and amusement. It was Cosplay: The Videogame in a lot of ways - I’ve never seen people take their characters so seriously, and invest so much. Regular servers were the equivalent of any other game’s dedicated RP shard. The peoplewatching was unparalleled, and you were almost guaranteed a reward for looking at someone’s profile. I saw my backstory field as an opportunity to reward such Trick or Treating, and I did my best to treat liberally while keeping tricks to a minimum.
Not everybody played it, or understands “what the deal,” and since character creation is locked down they probably never will. It seemed like it couldn’t possibly be expensive to maintain it, but I’ve had it explained to me that it’s not about maintenance costs; it’s about turning that money, the people behind it, and the equipment sustaining it toward something new. That is no comfort, of course; people rarely think of their loved ones as fungible organic compounds. But, there you have it.
