Penny Arcade comic
Is there a forum on PVPOnline? Maybe I'm totally stupid, but I can't find one. Where did all this supposed drama with Scott Kurtz happen?

Not many people play City of Heroes so it being closed down isn't as big a deal as people are making it, as I read it.

It seems to me that it is about people's selfishness.
The guy was not only bent out of shape about what he liked being taken away, but he was claiming it was an injustice for society... but then when he learned that it was something else, that other people are concerned about, he didn't care one bit any more.
That seemed pretty clear to me, but... *shrugs*

Hopefully the comic will have positive effects, even if it is a slight jab at CoH.
On the other hand, the PA authors have never been known for their tactfulness, and can sometime be quite the opposite*.
*The lack of tact displayed, imho, had less to with the original comic and more to do with their string of responses to the backlash against it.
Humor, it is a difficult concept. It is not logical.

Looking over the FAQ for the City of Heroes shutdown reminds me of the time I found (and subsequently consumed/obsessed over/used as the template for a grim new religion) the documents which obliterated my parents’ marriage. It is an utterly, cruelly, unsentimental, unsparingly frank assessment of the things people never, ever talk about until it’s time to close the store. Before I died so many times in rapid succession that my XP Debt functionally entombed my main, the time I spent in City of Heroes was characterized by wonder and amusement. It was Cosplay: The Videogame in a lot of ways - I’ve never seen people take their characters so seriously, and invest so much. Regular servers were the equivalent of any other game’s dedicated RP shard. The peoplewatching was unparalleled, and you were almost guaranteed a reward for looking at someone’s profile. I saw my backstory field as an opportunity to reward such Trick or Treating, and I did my best to treat liberally while keeping tricks to a minimum. Not everybody played it, or understands “what the deal,” and since character creation is locked down they probably never will. It seemed like it couldn’t possibly be expensive to maintain it, but I’ve had it explained to me that it’s not about maintenance costs; it’s about turning that money, the people behind it, and the equipment sustaining it toward something new. That is no comfort, of course; people rarely think of their loved ones as fungible organic compounds. But, there you have it. |
Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

Yeah, the newspost came out like I thought. Tycho enjoyed the game for a time even if Gabe didn't. He groks it.

"To die hating NCSoft for shutting down City of Heroes, that was Freedom."
I remember when my main had accrued so much debt he was effectively unplayable. I had to wait until they imposed debt caps before I could make any progress on him again.
Of course, rather than quitting outright, all that debt on Chad got me to start playing some other characters more regularly and to make new ones... and to fall in love with Controllers... <3

I'm pretty sure people on these forums made Scott regret even posting about the SaveCoH efforts after pulling his message apart (just like is being done now). And Kurtz actually liked the game and had a connection to it.

As far as today's Penny Arcade strip goes, I'm pretty sure it was written as satire... though unfortunately the mark of good satire is that it is indistinguishable from seriousness by its target audience. The people who have no connection to City of Heroes will see it and say to themselves, "Yeah, what IS the big deal anyway? It doesn't affect me."
Worse, it could potentially be viewed by NCSoft as being serious--famous internet personalities actively do not care about City of Heroes.

If one assumes they (NCSoft) are even bothering to read stuff that pops up online regarding CoH...then you also have to assume they read his article about the comic and not just the comic itself.
I met Scott Kurtz once. He really didn't strike me as the sort of person to go out of their way to do anything if it didn't directly benefit him. I was unsurprised to find his motivation for that post was because City of Heroes had directed traffic his way in the past.

Yyyyeah, I can really see some NCSoft PR employee whose sole job is to keep tabs on any franchise the company owns/owned seeing the strip and running in to tell the president
"SIR, SIR, THE PA GUYS SAID IT'S NO BIG DEAL"
"Oh thank gods." *flips the switch to nuke the servers from orbit*

How do you meet someone - once, for what, 6 seconds? - and then make such a split judgement? What did he do, charge you $40 for an autograph and then insult your puppy?
|
I was the only person near his booth. He plopped his fat *** back down in his chair and picked up a comic book, then scowled at me until I walked away.
Also, my puppy is awesome. You betta reco'nize.

I loved this news post from Penny Arcade back in 2004:
I am often asked if a person should play World of Warcraft or City of Heroes, and its always interesting to me that it comes down to those two, like those are the only two things on the menu. Its never should I play, you know, Tabula Rasa or Asherons Call 2. Its also interesting to me that months before release, World of Warcraft is so potent even as a concept that it can cause people to fast on the entire genre rather than sully their palette. The short term answer is that you should play City of ******* Heroes. I mean, if youve already got this question in your mind, and you see all your friends on there immolating neer-do-wells, dont wait another second. Lean your head back, and tip the entire hors doeuvre tray directly into your mouth. You can cross this World of Warcraft bridge when you come to it. Dont forget, of course, that you can get a taste of WoW early provided you are a Night Elf - but thats neither here nor there. City of Heroes is great. Its a young, ebullient design that delivers the amusement payload of a Massively Multiplayer game while discarding much of the insulting busywork. And if you dont like it, well, I guess that answers your question. If you do like it, chances are good that Blizzards entry in the Massive genre isnt going anyplace. The trouble with trying to compare these two games is that even though both are played on large multiplayer servers which support thousands of players, thats virtually the only thing they have in common. Time was when you could expect certain things out of this space, gameplay wise. City of Heroes is really more like Diablo in that you largely just whack guys with abilities drawn from discrete skill trees, and since many of the missions you go on take place in instanced dungeons, the entire game experience usually just comes down to you and your crew - even on a server with fifteen-hundred other people. So, in your mind, put it at the far right end of the scale. On the far left, put the classic, long-running games we associate with the medium. Those games have a certain amount of self-flagellation - onerous death penalties, punishing levels which require double the experience, that sort of thing. City of Heroes doesnt have that kind of thing, but if it did, you wouldnt whip your own back with a knotted rope or a barbed whip. Youd would whip it with a sweet, soft strand of red licorice - a Super Rope. Youd probably like it. World of Warcraft is a good deal more traditional than that. This is because they are trying to make a genuine genre contender that is a lot of fun in its own right, wears off some of the more egregious offenses of Massive RPGs, but still lets refugees from other games go through this self-whipping motion that they have come to expect, and even demand. If you were attracted to City because it sloughs off the fantasy trappings for a modern metropolis, you might find that you dont need anything from World of Warcraft. Its awesome, dont get me wrong. I played it for several hours yesterday, and the day before, and the day before. But where World of Warcraft says, Here, let me show you a better way, City of Heroes says, You know what? **** Dragons. Those two distilled manifestos might be just what you need to pick your poison. |

Or not. But it's still funny.
I got the sense that it was like the Avengers movie where Tony Stark wanted to try out shawarma but I can be wrong.
Or maybe we should be sending gyro...
