Good-bye and hello, as always.

Not that it was necessarily complex, but for me the respec system has always been overly tedious and non-conducive to experimentation, especially for situations where only minor changes in slot numbers or resources were desired. I personally would have done much more experimentation and tweaking (and probably played more regularly as a consequence) with a more facile, non-linear interface for doing so.

How would it feel like CoH without mimicking the content?
-
I might log into it for nostalgia -- fly around the city, hit a few things, then log out.
I don't see an emulated server occupying the same role as the current game: a long-term, routinely returned-to source of entertainment. -
Nicely done! I thought Positron was particularly funny to watch from scene to scene.

I guess my take on NCSoft's 1st response is that while I don't necessarily believe exactly what they wrote in their response, I don't really have to, because what I'm reading between the lines becomes more abundantly clear with each passing day. What they choose not to say has importance on a level with what they are choosing to say.
Whether or not they made a good faith effort as far as selling the IP is irrelevant in the sense that they are the ones that will decide on a change in the course of their action, and they really need not make any effort to do so if they so choose.
I don't think that means efforts to communicate or bargain with them are wasted, but I do believe the odds of their acquiescing to an outcome that the playerbase would favor are pretty slim. -
Quote:Probably not / yes.My question to everyone is: in the event CoH can't be saved, can and will you get behind a spiritual successor/new super hero MMO?
It depends on what "successor" means. I'm not interested in playing a game that is a pale shadow of this one in some kind of anarchic, quasi-professionally-run, semi-dedicated format. It would need to be at least on the same level of professional maintenance/update/content as this one if not greater.
But superheroes? Definitely. I love the genre. -

Maybe NCSoft changed status with the BBB, and/or became a 'dues-paying Accredited Business'.
-
I'm afraid I couldn't agree to boycott a online information publisher solely for the reason that they're publishing articles about games from a particular company.
To expect that Massively would change its method of reporting or info sharing based on my disgruntlement with NCSoft is not fair to Massively or its readership. -
I am a little surprised that NCSoft issued any statement at all. They had seemed pretty content to let the silence speak for them.
I don't expect they'll say anything further on the matter after this, though. -
Quote:For me, it's more like the former. Most of my characters existed before CoH, and when they found their way into CoH, they were "altered" to fit its particular universe and history. So their CoH incarnations were more like parallel universe versions. The originals will continue to persist in some form, whether on paper, in CO, or in my mind's eye.Originally Posted by BrilligAfter all, it's my imagination that created these characters, and my imagination that fleshed them out over the limited feedback that a game can give to you.
Quote:My CoH characters live in the CoH world. My favorites all weave some part of the game lore into their back stories - its a big part of what makes them feel relevant to me. Because of that, they don't make sense anywhere else. Yeah, I could create a variation of them somewhere else, but they wouldn't be the same, because their backstory would have to change. -
I preferred the song lyrics to the medical encyclopaedia entries.

Quote:Ctrl-rightclick to turn them into random components for the new system.Quote:Control right-click to turn all old crafting components into rank 1 mods. You only need to do this to one stack, and it'll get everything in your inventory and bank. This also applies to any qliphothic energy you pick up in Unity missions, although stopping to harvest a single rank 1 mod at level 40 seems to be a bit of a waste of time.

Quote:That echoes my feelings on the matter.I don't think the art is bad as such, I think it's mostly a matter of taste. The faces don't bother me unless they're badly out of proportion, and I like the costumes.
And really, CO does some things CoH didn't do, in good ways.
One thing that is different (in a bad way, as far as I can tell) is that they re-vamped their crafting system such that the original system (the one that existed at launch) is obsolete.
I have all of these components that I earned two years ago that are seemingly worthless now -- I haven't found any information to suggest otherwise. It's not a major impediment, just disappointing. -
Hopefully the comic will have positive effects, even if it is a slight jab at CoH.
On the other hand, the PA authors have never been known for their tactfulness, and can sometime be quite the opposite*.
*The lack of tact displayed, imho, had less to with the original comic and more to do with their string of responses to the backlash against it. -
I watched it with the sound muted, it was markedly more enjoyable that way.

I didn't notice if anyone had mentioned it, but the fact that the playable characters were superheroes, and moreover player-created superheroes, was what made it unique (for me), and was the entire reason I bought in.
I know for others, it was the game mechanics, or the community, or the feeling of personal relationship fostered with the devs over time, but for me it was definitely the genre. Those other things were pleasant enough, but they were icing on the cake. If it hadn't been specifically about superheroes, I'd likely never have tried it.
There was no other video game at the time that offered the same level of ease and simplicity with which to create your own superheroic characters. Being able to play with friends was pure bonus. -
One of the nice things for me about video games as a hobby is that they're comparatively inexpensive.
About a year ago, I bought a car (for me, a high performance car) and was introduced to the world of the performance/car modding enthusiast, and wow, that stuff gets expensive quick -- even cosmetic or minor modifcations (like wheels/tires, exhaust) add up quickly, and "high end" mods like forced induction systems and the subsequent tuning required, get prohibitively expensive really quick. -
Quote:I remember that Pluto and Goofy were referenced in the book, but I don't recall if any ink was devoted to the search for a satisfactory answer to that question.Did it cover why Pluto is allowed to be naked, but Goofy has to wear clothes?
I always thought it was odd that the Roman god of the Underworld would spend so much time with a cartoon character. -
I thought Neil DeGrasse Tyson's book, 'The Pluto Files', did a pretty decent job of looking at the issue of Pluto's status from about as many pertinent and variegated positions as one might reasonably expect.

CO has been out since September 2009.
I initially had a bit of difficulty getting access to my original (post-beta) account as well, but after a bit of wrangling with PW support, it was worked out satisfactorily. -
Just wondering, how many MMOs have ever been "saved" by a fan campaign? Anyone got the numbers on that? Or, if it happens with CoH, would it be a first?
-
A longtime fan of the PnP game, I was in CO during the beta, got the lifetime sub (gold), played for maybe about 6-8 months, got one character to 20-ish and a few others into the teens, then went on hiatus and just got back into the game about a month ago.
It's definitely different from CoH in some significant aspects, some negative, but since I didn't play it for ~2 years, it feels new and fresh. Teaming is light, but I've been able to get help with a troublesome boss when I requested help, so there are helpful and friendly players. I'm in the CoX channel.
