  1. The world will not end. NCSoft can merely hit the pause button on us for a bit.
  2. Thanks! Verifying email address now!

    Heh.

    .....

WAH! Now see what I did to myself? And I just logged off of CoH practically in tears as it was....

The popularity of B&S in the East and its eagerly awaited arrival in the west, coupled with excitement over Wildstar and 2,000,000 copies of GW2 sold in its first month would probably indicate not so much.
Um, in case you hadn't noticed, Nexon's implant of a monetization manager into ArenaNet before it would buy controlling shares of NCSoft isn't exactly leaving GW2 players jumping for joy over that decision these days. And there's what can only be described as a complete $hitstorm happening over the current gear changes that ArenaNet had previously sworn they would never make, too. So yay for the original 2 million boxes sold before these changes went public: Warhammer Online and TOR sold a couple mill when they launched, too, and it saved them as well, amirite? :P

And I wouldn't exactly call B & S "eagerly awaited" in the west. Judging by various blog and forum posts and player responses, many see it as yet another cheesy Korean grindfest with little to offer anyone.

And Wildstar.....Carbine should run the hell away from NCSoft while they still can. You can't tell me there aren't other publishers out there who'd be willing to take them on.

And straight from Brian Clayton, NCSoft's reputation HAS been damaged by their closure of CoH (and not just by the fact that they're closing it but by the brutish, callous way they went about the whole ordeal) and they ARE in fact worried about that. As they should be. Blade & Soul, cheesy grindfest that it is, is making its way stateside at what will still be a very bad time in NCSoft's history reputation-wise.

So I hope this also means that whomever (Brian Clayton with private backers/Valve/etc.) had previously offered for CoH will feel compelled to try once again, then!

If only it were all this simple. Did NCSoft *really* hold out for some exorbitant sum mainly because of potential legalities before closure? And if so, then why wouldn't they just have told all those who put up offers initially to come back post-closure and make more bids then? Instead they posted the "FAGHETABOUTIT AND SHUT UP NOW" nonsense on the launcher and website, making it sound like they weren't going to sell, ever.

In any case, I don't particularly hold a lot of hope for Disney, but I'm willing to take the ten minutes required to type up some letters and send them off. After all, we don't need specific legaleze, we just need to tell them what the game and its potential continuation means to us.

But I truly hope Brian Clayton and what is left of PS hasn't given up on making another bid, if this admittedly shaky view of NCSoft only becoming willing to sell post-closure actually holds any truth to it.

    Scrappers

Hey, my first 50 was a scrapper, way back when! Katana/invuln, actually, and all I kept thinking for the entire 50 levels was,

"Dang, I wish I had gone broadsword!" :P
  7. I couldn't help jumping in with my 2 cents about NCSoft. I was polite, but I continue to make gamers aware of what they're facing by wasting their time and money with NC.

Posting only takes a minute, whatever your take on things....

Do you have dial-up internet then? I can't imagine you playing CoH at all if you do,and if you have cable broadband, FIOS or even the most basic DSL, you may be quite overestimating the amount of time it will take you to get the game downloaded again.

Try downloading it. I just think for account security's sake you shouldn't be giving out your login and password. Granted, this game is closing down. But

A.) you may have other NCSoft games that are still playable on the account and

B.) you may use that same login and/or password for other still active accounts or online business/forums you use

that either way could become compromised.

I'm sorry, I do feel sorry for you. But it's just too dangerous unless you can find someone you know really well, a family member or close friend who'd be willing to do that for you. Tell them to google the NCSoft launcher download; I just got a fresh copy of CoH onto my son's machine yesterday that way and it patched and fired up fine.

What level is the character? If you can get CoH installed again, you may also want to download the Sentinel character copy utility made by someone over at CoH Titan forums and copy her as well. That way if CoH ever crops up online again in any form in the future, you may possibly be able to play her as-is once again.
  9. Where CoH went wrong: Getting embroiled with NCSoft in the first place instead of finding a better, more supportive local publisher.
  10. I have really tried to like this game, but even for free, it still puts me into a coma.

I'm sorry. I did try. But it's way too dumbed-down and cookie-cutter. It's also overly-linear, and too solo-based for me (everyone's always got ...... over their heads watching repetitive close-up conversation movie clip # 234897 so you can't even get a team together, and all the storyline stuff is too solo-based anyway). It's sad when you can't even bear to play a game when it's totally free.

This is definitely NOT Bioware's best work by a long shot.

Just wondering what kind of timeframe people were thinking of here.
I think we have to remember that even Mercedes Lackey herself described this as quite a long shot that the "Wildcard Team" was going to try and pitch to NCSoft. Believe me, I'd love to see it work as much as Mercedes herself would, but we should all know going in that a favorable outcome is akin to winning the lottery. Mercedes actually used a "it would be like winning the lottery" type of anecdote when describing a potentially positive outcome from all this on the Titan forums in fact. But she then stated she was still going to buy the ticket anyway, metaphorically speaking.

So we can cross our fingers, and appreciate her efforts, win or fail, but that's about all right now.
  12. Haha, yes, I'm Denice.

Wow, Hitstreak worked for CompUSA too? Too bad we all didn't live closer; we could have a reunion lunch, lol.

Thank you, Golden Girl! You rock! Even if nothing comes of any of this, I hope all those involved know we appreciate their efforts, and yours too, GG, for staying grounded, helpful and positive and not feeding the trolls. Most of us have given up, including me, for the most part. Thanks for shining a little light here.
  14. Dear Prince,

I know it's a blast from the past as it were, but I noticed you have a copy of Computer Gaming World magazine on the desk in that first pic. I penned the Guild Wars review in that issue. In fact, I reviewed for CGW pretty heavily for the final four years they were in print, and reviewed CoV when it launched, too.

And guess what? For seven years, I worked for CompUSA, too (at store #425 in New England, starting in their tech shop and ending as Assistant Manager of my store). Hi! :P

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out how to block posters you don't like:

Top Left of your screen is the black USER CP button. Click it.

On the left panel of the page that comes up is the "Settings & Options" section.

Click "Edit Ignore List" in that section, type in the forum poster's name, and hit Enter.

Reap the benefits! :P And the poor, poor trolls begin to starve because no one is feeding them any longer!

Could this story of possibly selling after the shutdown just be a move on NCsoft's part to help dispel the huge post-shutdown negative PR apocalypse that they know is coming?

    My reasoning is this:
--NCsoft already gave us some BS about "exhausting all (selling) options".
--The shutdown date is a definite "start" time for us to take the gloves off and bring as much PR pain as possible. Hinting at the possibility that the game could only be sold after the shutdown might be an attempt to disorganize our efforts (by causing doubt via making us wonder if we still could save the game) and lighten the ton of bricks we plan on dropping (since some players will still be wary of irritating them to the point where they don't sell).

    Thougts?

Please, please, PLEASE pick my reasoning apart and show me that I'm just plain WRONG!
I want CoH to get its wakie and be back up and running!
    I hear you.

However, in that case wouldn't they have instead posted,

"Please try to have patience while we work out an alternative long-term solution" instead of what is equivalent to,

"Shut up once and for all! Je$^s!"

Well! That's basically what they said to us! :P

And I would think if they really wanted to temporarily halt this P.R. nightmare, they could always post an additional note on the launcher and/or website now. But they aren't doing it.

Honestly, I think NCSoft's entire game plan is to brazen out this firestorm and hope it dies out. It's just that Mercedes Lackey, her husband, and a few others don't see it that way, and are trying a last-ditch, long-shot plan to get the game going again post-shutdown under someone(s) else.

I really don't think NCSoft is planning on selling either now or after the game closes down. I just think Mercedes & crew are trying some sort of new angle to get them to see that it's their most profitable choice, perhaps not only in terms of actual cash in their hands but also as a salvaging of their rightly-earned, HORRIBLE reputation here in the west.

And I'm not sure that anything, saving CoH included, could ever completely repair that.

Thank you, Golden Girl, for posting this! Is this quote off the Titan forums? I did previously see Mercedes Lackey over at Titan mentioning a long shot she and a few pals over there were trying to pull together, so this additional info doesn't surprise me at all. She is another great ally we have in this fight to save CoH, and she's not one to give up. She actually mentioned prefacing all her future works with a permanent anti-NCSoft rant, not totally unexpected as she has actually written multiple stories about her CoH main that are still in print. She's really into this game, and even wrote some arcs for it.

I'm thrilled that Brad is finally going public with *something.* He's one of the missing links from this whole ordeal. And I'm ultra-thrilled (and I secretly wondered this myself) that most of the Paragon Studios team could still get pulled back if CoH's future changed.

Even if this falls to dust, thanks for posting REAL news and not attention-grabbing false b.s. like so many others have littered the forums with. And thanks to Mercedes Lackey and the others involved in this not-giving-up, last-ditch effort they're trying to pull together, whatever happens.

    Fansy Returns!

Sounds like thou fairest Fansy has a couple alt accounts he suddenly found the need to post with.

I call b.s. I would also like to remind everyone once again of all the other b.s. formerly spewed on these forums. Remember all the false rumors that have had to be debunked publicly by not only our own overworked mods but whole other development houses as well, who shouldn't have to interrupt their own business to do that. And it's all because some weirdos are so desperate for attention that they have to sink to this nonsense.

Honestly, the absurdity gets more extreme with every week that goes by. NC already said "fahgetaboutit, period, end of story." If they weren't going to hand the reins over to a then-still-together Paragon Studios at the peak of the SaveCoH campaign when they were taking the most damage, they're not going to get involved in any half-baked scheme with unknown underlings later.

Fansy should be banned, to be honest, as should the other false-rumor mongers. Take your entertainment from such a dufus if you will, but don't anybody believe a word of it.

I would have put this into the "Where are the devs going" threads, but they all keep getting derailed by argumentative trolls. So here we are with a fresh thread instead.

Let's see if we can keep track of the actual devs and former devs better in this thread, please.

    Fansy Returns!

    Uh...Fansy.

The last time we had some weirdo with strange, only partially-comprehensible speech pretending to have insider information, it was MishiLoveWhomever and she was spreading complete b.s. about this and that continuing on.... A mod had to come in and publicly smack her down.

Don't start ridiculous false rumors, okay? If you want attention for doing this you are two months too late-- we've had everything from some frog guy saying SOE made an offer to buy CoH two hours after the shutdown was announced (which John Smedley, the head honcho over at SOE, had to publicly debunk on his twitter to shut everyone up for Pete's sake) to stories of 80 million being offered by Trion Worlds to buy CoH....

    All complete b.s.

Our b.s. cuppeth overrunneth. Can you understand me now?
  22. Well....I know that CoH will be back in some form or another-- it is too beloved a game to sink for good-- but far and away most likely it will be as an underground emu.

I've got to back up my toons with Titan's program for posterity's sake. Wouldn't want to be starting over from ground zero if I had a choice about it....

I suspect, though, that the damage to NCSoft will continue for years if not infinitely, and I feel that Blade & Soul and Wildstar will be noticeably negatively impacted. And good enough for 'em. NCSoft deserves a shoe in the head even just for their longstanding reputation, never mind for this newest CoH closure.
  23. Yeah, I have to admit that the minute I heard it was going to be another tab-targeting, turn-based, attack-tray theme park, it fell right off my radar. It sounds like another cheesy cash-in copy of the WoW formula.

In this day and age, why can't it have the same real-time engine as the single player games do and keep the world intact as well? They run (albeit a little slowly) on ye olden days of yore's PS3 and Xbox 360 that are stuck in the Direct X 7 dark ages here. You can't tell me most PC gamers don't have at least those specs if not a lot better than 7-8 year old hardware!

And Tera manages the same real-time, FPS-type engine as Elder Scrolls (and Reckoning for that matter) have, with minimal instancing (they do offer mirrors of zones, but they appear to have high population caps).

C'mon, Zenimax, you could have done better.

    Trollers and Brutes rock!!

Fire/Empathy and Stone/Fire FTW-- two of my favorite all-time L50s.

And as to the AT evolution, I suppose I always thought Fenders were weak, but I managed to bring a dark/dark to 50 a couple years back and I still do play him occasionally, so I guess that's my answer.

Eesh. Oh well, I'm glad he's putting bread on the table, but personally I don't think I could work for a company that so nastily canned my entire former dev team and so unfairly deep-sixed a game I'd worked on.... Color me surprised on that one.

At least with Zwill and EA, he probably doesn't have any past negative experiences with them so they're more of a blank slate with a bad rep....
