I love these games. They improve as the series progresses, but I'd play from the beginning if I were you. Very visceral combat sequences, and quite forgiving gameplay (it's not 'easy', but not 'hard' either.)
  3. I may join this game. I am reading a post on their forums entitled “COH Refugee” and it’s making me both miss this game going away even more, and see a potential new home for the future. I hope to see many of you there in the future, once I join up. (I stil have one foot in the door at SWToR, but it has disappointed me somewhat.)

Sorry, I don't know you, but with a name like Hatred666, perhaps you have embraced your negativity too much.

As much as I hate the action of the owners, I don't hate the game.

So I'm not a big fan of this type of spiteful sentiment.

    I remember....

I remember marketeering, not the dirty kind, and earning my first Billion, after learning from the forums how to do it and not be a jerk.

I remember farming purples off the Cimeroran walls, with my Archery blaster, and marketing one purple IO at a time, and finally earning all the IOs to fully purple out Linarra, and then having enough money to feel pretty dang comfortable, and give stuff away.

I remember the astonishment when I switched from playing my sedate, cool, squishy, quiet killing machine Archery Blaster Linarra to my viscerally satisfying Dark/Fire Brute Knitefire (MORE FURY SMASH!), and then another equal shock and feeling of invulnerability when I worked up my Stone Tank.

I remember using Sandolphan’s MM keybinds from the forums to set up a really slick way to control my MM pets, and soloing from (basically) 1-50 with my MM.

[I remember getting really bored with my MM after that and haven’t played her in about 4 years.]

I remember thinking, “Wow, I’ll never be able to run an Ill/Rad like those guys” at many Hami raids (in the old, old Hami days when Pas were used as aggro magnets), then when I rolled one up, realizing they made a lot of the game trivially simple.

I remember the ITF race contests. I think my team may have won one of those, and Masque may have been on the team, or maybe Elegost and/or Ryxx; if I’m misremembering, I know we came close.

I remember a writing contest MP ran for character Bios where I used a really dark story that I had written the skeleton of long before. I think I may have won, but I think I also freaked out some of the judges.

I remember not rolling a scrapper because from all reports, it made the game too easy, and I resisted rolling a tanker because it was too survivable – and I’m glad about both those decisions, because I would have gotten spoiled.

I remember coming up with ‘ouchypants’ and using it on vent all the time.

I remember keeping the language filter ON the entire time I played since day 1, because the bleeped out words are infinitely funnier than the actual words (to me). Don’t believe me? Check this out.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-Wd-Q3F8KM

Ok, maybe not exactly the same, but if that didn’t make you cry, I’ll eat my hat.

I remember rolling an Archery blaster as my first character because I liked the Silent Death concept. I am still glad to this day for choosing her as my primary.

I remember back to back speed STF/ITF/LGTF runs.

I remember clearing the rooftops after an ITF. Nearly every time. Because those bastards had our purples!!!!

I remember thinking, “[fwip.] I don’t think a [fwip.] sharpened arrow is the right [fwip.] tool for ‘Arresting’ these guys [fwip.]– they probably won’t be [fwip.]making it to a [fwip.]jail cell, ‘cause I’m pretty good [fwip.]at this… Oh well, [fwip.]omelettes, eggs. [fwip.]”

I remember that MP ran nearly all these speed runs, contests, and events. Thanks again, MP.

I remember yelling at Des (on an alt) for not staying with the plan on a TF, then realizing he was the veteran targeter for the Hami raids I always mooched on, and feeling like a real boob.

I remember learning how to AFK farm, and being glad it had taken me that long to learn it, because again, I would have been spoiled. I think Masque was the one who taught me that to begin, but then a bunch of others brought me along. I still don’t know a lot of the techniques, just some basic ones.

I remember defending the Devs a lot of the time on the forums, but being disappointed with them on a few occasions. But I really felt they did a terrific job, especially now that I’ve seen at least one other MMO, where the devs don’t have the same (apparent) philosophy.

I remember thinking, in my naivete, until 9/2/2012 (I got the news late) that I would grow old, go to a nursing home, and introduce all my old cohabiters, to this awesome way to make the days not seem so long and unending, a great game that had been around for decades... wow.

    I remember all the Doomspeak:
    ED will kill the game!
    Villains will kill the game!
    IOs will kill the game!
No more Speed Katies will kill the game!
PvP 13+ will kill the game!
    Incarnates will kill the game!
All these raids will kill the game!

In the end, some perverse non-reason apparently killed the game.
Never let it be said that the players killed this game –
we gave this Mother ****** LIFE.
    Now I’ m riled.

    More later.
  8. I’ve been on an extended semi-sabbatical from CoH for about a year, playing other games, having a life, recovering from a flood, and preserving my wrists from The Carps as much as possible, though I have kept my subscription… so I feel very angry and betrayed by NCSoft, as I think we all do, for killing (from what little I can tell) is a profitable game. But besides the anger, I’m gonna miss the game, and especially the people, very, very much.

The game. My first goal was simple. I wanted to FLY. Free, 3D, open flight. And when I got in the game, I raced to 14, and I FLEW. I didn’t care that everyone said it was too slow, cost too many slots, you couldn’t fight in Fly, hell –I got to 6, and got HOVER. WOOT! I spent hours Sunday mornings hovering around, at like 6mph, collecting badges, pew pewing with my (pathetic) archer (suboptimal! Lethal damage! Why not a Fire blaster??!!). Raced to 14, got fly, what a feeling of freedom! Linarra is my main, she rocks, and she still looks almost exactly like she did when I rolled her up. When I got her to 50, I ran with a veteran group, and one of my fondest memories ever in gaming was when running a simple Family farm with a Stone tanker name F.A.T.E., a legend in my mind, and a few others, I dropped a Rain of Arrows at just the right time, and when all of the mobs silently fell over, he turned in my direction and said in chat, “What was That??” and I just said, “That is the Magic of Archery,” and I got a bunch of Lol’s back. I’ll always take pride in wowing, just a little, one of the more respected players in the game when I was just a wee semi-n00b.

After that, I played, experienced a variety of things (I was excited to be on a 7-person ‘Baka’ Rad team that dropped Lusca (6+1 ‘Bomb’) – never had a clue about the power of concentrated debuffing ‘til then!). I learned how to run the ‘Mystical, Magical’ AT that was the Ill/Rad (I named mine Liberal Media Elite, costumed as an homage to Stephen Colbert, one of my favorite costumes ever), (and after thinking for so long that it was really, really hard to play, I realized Ill/Rad usually made the game easysauce!!).

And after playing mostly squishy damage-dealing AT’s, I rolled up a Stone/Stone tank for Hami raid support… and it became my 2nd favorite AT ever. Screen-shaking, Rock-fist punching, Yellow-Mito-aggro-holding, Hami-taunting, I loved being an important cog in the wheel – from misc. damage dealer to Main Tank was a heady shift of responsibility, and though I failed plenty of times, the wins always made up for it.

But I regret: No SS tanks/brutes. No Invuln or Super Reflexes anything. No regen scrappers, only one scrapper at all. No dominators. No L50 corrs. My Water blaster is L1. No Plant anything. Never got a Hybrid slot (might try for this still). No stalkers. No crabs. Never got to really, really work on my base. I have about 100 purple IOs sitting in my base, about 1000 high money IOs sitting there, another 500 or so recipes on characters, waiting for the rest of the ATs I wanted to create someday.

The Devs, to their credit, made the game easier and easier to **play**, while giving us harder and harder challenges to face, which is so weird for MMOs, from what I hear. No loot?? But that’s a time sink! Make travel FASTER??? But it’s a time sink, more money! Make the characters stronger with stuff like IOs?? Faster leveling?? No real Death penalties?? That’s crazy! A rudimentary, but VERY flexible, and simple to learn, keybinding language?? Unheard of! Spend SO MUCH MONEY on a Costume Creator????? HOW many emotes, HOW many belts??? Where is the profit in THAT!!???!? But in these cases, and innumerable others, they gave us, as much as possible, in my opinion, the characters WE wanted, the heroes and villains of OUR imaginations.

And the funny thing is, (having only played one other game may make this of limited validity), when we got faced with a new enemy, I didn’t ever feel ‘weakened’ by a stronger foe in this game, while in others, I have repeatedly gotten the feeling that a new foe has seemed to bring, ‘You think you’re strong, with the best gear in the game – HA! You guys SUCK!’ from the Devs in those games. I felt there was a challenge, but the essence of the challenge seldom **invalidated my hero’s strengths**. All I can say is Wow, what an accomplishment. Thank you, devs for helping us realize some of our wildest, weirdest, funniest, best characters, in a game and an environment that is unlikely to ever be matched.

There are a lot, lot, lot of people to mention, so I apologize if I don’t name you. I’m just going to mention a couple by name, but know that I consider you all good friends and I appreciate you making my gaming experience here great. All the people I’ve interacted with, esp. on Vent, have really made my first MMO experience, and my longest (by far) videogame experience, really amazing.

First, Madame Pistacio, you are awesome. You are an amazing person, and a great friend. You really took me from being a clueless rookie n00b to a slightly less clueless, Veteran n00b. And you helped show me how to make “beelions” on the market, along with a few others. We didn’t always agree, but you are definitely one of the most accomplished leaders I’ve met in gaming and IRL. You really showed me some fun times, and I respect your skill and knowledge above anyone else in the game. Raids like clockwork, even when I leeeroyed at inappropriate times, even when I zigged when I should have shut the heck up. You made the game tons of fun for literally hundreds of people, probably thousands, with PERC, Costume Contests, PvP, PvE, and Forum organized events, Lam/BAF/MOM/Hami/etc. raids, and tons of other stuff I’m forgetting. Your analytical skill is really fine-tuned, and you gave me so many invaluable tips, I can’t begin to estimate. Thanks for having me at your wedding, thanks for putting up with me and my coffee highs, and thanks for greeting me with an extended, “Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnn!” whenever I popped on channel. Hugs forever.

Masque – Dude. Seriously. What the. You are almost unhealthily level headed. Which is why I think we got along so well, because with a few exceptions, usually when I had too much coffee (see above), I think we both kept our stuff together. I think one of the greatest things I’ve seen in gaming was the leadership you (with the help of others too many to mention, including MP) showed in the PvP Bootcamp effort to teach more people the ins and outs of Team PvP. All the late night arguments, the kvetching and yelling and arguing, in spite of all that - it was an unmitigated success in my opinion, and though lots of people helped, you really were the person that held it together and kept a solid vision for the project. I hope you take pride in your role in that, and know that you made the game a lot more fun for a lot of people, including me.

Not Putzing – she’s no longer in the game, but she actually introduced me to MP and Masque, among many others, got me to go to my first Hami raid, and saved me from leaving the game very early in my career because I hadn’t tried the ‘group’ thing much ‘til then. I have to mention her, because I would never have had as much fun in the game had she not ‘saved me from myself’.

Memphis Bill – He was one of the first people I gfriended, and we played together for a time, he showed me early on how to play a character well, and support the team… and later he showed me how to make lots of money on the markets as well, without exploiting, being a jerk, or shafting people. I’m glad to see he will be around at the end with the rest of us.

A shout out to Death Conqueror (DC), who passed away not too long ago. He showed me how to tank by example, and I learned to tank Hami from him. He will always be the quintessential Tanker to me. I wish I had had more time to continue his example.

So many others I can’t begin to name. In-game friends, Vent friends, all of you are awesome. The game brought us together. It’s such a wide-ranging game that I think it gathers people from many backgrounds, and I don’t know if this group of people could translate to any other existing game, though I wish it could. It met a lot of differing people’s gaming needs, and I can’t imagine another game filling all those niches.

It’s heartbreaking to know this place will be gone soon, because it holds a little part of each person that visited here. To me, Paragon City represents a place you can imagine yourself as something different than your ‘real’ self, and then be that alter ego in a way no other MMO, or videogame, or even computer simulation for that matter, has ever offered. You could go from a ‘Man’ build Human, to the most impossibly fantastical iteration of a 2-legged humanoid imaginable… and hang out in Pocket D, or smash Hamidon’s face, with everyone else. I’ll be sorry to see that disappear. I may post more, but this will likely be my longer ‘bye’ post.

Thanks for a great game – to the devs and to the players. You have given me a lot I can never repay. I call you all my friends. And I'll see you in the Next One!!

Just as an aside: are you being obtuse on purpose, MisterD?

Constant chance example: Power X has a 25% chance to KB.

Variable chance example: Power X has a 15% chance to KB with 1 Tidal Forces, 20% chance with 2 Tidal Forces, and 30% chance with 3 Tidal Forces.

    Is this not clear somehow?

You have to weigh the pros and cons. What are giving up for Hasten? Are you losing a power pool with performance improving powers to get into the speed pool? Is there another power you could have taken instead that would give you better performance in certain area? Did you lose access to a useful utility that might not enhance kill speed but be very useful in a variety of situations (like say stealth... yes yes I know you can take supers peed and/or use an IO but it's still a valid consideration and stealth isn't the only power of that nature)

Not every build needs tons of recharge and stacking tons of it can sometimes be redundant. What if your attack chain is already solid without it? More recharge isn't going to make you activate any faster. What if your primary "cooldown" can't benefit from recharge (like willpower's tier 9)?

Is Hasten powerful? Yes it is. I can't argue that. I will however argue that anyone who doesn't take it will be a lower performing character because of it because I just don't believe that to be true. Hasten can be game changing for certain power set combos and mainly if you can stack enough recharge to make it perma but it's not always necessary.

My Dom for example has perma dom without having hasten because I stacked a ton of recharge. Another 70% won't really change anything meaningful for him at this point. Sure I could lose recharge for other things with Hasten but then I have to micromanage two powers when without hasten I just just leave domination on auto fire and never have to worry about it dropping.

Math can say many things depending on the numbers you input. When you omit certain numbers your results will of course vary. Can you put a numeric value on my "convenience" factor for not having to micromanage my clickies? Probably not. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't impact my performance.

Can we get back to talking about the upcoming power pool news now instead of trying to rationalize nerfing Hasten?
Sure, I'll drop it, but please, please, as others have said before in the thread - admit that for nearly all primaries and secondaries (a 90% estimate seems conservative to me), Hasten is VERY beneficial.

In the simplest example I can think of, you could have a 'tight' attack chain, but with Hasten, you could probably drop the worst of the powers in that chain and increase your damage by using (n-1) attacks, for example. And fewer attacks, to me, means more space on my 1-0 keys for things I need more often. And having my powers up when Iwant them is better than having my powers up almost when I want them.

Also, what are you gving up for stacking all that recharge in your IOs? You think you can drop 70% worth of recharge IOs in exchange for, say defense... or damage... or running speed? As you say, it's a tradeoff.
But convenience is a personal choice, and if you're talking about performance, I don't think you have a leg to stand on arguing against Hasten.

There are, of course, exceptions. But in general, not choosing Hasten is a mistake, imo.
  17. I foresee the possibility that this list will be used AGAINST us sometime in the future.
