New appreciation for COH

So I bought this other game, (Not COH) last month it cost me $60 USD to play. I logged in after a patch and noticed my account was banned, I checked my email and to cut a long message short I was banned for X,Y, and Z. I petitioned saying why I haven't been doing X,Y,and Z and the next day the Devs in this game told me there findings were final. Final as in my appeal was for nothing and their findings were valid. I responded by saying you just lost a customer for not just the current game but for any other games produced by this company. The customer service manager said due to security concerns the punishment may be harsh but it was the only way to flush out the real cheats/bots from the game. I would have to purchase another, "License" if I wanted to play this game again. I'm not paying another $60 for the same game for security issues they can't fix. Even on this game's forums it's been addressed that people's accounts have been hacked.

I have a new found appreciation for this game after playing 4 years after this incident with this other game. I'm Very appreciated that COH doesn't have this security issue and if there was the Devs here listen to their players. In fact if there was any fear of hacking a warning would be given out to it's player base. I'm 95 percent sure how my account was hacked and it had to do with their real time money marketing options. I feel safe that I can enter Wentworths and knowing I won't have the same issue with COH as I did with this other game. I'm very appreciative the Devs are interactive in COH not a customer service rep.

Thank you COH if I haven't said it enough.

By all means thank the devs, but I see it the other way around.
The CoH devs are doing their job, and the devs on your alternate game aren't, hardly room for a congratulations based purely on the devs on a different game is it ?

Ah. I was confused by this line until I got to the second paragraph.
You bought *A* game, which was not City of Heroes, and had a problem. I was reading it literally; "So I bought THIS game last month".

That's exactly what I thought at first. The OP wasn't specific in the beginning that the game he/she bought was not CoH.

1 Thing I have noticed over the last month or so: RMT spam in the help channel, and spam bots in Wentworth's/Black Market are practically non-existent now. I think they may have finally found a way after all the complaints and petitions to get rid of the spammers almost for good.

After playing Guild Wars on and off for almost 6 years, I'm familiar with bot-like behavior and I don't recall ever coming across any character in CoH that exhibits such behavior. That's partly why I love this game. That and the great friendly community.

Oh no sorry for the confusion I was stating the other game has issues, COH absolutely rocks. *Original post fixed.

I too have always felt protected here as well. Although I have wondered if that would change if Coh was an extremely popular MMO with high millions of players too.

Eh, they release content that I can't use unless I wait an additional 2 months for 800 points or spend even more money on top of my $15 subscription... so no.. I am losing love for the CoH devs. Not sure what game the OP is playing but he got Banned for doing something wrong.

Gotta admit that if wasn't completely addicted to this game I would have left once VIP suscriptions didn't include new updates too.

I will be honest, the Devs here have done a lot right, and some thing that I don't agree with.
As far as the OP goes, there are a bunch of games and companies out there which really don't give a crap at all about players. A recently released MMO pissed me off when I was having problems with their Beta code, and their response was, sorry you'll have to find some place to get another code (I had gotten the code from a reputable graphics card company an hour before). This company lost any business they might have gotten from me.

This is the world we live in.

As opposed to pre-Freedom where you had certain content that you simply couldn't use unless you spent additional money on top of your $15 subscription.

Nobody ever promised a free solution for people subscribing to "I want it all! I WANT IT ALL! I WANT IT ALL! AND I WANT IT NAO!"

Does it suck having to wait a little bit if you want it "free"? Sure!
BUT YOU GET IT FOR FREE.

It's just like Wentworth's, really, right down to having a crappy UI.

VIP subscriptions *DO* include new updates.
Does it include *ALL* new content? No. But the subscription never included all content in the past, either. Please see: Going Rogue, Mutant Pack, Cyber Pack, etc, etc, etc.

COULD the Paragon Market have a better UI?

Sure!

But this is the one that Paragon chose by going with whoever these yahoos are that they partnered themselves with, rather than building it in-house and fully incorporating it into the game interface.

Not that Paragon's ability to build interfaces is particularly stellar either.

As several other folks have pointed out, there have always been extras (costumes, powersets, content) that we've had to pay for on top of our subscriptions. The only thing that has changed is that the system for getting those extras is now a bit more flexible.

I'm pretty sure I know what game the OP is referring to as I've been monitoring those forums recently. They have had an issue with a particular feature that has indeed caused several accounts to get banned just from using it. So, in this case, I'm willing to give the OP benefit of doubt.

There's nothing like looking in to another game's forums to bring home a certain appreciation for CoH Community. In some other places, there is a tone of "our way or the highway", or even just silence. While we may not always agree with our devs and mods, they at least set a tone for reasonable discussion.

Content? I consider the content of the game to be the things to do - arcs, trials, strike/task forces, and the like. VIP members get all that. There are some power sets and costume pieces that cost more - but how often did we get power sets under the old system.

Consider Street Justice. I asked for something like that in CoH beta, and have asked for it periodically since then. The answer was, well, there's martial arts power set, there's super strength, so it's all covered. They didn't see the addition of the power set something that would help sell new subscriptions or retain subscribers.

With Freedom and power sets available for real money sale, they can justify creating these power sets that have some overlap with existing ones, but flavors that make them in demand. And I'm happy to have paid for SJ.

I would like more power sets free with VIP, and perhaps the concept that all "cool" sets become paid and more prosaic sets are free needs reconsideration. But that's the win-win to a micro transaction system, things make economic sense to the company to make when they can charge for them that might not when it's just "add one more option to the game", and players get the things they want (and don't have to get the things they don't).

If VIPs have to start paying separately for zone unlocks, feature unlocks, or arc unlocks, there I'll agree they are abusing their members.

heck, my account got banned here in COH once for RMT people getting on it and I got unbanned when I sent in a panicked email. I've been really grateful they listened to me and been super careful with my account since. The support staff's always been good to me.

Wow, that's all they did? You got off easy. A few years back, I tried another MMORPG for a couple of months. I got a little e-mail nastygram saying that I had been doing X, Y, and Z, and the next day, this guy shows up AT MY HOUSE. He rang the doorbell, and when I opened the door to find out who it was, he kicked me in the nads, yelled, "DON'T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!", and ran away.

Holy crap, I'm still sore just thinking about it. Needless to say, I won't be going back to that game again. Still, just to be safe, I wore a cup to the Player Summit last April to ask any controversial questions. Our devs are the best, though; I didn't even need it once. (Well, except to have a little fun with the TSA, but I digress...)

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

I can actually say I went to hell and back in this other game I won't even give the courtesy of mentioning. The old saying goes you don't know what you got until it's gone is true. Fortunatley I can still come back and know my account hasn't been hacked. I can't say the same for the other game, it's a shame when you need to buy additional security measures..(cough...authenticator...cough) to ensue being protected.

Just for the record I didn't do anything to get myself banned. All I did was log into a game play a few hours, log in play and log out rinse and repeat. I believe my account was hacked using their Real time money house, I posted something for sale and after a few days I get banned. I'm sure I wasn't the only one but when the Devs over there do a mass ban becuase of security hacks, you can bet cheating is pretty bad there.

Thanks Devs for keeping players accounts safe and most of all listening to your players.

Same here!

Even when the problem cited has been found to be my own error, not a single one has addressed me "You Big Doofus," which I greatly appreciate.
