City of Heroes 2 production starting, City of Heroes retirement
A link would have been better.
And that really doesn't confirm anything more than we already knew; they have the copyright on the CoH2 name and the tech and forum side of it. Wether anything is actually going to come of it is a whole different ball-game.
And it sure as heck ain't going to be soon, either, even if there is.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
But seriously, the posts above state what needed to be said. If there is going to be a CoH2, it isn't going to be out for a long time.

Even if CoH2 does get off the ground - which is highly debateable currently - let's not forget that NCSoft is happy to run more than one generation of its games side by side.

It kind of amuses me that people are making such a big deal out of this. I mean, of course they're working on CoH2, depending on how loosely you define "working." They probably have been ever since the original launch of CoH six years ago. Someone probably has a file somewhere of features and changes they'd like to make in a possible sequel. Some of them may have even played around with game engines or started prototyping a new engine, preparing for when the project gets legs.
As for registration of the name and such, it's really silly to leap from "they filled out paperwork" to "they're working on the game." Just about any IP guru will tell you that you don't wait until you're ready to release something to do all the paperwork. You do it years before, so that when you are ready to go forward with announcements, your a** is covered.
Does anyone here remember that Cisco actually had trademarked the name iPhone and that Apple had to pay a not insignificant amount to use the name? Or that as if that weren't bad enough, they did the exact same thing with the iPad (I'm sure Fujitsu is grateful for the unexpected windfall)? Thinking back even further, who here remembers when Microsoft announced the Xbox, they had not bothered to register xbox.com as their domain name? As I recall, they had to pay a pretty penny to buy it off the lucky schmuck who owned it.
Imagine if I had gone out there and registered or otherwise acquired the rights to the "coh2" name. Before you think, "But Tony, City of Heroes is their IP, they could have made you turn it over," consider that the three letters Cee-Oh-Aitch aren't "owned" by NCsoft. Among other things, it is the NYSE stock symbol for a company named Coach, Inc.. I also see it frequently used as the abbreviation for the popular RTS Company of Heroes. What's to stop Relic from registering CoH2 to represent their game? Well, now, the fact that NCsoft has beaten them to the punch will stop them.
So please, put away the conspiracy theories. Put away the wild speculation. Will there be a CoH2? As long as CoH doesn't tank, yeah, I'm almost certain there will be. That's not news. Is it just around the corner? Hell no. Keep in mind that it was over four years between the launch of City of Villains and Going Rogue. And as you can imagine, the massive brunt of their development effort has been going towards Going Rogue.
So even if (and that's a big if) they're toying around with CoH2 now, and even if (and that's an even bigger if) they made it into a full-scale project after Going Rogue launches, I imagine that it would be at least three to four years out. We may--and I'm being optimistic here--have it by the tenth anniversary.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
Completely inaccurate OP is completely inaccurate. This thread should be deleted for misinformation.

Biggest Troll on the forums? I'll give you a hint:
If this is the case, would they finally be free from Cryptic? I suppose as long as they use a completely new engine?
"if I am guilty for what goes on in my mind, than give me the electric chair for all my future crimes"
i wont buy a new computer for this game..but i might for cox2. i see alot of truth in this since even you guys cant deny that the game has lost tons of subs and people come and go so much now due to lack luster issues, too many nerfs to count and the inability to do anything with a out of date engine its really in its best interest if they wanna stay employed to move onto the new stuff.
sure gr is coming out. but i think its alittle too late to be the "saving grace" if you will..
frankly just finally merging servers would be a better start to helping this game and i know alot of you wont like that but lifes tough and so is a game not making as much money anymore.it is after all a buisness first ,game 2nd

Yes. But a journalist working for a games magazine has also seen them, and wrote about them in his column. And now someone has posted that column on the official forums, with a title that implies CoH2 is all but confirmed to replace CoH. Tomorrow, someone on Kotaku will write an article about CoH being slated for retirement, using this thread as the source. And so it goes.

They aren't always pretty.
Whether they are going ahead with CoH2 or not, I would play it in a few years whenever it would get released. If I still have interest in this game, I would gladly keep a sub for both.

CoH has a much higher retention than most MMOs. At its highest point, we had approx 210K subs. We are currently sitting at (best guess) 110 to 140K subs. WoW has a much higher rate of churn than we do with people subbing and lapsing and resubbing. Does that mean that Blizzard should pack it in?
Have you ever looked at WoW patch notes. A heck of a lot of nerfing goes on there, too. MMO designers must strike a risk / reward balance and hold to it or risk losing people to boredom (if the game is too easy) or frustration (if the game is too hard).
WoW came out a year after CoH, which means that WoW's engine is almost as "out of date" as our own. I guess Blizzard should pack it in and develop WoW2 (by your logic, anyway).

If you aren't WoW, 100K subs is considered healthy. 11 servers for 100K+ (CoH) subscribers is reasonable. 87 servers for 250K (Conan), not so much so. As it is, after merging servers, Conan still has three times the servers (around 30) for less than three times the population.
And for your talk of "lackluster issues," "declining subs" and "out of date engine," I notice that you are still here and that you haven't dropped CoH for Champions Online. They have a "more up to date" (or, as is the case with all software, maybe "less out of date" is more appropriate) engine and the same content style as WoW (which means it must be good). This tells me that, despite your complaints, CoH is still the best superhero MMO on the market. I suspect you will still be here complaining after DCUO comes out. I would be surprised if you prove me wrong.
New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
There are no plans for retiring CoH. This game is still very robust and vibrant, and we're all very excited to be continuing its development.
As the Anniversary title stated, 6 years and going strong.

Even if they are actively working on CoH2, we have a couple of years yet before it will be ready. A good MMO takes time to build.
