  1. Alfred is a former soldier and combat veteran, so using a gun isn't totally out of character. But is doesn't fit in the Batman mythos, so no.

    A question...

More likely your own computer was making connections *to* NCsoft from those source ports to port 443 (basically, an HTTPS connection) and for some reason NCSoft's website didn't process those connections correctly or quickly enough. After your workstation closed those ports and opened new ones, at some point NCSoft's web server responded to your computer on those ports not realizing your computer had already closed them. Your firewall saw your computer close those ports so it no longer tracked connections on them. Then it saw packets coming from the web server heading for those ports, those packets were not, as far as it knew, part of existing connections, and it saw a bunch of them heading to a range of consecutive ports in a short time window. So it triggered its port scan IDS signature.

However, the odds of NCSoft sending a port scan *from* port 443 is fairly low, and more significantly no one who port scans would only scan a few ports in the 16000's - that's a worthless scan: nothing runs there generally.

You see this most often when the target server (in this case the web server) is highly loaded or overloaded, or the network connections between client and server are lossy and dropping or misrouting packets, also due to network congestion. You will see, as you mention, bursts of activity like this and it will often trip port scan signatures in many firewalls.
Yeah this makes sense, because right before the time of the log entries I tried to access my account and got the "Site down, try again later" message.

Okay, "mystery" solved as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, I'm at work. No NCSoft launcher on this PC, now or ever. I went to the NCSoft website with my web browser.

    A question...

OK, so I just canceled my CoH account. I had been planning to do so when the game went F2P, regardless of the whole EULA discussion.

However, please see the following from my firewall logs:

    Quote:
    09/20/2011 08:45:34.320 - Alert - Intrusion Prevention - Possible port scan detected - 64.25.35.220, 443, X1, us.ncsoft.com - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, 16288, X0 - TCP scanned port list, 16292, 16291, 16289, 16290, 16293
I had logged in to the NCSoft website to cancel my account, and I just happened to be doing my daily review of the firewall log files at about the same time. That's when I noticed the above. Note that there were several entries like this, but I only posted this one.

So, yeah....NCSoft and/or Paragon Studios employees reading this...care to explain why your web server is trying to port scan my PC?
  6. I used to love his posts - sometimes his many, many posts From his posts I got a lot of info on upcoming movies, comics, games and such that I otherwise wouldn't have gotten, or at least heard about much later. I guess in the overall scheme of things it's not that much, but he did bring some joy into my life.

    Farewell, Lord_Of_Time.

After watching 60 seconds of a TV show, I should not have been able to predict the next big plot twist. It's sloppy, lazy writing.
The real problem with you only watching for 60 seconds is that you thought this was a "big plot twist". It's a minor (at best) aside to the plot, meant to provide a humanizing moment for one of the main characters (as Arbegla has already noted).

Judging something off of just 60 seconds of viewing is...cliche.

    Cowboys & Aliens

I saw C&A on Friday, and I enjoyed it. There were some cheese-tastic moments and a good bit of the dialog was flat and uninspired (there were 9 writers IIRC), but overall the movie delivered a fun couple of hours of entertainment. My wife, son and I all gave it a good, solid B+.
  11. My first week in the game, I saw a character with the name "Stupid Sexy Flanders", and they had done a really good job of making Flanders' ski outfit. To this day I wish I had known about the /screenshot command at the time.

Oh, I think the show did a fine job of finishing itself off, with muddied plots, retcons of retcons within the same season and no coherent idea of where the show was going. It could have been great, but it just kinda fizzled.

    Man of Steel....

They're probably searching for *just* the right Lex Luthor real-estate plot. Because it's not a Superman movie unless Lex is trying to kill millions of people to increase the value of his real-estate.

"A Dance with Dragons" is already out, released on July 12. Or are you talking about a different book?

It does in "Make Room, Make Room", the book the movie is based on. Soy (soy beans) + lent (lentils) = soylent.

Gotta agree with this. Although Beaker as Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish is pretty sweet.
  18. Just finished book 4 last night, and now I'm in withdrawal. I've been reading the series exclusively (except for my weekly comix), and I didn't think to order book 5 until last night. So, four or five days until I can start the next book. I can do this. It'll be ok.

I certainly hope Martin doesn't take forever with book 6. I read the end note in book 4, and he says (paraphrasing), "I hope to have the next book out next year." That was in June 2005, and book 5 didn't come out for 6 years! He better pick up the pace on this one, or I might have to hunt Martin down and go all "Misery" on him.
