Alfred is a former soldier and combat veteran, so using a gun isn't totally out of character. But is doesn't fit in the Batman mythos, so no.

Also you have to take into account conservative print runs and comic shops. Comic shops are likely buying no more than double what they usually do while they have several times that coming in to pick up titles and thus why they are selling out.
As far as 2nd issue it's in the psyche of some new people to go get them and give them the benefit of the doubt. however that doesn't mean that in the long run they will sell better and might in fact sell worse considering they aren't creating habit for most of those new reader and the old reader are leaving.
