EU gets shafted - AGAIN!
Well, if you're screaming about how awesome the EU is and that they should be given equal investment to the NA market it's a good idea to put more effort into convincing them than yelling at the wrong people. But, it's kind of pointless arguing beyond that. People here seem hellbent on playing themselves as victims.

The first two years was great over in the EU. I personally wasnt here for the first few months when the EU side launched but have been here ever since. As with most games, the general population would obviously decline as time goes on and everybody accepts it.
However . . . . . . when a major new expansion comes out and its been hailed as the potential saviour of our EU servers within a lot of the playerbase [just log in to any of the EU servers and ask around, most people would say it], and then we get told its not being placed within our stores then i feel we personally have a right to feel generally worried and concerned for our "homes".
Not one person so far has said that having it as a download is a bad idea [more options always welcome], the problem being stated is that there is now a fear that our servers will continue to decline due to no new players. The US ones should flourish and rightly so from the new expansion, old players and new ones will be coming back to check it out.
Let me give a very good example too. Which of the following servers would you pick if your a new player?
EU: 4 servers, 2 of which are english, 1 german and 1 french.
US: 12 servers [iirc? Cant really remember off heart without looking]
EU: Union tends to peak at just over 200 players mark. Defiant just over half that. Vigilance just under half it and the german server [sorry cant really remember how to spell it] everytime i've logged on to it hasnt been over 50.
US: Majority of your servers have a lot more players than our busiest one. If worried about players being on at different times, then freedom/virtue would be fine since even your "lowest numbers" beat our peaks.
EU: Population slowly declining with no real advertising/merchandising to give the belief that it'll grow
US: Both GR and AE boxsets will have been available within stores in just over a year difference to give customers the impression that its a constantly growing business/game and would get new players.
We all have a lot of group of friends ingame who we like to talk/play too, but if theres no new players coming in then whats the motivation to keep us here? I dont want to play on a "private server" as such. I've even logged onto the french and german servers from time to time to team with people who i dont know [still love teaming with the french players!]. The EU population is currently a very loyal bunch of people who have for the last 3 years seen our community reps/communication dwindle constantly. Merger of the forums helped greatly with the communication part and we are only now starting to see dev/mod created events on our servers too.
Seemed like it was starting to pick up and that the future seemed bright with GR, now . . . . all the bad memories are coming back

Dam right
Good words Damz. Good words.
Myself I had great hopes for a retail box version. It would be great for marketing CoH, it would increase the chances for new EU players on EU servers (and thus more money for the company).
If Marketing says its not economical wise enough to expand the EU servers (Then why on earth did you keep the playerbase seperated?) well take a look at the amount of work that marketing does in Europe.
Last I saw... there where NO work done by marketing in EU.
As said more eloquently by several players above: A retail box version that customers can see, touch and BUY in the store would be great commercial for Paragon Studios. There would mostlikely be more players coming in and getting hooked by the game and the EU servers might get very filled. (Well i can hope)
Please if you have any interest of joy of having EU servers, don't leave us behind on this one. Make us a GR box retail in stores.
or
Just merge the serverlists already. After all that is how it seems to end.
Why on earth you make seperate servers/ companies the whole works in the first place is beyond me.

As for the Server rant bit; Server LIST merge isnt the same as an actual Server merge. List merge just means that all the servers are on one choice list, not stuck being EU/US. Server merge = Bad. List merge = probably good.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Very well said Damz. A good summary of how things appear to be in the EU at the moment and something that I hope somebody takes notice of given our plight...
*ahem*
Apologies. I was in danger of whining and playing the victim there. I guess I'll just kick back and accept things as they are instead of voicing an opinion...

Hi all,
I just wanted to let you know that we've definitely heard you and we have forwarded your concerns to the right people. I know this is probably not what a lot of you want to hear at this time but we are not ignoring you.

but thank you for letting us know that there is someone listening to us and taking on board our concerns!
Whereas if you lose money from simply distributing the product, then you face an even bigger issue.
|
Your argument doesn't hold water for the following reasons:
1) The actual production costs of a box, a disk and artwork will be minimally extra compared to the production cost of the NA box. Distribution costs won't be significantly higher than any similar product. Clearly NCSoft have a marketing and distribution network extant in the EU because they have other product on the shelves right now.
2) The revenue model of the City Of franchise is one of subscription. Therefore they only need to cover one month on a new box. Arguably the box itself could well be a loss leader - one 6 month subscription will pay for 5 boxes that don't last one month, so assuming that there's an even relatively low percentage take up, it's a win for NCSoft.
Given that the majority of the cost of the product development has been paid for in developing it for the North American market (only slight changes need be made for box design etc) it makes very little sense not to ship the product to the EU.
The GvE edition seemed to sell well in the EU - and given that the EU servers have been running for a well over four years, there's clearly a market for it here. This is not a strategic business decision from NCSoft but it smacks more of a backroom political decision aligned to the effective closure of the Brighton offices.

I have never complained about the way the EU players are treated before, but this time I am really dissapointed. I was looking forward to going to the game shop on release day and buying a brand new Going Rogue box. I far prefer having a box and all that comes with it to some souless download.
I does feel a bit like the EU servers are slowly slipping into a coma at the moment. I was hopeing that Going Rogue would be a major shot of adrenaline for the EU servers but if its on download only then I have serious doubts.

Excellent thoughts, I never disagreed. I do however disagree with the idiotic way some people are shrieking into this thread, and not even bothering to address their comments outside of the forum. I don't know about anyone here, but when I have a complaint I tend to give it to the people its directed at. As for playing the victim card, look at the comment I received under the reputation tab: If "aim your complaints at the people who can do something" is taken as "EU are inferior", then too bloody right people are going to look like they're painting themselves as victims. It's all rabbling and declaring how awful the situation is, yet not one of you seems to have any sort of drive to pursue answers outside of this thread. You know how to get in touch with NCSoft - try exercising some of that passion in the right way, rather than just a collective circle-jerk of "IT SUCKS". /edit - At any rate, this will be my last post in the thread. Now we have to hope that it's elevated to Marketing (bless their black and shriveled hearts ) and a decision about both the pack and the future of the European servers and player-base is decided upon.
I don't see this decision as a sneaky backroom deal at all; it's the result of CoH/V's MA box not exactly bringing back in huge numbers back to CoH/V. There was a player spike, sure, but the financials have been downhill since. NCsoft would know exactly how many MA boxes it sold in 2009 in EU and I'd gather it was not that many (and yes, distribution would definitely have been an issue, but that's not how these decisions are made - it would be the absolute numbers that would be considered).
NA has always been CoH/V's main market. EU was a side venture that NCsoft pulling out of Europe has pretty much scuttled. Now, with player numbers decreasing, the focus is on bringing back players to the NA version of the game.
And yes, I think that EU server closures (merged into NA) are likely. Probably after GoRo launches because otherwise it becomes a negative story about CoH/V's health prior to their big box expansion launching.
I say all this as an Australian who will be most likely buying it online since local physical distribution is unlikely.

Ok. point in the direction where i CAN voice my "views". i dont seem to see a marketing section here. i started here cos its the first thread i saw this in and im not going to double post.
i dont think people are serious about the tv adverts cos they are a huge investment and unsure if we would even see a above spending return from them. i think people only use it as an example because of wow and even then i personally dont know if the return from those adverts made it worth it. but prompting to places where gamers alike visit/view is what most of us except marketing to aim at within the EU. we dont mean flood the world with stuff but at least....something.
