I dont meen to bring a bit of downer on things after the great news from Avatea (I know it made me feel infinitely better after hearing we have been listened to) and some of the cool stories people have shared but has anyone noticed they haven't bothered putting the Issue 17 news on the http://eu.cityofheroes.com/en/ website, only the US one?

If you wanted to be technical you could say we havent had the last THREE website updates that they have

The update for it though is in the News > Game Updates part of the eu website. I cant really bring myself to nit pick TOO much though, even though i WANT to sooooo badly

I'm guessing that the only thing stopping a server list merge is technological issues.

From the apparent structure of NCs CoX operation I'm guessing it'd be easier (and that generally means cheaper) to just run a single NA-focussed list/operation. And if it is easier/cheaper then I guess it's only problems in performing an actual merge that would delay it.

Though I'm slightly surprised that the server-transfer took place before a list-merge.

Unless...

Maybe the server-transfer was to see if any NA servers end up practically empty... and so providing a potential new home for EU players if they chose to effectively merge the EU servers with selected NA servers.

Would be a way to get us all on one list using the existing hardware/infrastructure and hopefully causing fewer name clashes.
(Any list-merge would inevitably cause global clashes but if a server could be virtually cleared before a merge then local name clashes would be less likely).

The main problem stopping a merge is the French and german servers. The languages are on the client side, meaning all sorts of issues. They can't very well only put the English servers on the list.

As much as it pains me to say it, IF a merge is going to happen then they'll probably just close the German server (Sorry!) and possibly allow the French one to continue on the off chance some Quebecouise (sp!?) might use it. I'm not sure of the population levels on Vigilance and Zukunft but they can't be very high can they?

It's quite possible that is what this new updater was all about... To allow the localisation.

If they did do a merge, they would transfer both the French and German servers as well as add a Spanish one. If they knew what they were doing.

Admittedly some strings will be clientside, but I think the problem is that much is server-side and changing it to a client-side implementation is potentially a big job.

It's effectively a similar problem to the one they had with hardcoded colours stopping power customisation for years. And I'm pretty darn sure that, like power colours, the devs would have done it differently with hindsight.

Hardcoding values is very, very rarely, if ever, a good idea unless it's unavoidable (for performance or storage).

Whereas this aspect I have posted on before - though I think I also wondered whether Pennsylvania still has any sizeable German-speaking population...

The only good thing about having multiple-languages available by server is that you can occasionally jump on another server and try brushing up a little of your language skills that have lain forgotten since school! I know I've popped on the German and French servers and just about managed - and learnt a few new words...

The French-speaking part of Canada? Lets see. French-speaking population in Europe: France (65.5M) + a third of Switzerland (=2.5M) + half of Belgium (=5M) = some 73 millions. German-speaking population in Europe: Germany (82M) + Austria (8M) + a third of Switzerland (=2.5M) = roughly 92.5 millions, together 165.5 millions, as opposed to one fourth of Canada = some 8.5 millions?

(I dont see your problem though. The European version gets along fine with switching between German, French, AND English servers. So if everyone uses the European version after a merge, everything will be fine, not? Only that it then has not 2 but 13 English servers to choose from.)

It's both client and server side.

Interface language client side, mission text, NPC chatter etc. server side.

am i wrong with thinking it was only the EU updater that got trashed (and for me still is and getting no help from anywhere!?!?!) grrrr if it is we get treated like crap and we deserve better! we have been playing and paying just as long as the people over seas!!! (if everyone got a bad updater ignore me need to vent fixed this thing twice just for it to piss me off and bust it again!)

Pity you did not get any help in the main thread, but here is something that worked for a few players in my sg, they did this:

Back it all up just in case.
Leave the .prv alone. Is what we did.
Delete your old CohUpdater.EU.exe.
You should have a file called CohUpdater.new, change it to CohUpdater.EU.exe.

Just make certain you have a file called cohupdater.new or have downloaded the cohupdater.exe from the location that Rent gave in the main thread.
Hope you get back in.

I've just posted again on the main thread for the updater problem.

Now I can get in after renaming but as soon as I shut the PC down it all goes wrong again

Now I have Test and live (in different folders on the same drive) test works everytime had no problem with that at all. Live on the other hand has been a pig.

Is this something that has only affected some of the players? I didn't notice any change to my updater... then again, I usually bypass the updater link and only use it when a new patch is applied.

Where exactly is this new updater available for download?

It seems to affect some of our players. I was affected, then just deleted the said file, renamed the updater, started it then cancelled any progress (quit program), then renaming it to cohupdater.eu.exe again, then ran the program. Since then, no problem.
But apperantly the problem of crashing, after doing the solutions still occur for a few people. This is not good.
I would do a dxdiag, tell support the problem, what has been done, give the dxdiag file and let support tell you what is the problem and how to fix it. (That is what they are here for and something tells me they might be overworked)

If we also went into a holiday, then said patch to updater did not come at the right time. There will be screaming and gnashing of teeth, when those who where not here when the patch came, comes home and begin to wonder what happened.

This was how I fixed it, had a minor guff whenI re-logged later and it stuttered, fizzed, burped and whirred then loaded up, so I think the updater is now functioning?

Interesting. I checked the directory, found .exe and .prv. Deleted .prv, rand .exe. Worked fine, no problems since.

I soooooo gave up hoping NC would actually try to be a serious contender in the gaming industry. We've been complaining for FOUR YEARS that the don't know "#%"# about marketting.

And... imagine that: They haven't learned. Or is it possible they've just given up? Unfortunately I was on a 6 month sub basis so my sub STILL hasn't run out, but I gave up a long time ago and it feels rather good actually. Not wasting time on the game free's up time for a lot of other things in life.

So why am I here on the forum again then?
Well, I decided to keep going with the "I'm logged off and getting badges for doing absolutely nothing in the game" on my main until the sub runs out. Imagine what!!!

...I can't log on today and there's no information about it or the patch I just downloaded. Did that I17 so called "closed-beta" crash the hampster farm?

...and of course it's always nice to once again just pop in and say "Hi fooolks" to Wabbit & Co.

...on well, See you all in a bit or next year in that other "you know it's gonna be huge and no I'm NOT you're f'in faaather" game.

DP patch since it's going live today for pre-purchasers.

Agree with all other points about marketing needing a kick-start. The battery died a long time ago.

As I just posted in the other thread about this I fixed the updater when it happened the other day and now its happened again

From the looks of it - because of the message - it hasn't been set up for EU people because its looking for cohupdater.exe rather than cohupdater.eu.exe

*grumble grumble*

Edit - to fix it I did the same thing I did previously to, but its just annoying I had to do it manually again
