EU gets shafted - AGAIN!
I'm amazed at the number of people in this thread who have marketing experience.
C'mon, the games four years old and the UK isn't all that big. Game shops barely stock PC games anymore as it is and music CD's have dropped right off the radar too. I'm glad Cryptic isn't wasting the money on putting out a load of boxes that just aren't going to sell. Anyone here who wants a box is probably going to still hit up the Digital Download. Yes it sucks to lose the chance to own a box, but really is it that big a deal?
If people haven't heard about CoH by word of mouth yet then MMO's probably aren't their thing to begin with or they never really planned on buying it.
Now an advert on Steam or getting Penny Arcade to do a comic? That's worth a go, but don't demand they toss money away on something they've already been told is a bad idea.

You missed the point of the thread entirely. A number of us have explained the reasons behind us being annoyed and here is the reason in simplified terms.
- NA gets MA boxset
- EU doesnt but gets told we'll get the next major one [which we accept]
- NA gets GR boxset
- EU doesnt
- NA gets player number increase due to an influx of new players
- EU numbers barely increase due to a lack of "viewability"
- NA numbers continue to grow
- EU numbers continue to gradually slide

If people were complaining that we were promised a box set I'd say fair deal, I only recall it being mentioned once though. I wasn't talking to the thread as a whole anyway, so no need to be quite so defensive.
As for the rest of the points. The EU isn't NA.
You can't apply the same logic to both. We're a big group of different countries, they're a pretty freakin' huge unified one. They presumably still get a good return through game stores on PC games, while we're slowly seeing them disappear entirely.
Yes we'd get a few more players if the boxes hit the shelves here. But they're not going to do it if it just ends up wasting more money than it brings in. Deriding them for being fiscally responsible isn't helping, suggestions of how better to spend the money might!

Then what do you suggest ? We've had about 2 plus years nonstop of people suggesting server list merges to solve population situation EU side.
With zero sign or hint of a change happening for the positive, then what else can we do? Just wait for the last EU player to jump ship to the NA?
Edit: And im very defensive when it comes to the EU players/game

Advertisement that'll actually reach people?
The CoH sale on Steam went really well, I know several people who bought it by seeing it on there. Plus they hit both the NA and EU with it, so its likely well worth the money.
I don't really know all the options available to them, but joint advertisement like that serves them nicely as it lets them boost EU numbers, without feeling like they're tossing the money away on a much smaller market.

I'm not much upset about not getting the box myself but I am worried that everywhere I go I am the only one who knows what City of Heroes is while some other games with war(s) in their names are even known by my grandmother. And while a box would not necessarily mean an influx of thousands of players we have virtually no advertising at all in Europe and many potential players do go to the shop without planning ahead what to buy. (a lot of them don't but that's not the point). And Issue 17 and Ultra mode is perfect for showing of this old game with new graphics and cool new sets. Now it will be released in Europe without knowing about it and while I'm generally a positive thinker the population in Europe isn't very high and won't increase much and like Damz said, there are apparently no plans at all to do a server merge list or something else which could lead to more population.

So start telling people! I had four people in my University get into CoH through word of mouth. They've moved onto CO now, but they were here for a while at least. If we all really want numbers so bad then getting people in that way is a good a start as any.
Edit: And I said UK, because I don't really know how everyone else is doing! Just a bad habit.
The short and (not so) sweet of it is that NCSoft has refocused their attention away from the European market. The reasons behind that shift might have been good or they might have been bad, but regardless it affects us, the European players, negatively. *shrugs* C'est la vie, as they say on Vigilance.

Sure you can burn your own backup but (possibly irrationally) I trust the longevity of factory-produced discs over recordable DVD.
Even if they chose not to distribute through bricks & mortar in the EU, couldn't they even have got a box distribued through play or amazon?

Whilst all this factors in, it also would have been a darn good idea to get a new factory-created copy of installation media since I17 looks like it'll add a gig or so and I'd imagine that GR itself may add a fair chunk of graphics assets...

well after pming every red name i can get hold of when there online i have yet to hear a reply about where the eu goes from here. when will we be heard? why have we been told that there is a voice listening and jack **** to come from it? are we just going to be left and fobbed off? we just seem to inject cash that is being spent on the US! they cant even be bothered to answerback, i think give it a years time or when the shiney ness of gr and i17 fades we will be back to where we are now just left with a handfull of people
The just shy of 900mb i17 patch replaces current stuff so the total is still only 3.1gig. Just a FYI

So I'm feeling a little sheepish but we still don't know just how much GR is going to add. I'd imagine it'd be a fair amount and that that will be new assets rather than replacements for existing data... and fairly recent factory-created installation media is still nice to have even if the size doesn't change substantially.
Hmmm.. I might have just about gotten away with that oversight....

Darn - I thought it'd replace a lot when I noticed the threads saying how big the patch on test is - then completely forgot when I wrote my post.

So the disks we currently have still only have the data from issues and issues ago . . . . and would take an age to put get back on if something bad happened to your pc
Correct?

It is not so much that I personally want a red-name to clarify the situation, since I believe sifting through the many sub-sections for relevance is the representative's job, but I read somewhere the EU site is several hours, days to a point behind in news from the NA (Don't quote me on that). As well as this there is the EU updater problem which is pretty much embarrassing and simply adds oxygen to the fire. And the lack of marketing, agreeably it is not cost-effective, but the principle in not even telling us why nor even including us in the picture is appalling, a notion at minimum us subscribers should be given.
I don't want to go to the NA servers simply because I've spent 4 years EU-side, and frankly it's disgraceful if I'm forced to go there. Albeit the population is in decline, it's hardly credible to blame it on EU lacking interest in the game when gradually EU has been reduced to but a few pieces of hardware. Again, this is not full on their fault however a bit more careful handling would have calmed us down. At the moment if this inertia the developers have of offering bewildering blindness to us continues, we will be forced unto the NA servers - transferring being unlikely.
I've seen this house burn down too frequently to bother too much about it anymore, I amongst others wouldn't be surprised if the EU was shut-down and restarting all over again on NA is the best option.

i do think its a way for us to go over to the us serves without them lifting a finger, but many of us have long term vets, sgs and friends they jsut dont wonna do a list merge cuz they will have to do work. oh and EU we have no x2 xp yet either but was stated that it would be 8.59am? but yeah shafted yet again today will be only day i get to play and it isnt even here!

He demands that revenge is taken on these miscreants and his powers are returned! You look like just the villain for the job. Challenging.
You were shafted by the miscommunication of time, we will be getting the Double XP Weekend, but at the appropriate time. If you'll look at the time it states the start of the Double XP Weekend at 8.59AM Pacific Time, then 8.59AM GMT time. That is obviously incorrect. I'm not sure exactly what the time difference is between GMT and Pacific, but I'd estimate it's about 5 hours. So you're looking at about a 2PM start.
|
So 5pm then.
On the plus side we'll have it longer Sunday Night / Monday (assuming they do the usual and 'forget' to turn it off until Monday morning their time)
It's 8 hours isn't it? 5 between here and the East Coast (New York), 8 between here and the West Coast.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa this looks familiar.
I can understand, that for some of the enthusiasts among us, no physical possession of an addition to their favourite game - in contrast to stock NA-side - can be quite agitating. However looking at the whole spectrum they are probably running some sort of risk-management, I doubt the release of 'Going Rogue' would generate numbers suffice to say that it was appropriate to do so. A digital 'copy' reduces the potential financial failure of release on this side significantly, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the server to download it from is based in NA, hence I think it's probably a risk-management conclusion. I'm afraid we have to be a little brutal in honesty, our numbers are dwindling however slowly but surely, so there is no surprise but I do agree with concerns posted above.
I do understand that the principle behind this is entirely wrong, there has been no correspondence and explanation nor reasoning for this, which would in my opinion would be enough to warrant us to back off. Fair enough Avatea has, with all due respect, baited us to fend off our rants for a while, it's not the same. I'm not requesting a direct correspondence or an immediate response, however I welcome it, but I honestly can not remember the last time we were bothered about.
The sheer ignorance we are being awarded is frankly beyond insulting. Both parties, I am a EU-user, know this has been going on for further than it should and unfortunately I think we know where it's heading. Several fellow subscribers and I have discussed the situation, and sadly we all seem to at least conclude that it's inevitable were going sometime, not any time soon clearly nor within this year but D00m is unavoidable. Since I'm discussing slightly off-topic I'll stop at that. The fantastic thing is, I'm not being bitter just extremely disappointed and agitated.
Back to the author's point, I suppose the fact we didn't get the 'Mission Architect Box' either, someone clarify please I can't remember, should have been a forewarning on what else was to come.
P.S Anyone who complains of us being victimized can go "P1ss off". I'm fed up of that already.
Also, I've had to FIX my updater literally more than 7 times in the past 3 days. Good ol' EU treatment.
