That's right, we here at the City of Heroes/Villains community welcomes everyone who has a Mac to come try out the wonderfull game we PC Users have been playing for the past five years.

Yep. All ten of you.

Me and my 9 friends have been playing COH exclusively on Macs since early 2006 when Intel powered Macs were introduced that could dual boot Windows. This just means I don't have to reboot into Windows to play anymore.

Liquid, you have the most bizarre sense of humor that I have ever read in the forums. There are times when I do not know if you are serious, or just out to the "leg pulling".

But, the amount of Mac people that have been running Parallels, Boot Camp, Mac OS 10.5, or others would probably count more than 10.

Seriously, with the other MMO that can not be mentioned having a Mac client, it just made business sense to open it to another platform.

Besides, when running a Mac client, we do not worry about IE 7 and it's vulnerabilities because Mac does respect your browser choice, unlike the "other" side.

Besides, the colors are cooler.

Come to the Mac side Liquid, you will not regret it.

So, what's needed to get into the Open Beta? I've got a Mac based friend who's been dying to play CoH since launch and peaked his interest when he learned the game was being ported. Can I send him the client link and let him try it out or does he need a Windows account to login to the beta?

[/ QUOTE ]

He/she needs a current authentication method to any of the clients.

Meaning: an account.

Sign him/her up for the trial (get the goodies from it) and let him/her create a character on test. It may take 24-48 hours for the trial account to carry over to test, but it is a free trial. Free trial restictions apply.

Or, be a bud, and have him/her get the test client, you sign in on test on his/her Mac with your account (EULA restrictions, you use your account to show him/her the game, don't give him/her your account/password).

With Closed and Open beta timelines, I fully expect the full Mac Client to be available end of year, beginning of next.

That's about it, except for the 3rd step: Double-click the City of Heroes application and wait for it to patch up to date.

VidiotMaps/Badge-Hunter is ready to support the Macintosh with MapPack and Bindfile...

We are just waiting on some minor 'approval' to ensure that modifying the Mac Client does not break the EULA or Contract with TransGaming.

HeroStats does not work in the Mac envrionment, as it uses Windows .Net programming.

I (personally) do not know if Titan is going to cover the Mac

Hmm, I wonder if it might be possible to get HeroStats working with Mono? Mono is an open-source re-implementation of the .Net runtime for Unix-like platforms (including OS X). The main development is being managed by Novell. I think the .Net API's might be somewhat limited right now for Mono, though, so not reallly sure if you could get HeroStats working, but might be worth a check?

I wasn't sure a Trial Account had access to test to be honest. If it does, that works great

Interesting, that might work for my Demo Launcher program, too. I wouldn't bet on CoH Helper working very well, though.

Now if we could get Mids running... someone said something along the lines of "Mids wouldn't be opposed to making a Mac version, but he doesn't have a Mac to build/test it on."

Wish i would have known this was coming when I bought a new computer two months ago, I was considering a mac.

The fact that there was no Mac version of this game was a factor in my decision. (Ultimately im not sure it would have changed it, but it would have been nice to know.)

On the other hand, Welcome Mac users! Find me on virtue we can run some TFs together!

Technically, I've been playing CoX on my Mac since before there even was an announcement of a Mac client. Bootcamp is a wondrous thing.

Oh and averaging +60fps (higher with v-sync turned off) @ 1920x1200 (with all the bells and whistles turned on... even in Grandville) is nothing to sneeze at.

Hey Mac Players!

The Mac version of City of Heroes is now in Open Beta. This means that the Mac clients can only access the Training Room, and we have lifted all the restrictions for PC users who can also access to the Training Room. You will start to see a lot of new faces as more and more Mac players come in for their first taste of City of Heroes.

If you are one of those new faces, I would like to say “welcome!” I was very excited when our partner TransGaming showed us what they could do to get City of Heroes running on the Mac, and immediately wanted to get this into the hands of Mac players as soon as possible. Of course, we also want to make sure we have worked out as many of the kinks and bugs in the Mac client as possible, and unfortunately that has caused us to push the full release of the Mac version of City of Heroes to January, 2009. We are very confident that by that time we will be able to offer you the best in super-powered massively multiplayer gaming for the Mac.

Once again, welcome to the new players, and I hope you enjoy our game and our player community!

Excellent news Posi, it's always great to se new players and to open CoH up to a whole new group of people who couldn't play before is fantastic.

One sad thing is that the game isn't available before Christmas as I'm sure that many Mac owners would have been gifted CoH. Is there anyway that someone could buy a gift voucher or something like that to still allow the game to be given to Mac owners this Chrimbo?

Even if it was a "Here is your access key to City of Heroes, the new world awaits you in early January" kind of deal, I'm sure that it would still shift a few extra copies.

Still great news though and thanks for continuing to invest in a game that I still love after four years. With new innovations like this I can still love playing it in another 4 years!

Just imagining what new things will be added by then is exciting. I can't believe how much new content has been added when I look at the "Issues page" as it seems that a lot of what we have in game has always been there.

Cheers

I have a reallu dumb question, so I'll proceed to put on my flame suit now. I've never used any betas or training room. Been running CoX on my Mac though. With us MAC users using open beta in the training room, will any progress be transferred or saved? I assume not, but just so I am clear.

The Open Beta is on the real Training Room not like the separate test server used during the Closed Beta. As such, you can reasonably expect for anything you do on test to be kept on test for a fairly long time. I've got characters on test from back in i4 who I haven't touched since. However if you mean progress earned on test transferring to live, well that simply isn't going to happen.

Too many alts to list.
