Big hint for those who want a windowed mode...like Spore and other Transgaming-converted apps, you can press command-return and have it go from full-screen mode to windowed. You have to do it every time you launch (it doesn't remember that you preferred windowed mode) but it is available.

When does it stop pointing to the Training Room and start pointing to live??

[/ QUOTE ]

It doesn't.

Unlike the PC side, where you can alias the Updater and add "-test", the Mac Client App has information within it's contents to point to which server farm.

Not to worry.

There will be a "Test" Mac Client (which is the one you are downloading now) and a "Live" Client which points to the live servers.

"But now I have to have two installations of the client!" You moan.

Uh...you have two on the PC side also.

Please tell me there is a faster way to download the files. i have the app installed but it is downloading the files at 98 K/sec. this is going to take all night at this rate. on a 300K/sec DSL.

[/ QUOTE ]

Nope, sorry.

Their server is throttled.

All sorts of people are grabbing the stuff.

Same thing happened when I13 went live.

If you happen to have a Mac which you've been Bootcamping to run COH, you should be able to cheat a bit on the size of the download.

First you download the Mac client from the site above. Don't run it yet, just put it in your applications folder. Then right (or ctrl) click it and show package contents.
Drill down to :
contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/coh/

Then go onto your Bootcamp partition and go into:
/Programs/City of Heroes
There will be a folder called piggs
This folder contains most of the bulky downloaded stuff such as graphics and sounds.

If you copy this file across from the partition to the Mac application location indicated above, it should speed up the launch appreciably as you will be spared downloading 2.7 GB of stuff.

This is not quite correct. The Mac version takes the same -test parameter that the Windows version does. I'll refrain from telling everyone exactly where it can be found as I don't want to upset the mighty Ghost Falcon *grins*

I'll say two things on the subject right away: 1. It's very easy to convert the Training Room client to a Live client. 2. DON'T try it right now - it won't do you any good (the Live patch server isn't ready to take Mac clients yet), and if you don't do it right, your prefs will be screwed up and you'll have to reinstall the Training Room client.

As for part (1), when Posi officially announces the Mac live client I may post detailed instructions for converting the Training Room client to Live for anyone who has difficulty downloading/installing the final release, provided it's not significantly different and provided the devs don't ask me not to.

I don't think you need any code. Just use your current account and password, your freebies are keyed to that account. You don't need to buy the client or pay extra money at all, just download it for the Mac and you're ready to go.

You might want to buy the client anyway (faster than download). Just use your current account name and password and all your stuff will still be there.

i'm of the opinion that it kinda sucks that mac players are getting a sweet power and costume set, and those of us that have been playing on pc for years now are getting a swift kick in the teeth . i want a valkyrie!

And mind you: us Apple lovers have to PAY for it just the same by buying the game (or if - like me - you're subscribed already you have the option to wait for the valkyrie pack for a few bucks).

Great news, Posi!

Now, the inevitable question: given that TransGaming got its start by forking the WINE code base into WineX for games, which later evolved into the Cedega cross-platform gaming tool, how long until we see a native Linux client for CoX?

Yes, stop the download and transfer the files as I indicated. One of the functions of the installer is to correct errors against a checksum so the program runs right. Even if you interrupt the installation, it will fix itself.

I downloaded the client last night and was getting over 500k/sec on my cable modem. Yay! So nice not to have to boot in Windows to play.

strange....i tried just that and it didn't work....the pigg files are in the directory but the updater still downloads them. I had updated to I13, not sure why it is redownloading...the piggs appear as documents instead of "unix executable files" and i tried using a perl script i googled to find to remove some information, but no such luck

not a big deal, i guess, i can wait for the download

Posted

Odd, don't know what to tell you. At the very least those piggs files will be transferable to the live version once the beta is over so you can spare download time then.

You can buy the same Mac client and just use the code to get the goodies.

Or, wait for the store to offer them separately.

The Mac Client and the PC Client are using the same servers. So if you are on a PC, buy the Mac Client and get the code, and impress your friends.

I downloaded the game client for the open mac beta and I reactivated my old account so that I could play again finally but every time I try to log on it says that my playtime for this account has expired. Am I missing something extra I must do to get my account to play the mac client?

Remove CoH.checksum

[/ QUOTE ]

for those who are trying to do this, this was what had to be done, thanks for the tip!

So, if you've started the download and then find this thread, copy the piggs over then remove the coh.checksum file, restart the upgrader and you'll be all set

Just played an hour of villains and it works shockingly well, what a good job done! I reactivated for this

My brother and I did the same thing and had the same problem last night. But I got up this morning and was able to get on fine. You just need to give them time to get you reactivated, or that's my analysis of what happened.
