1. Your post shows me just how special Paragon studios is. The game didn't just allow some of us to live the lives of superheroes and villains, it also changed some of our real lives a great deal.

The fact that you were hired because of your input into the game as a player is an amazing thing. Something that would be a fairy tale, life changing experience for a gamer.

Although I was going to say that I am surprised that you got your career in such an amazing way, after thinking about it I've realised that this is just the kind of thing that I would expect of the wonderful people who brought us this fantastic game and wonderful community.

Thanks for sharing, it has lifted my spirits!

Doctor Aeon here. I was thinking about posting something here for a while that would amount to a farewell letter. Seeing War Witch send hers got my rear in gear to send mine! But this won't be the last you hear from me - I'd like to continue posting fun stories from inside the studio, as well as videos of some of the cool things I enjoyed from the past. I also apologize for any typos in this post, but I'm sure you're all used to that from me by now.

Before I came to Paragon Studios, I was working at a position equivalent to customer service in a Pilates studio. I hated it. I had recently graduated from college with a degree in English and was living with my very supportive and loving parents. I wanted to write, and I loved video games. My life, however, was good and positive; I had great friends and a great family, and I knew life was good.

One day, my father had a heart attack. My sister and mother needed help taking care of him afterwards, so I decided to quit Pilates and help take care of my dad. I'd stay with him in the hospital during his visits and help take care of him at home.

During that time, I needed something to do to keep my writing skills up; I barely wrote anything when I was at Pilates, and I needed to keep my skills polished. That was when Mission Architect went into beta for City of Heroes. I decided that I would set myself up on a schedule - I would write a new story arc every week, publishing them on Sunday nights.

I would talk to my friends and family about the stories I wrote, and I was extremely proud of all of them. I read many books during this time, including one from my favorite author/philosopher, Luigi Giussani. Many of these ideas went into the stories I wrote. I would think of what to write while waiting for my father to come out from his appointments with various doctors or while he was sleeping.

One day, I received a message from Synapse - send me your resume, we want to look into hiring you. I was so excited, but I couldn't just leave my father. However, as destiny would have it, my father was getting better. This was the exact right time for me to be able to leave - in fact, my parents insisted that they would hate me forever if I didn't take this opportunity.

I sent in the resume and after the normal process of interviews etc., I had been accepted to work at Paragon Studios. I would be moving away from the comforts of New York and going to live on my own for the first time in California. I was terrified and excited at the same time (terrixcited).

It has been an extremely amazing experience working with everyone at Paragon. It would be impossible to put all the great experiences I've had into words, and this post is already long enough as it is. It's because Paragon was willing to take a chance on some kid from Brooklyn that I have everything that I do today; amazing friends in the Bay Area and in Paragon studios, and a loving fiancee who I met in California and who I will be getting married to at the end of April.

I don't know where I'll be going from here, but I will always know that Paragon studios was the method through which so many amazing things came into my life. A lot of us are sad now, but it's like Gandalf (NERD ALERT!) said in Lord of the Rings: "I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil." Amazing friendships were developed in Paragon, friendships that will last for the rest of our lives, both with the people we worked with and with the players.

It has been an absolute pleasure making stories for you guys, and I've always tried to be better and better at them. If there's one thing I want my stories to show, it's this: life can be positive, even if it looks like everything is negative. That's what I learned through my life and through great books such as Lord of the Rings. The story of Dark Astoria, which I'm most proud of, is the best representation of that belief.

We all may be scattered, but our friendships will remain, as well as the beliefs and philosophies we put into making games. Wherever we go, I, and I'm sure everyone that worked at Paragon, will work with those same values to bring people amazing games that can help change their lives.

Thank you guys

Hi,

I just wanted to say thanks to you all for posting the kind comments.

Today is my last day as my subs run monthly from the 5th.

Hopefully I will see you all again some day

Thank you guys

Thanks everyone for the support and kind words

I do hope that I can come back at some point. I'd love to see how GR pans out.

Thank you guys

Hi everyone, this is going to be a long boring post, just to let you know before you commit yourself to reading it but I couldn't go without saying a few things.

I just wanted to say thank you and wish you all the best for the future, as I have sadly had to cancel my subscription to CoH. I'm not here to say that I'm leaving because I don't like the newest updates, or changes in gameplay and I'm definintely not here to give all my "stuff" to people 'cos I'm leaving. I've loved nearly all the developments that we've had since launch. Except of course for the changes to enhancements but I got used to that. Even after all the moaning I did about it at the time, I can now see why it changed.

Over the years since I first saw news about CoH being in development, through watching it grow into a massive experience, I have met and played alongside a few of you.

I was even lucky enough to get Brandon McKinney to agree to do some custom artwork of my main character, English Rose. He was inundated with requests from other CoH fans after she was published and as a thank you to me he did another commision piece. He even put ER in the very last panel of issue 12, as a thank you too. She was in the background flying. That was also the same issue that I was lucky enough to get her artwork published in the fan art section, so she appeared three times in one issue!!! (The third time was an ad for the fan art page)

After that I began collecting the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection. I always felt that English Rose and her friends were missing from my display of superheroes and a friend made three of my main characters into figurines, so that they could stand alongside the Xmen and the Avengers. As I'm typing this I can see ER standing next to African Violet and Japanese Lily. Not only do I have the fond memories of CoH, I also have physical reminders too

The sad news is that due to my health deteriorating so much, I was dismissed from my job. I'm very unlikely to be able to hold down another one, so I've had to cancel CoH. I really don't want to leave, as I've seen so many wonderful developments over the years and I can only begin to imagine what other great things lie in the future of CoH. Getting through Christmas is going to be tough financially, so even the low subs we pay are out of reach for me now.

This isn't meant as a sob story but I thought it best to be honest and I couldn't leave without saying "bye". If I didn't tell the truth, then it may have come across that I left because I grew bored of the game, or something similar.

I never got around to saving the air fare to attend any of the meet ups you had in the States, and I truly feel sad about that. Although there are UK players, I stood fast when the Euro servers went live, so I could keep playing along with my mates in the US.

I'm really sorry about the length of this post but I just want you guys to know that it is with a heavy heart that I have to say goodbye.

Before CoH, I used to buy one or two games a month, but since it launched over 5 years ago, I've bought hardly any. I grew up in the UK when getting hold of comics was pretty difficult. Getting super hero toys was even tougher, and I had to resort to making my own out of pipe cleaners It wasn't because we were poor, it was because superheroes weren't as popular where I grew up and finding them anyway was hard work. I was even taught to read by Reed Richards and co. (No jokes about poor spelling or grammar please )

Then nearly 40 years later, I live in a world were we get many superhero graphic novels, films and even a game where I could actually "BE" a superhero myself

We all have our obsessions and superheroes have been mine for as long as I can remember.

I just wish that when CoH/V launched that they had had a lifetime membership option, then this day would not have had to happen until the day (in the distant future) that the servers were shut down.

So thanks to the developers, artists, forum staff and last but not least, the players for all the fun since beta.

Nick
5. Here's an update on English Rose's mates.

http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/y...t/africanv.jpg

A new figurine that someone has made for me. She's only about 2 inches tall and looks better in real life then in a photo. I added the address because I couldn't see how to post a link on here. Her name is African Violet and is one of the 3 characters that was on my Brandon McKinney artwork from a couple of years back.
6. I remember trying to play two of these games. I think that I kept drowning the Fantastic Four or got them stuck in a pit (or something like it) at the beginning of the game and NEVER got any further

Same with the Hobbit. I got as far as a cave on the mountain before the blood on the monitor from me banging my head against it made it impossible to go any further

I like the 60 month reward but not to happy with the 57 month one. My main character has 50 free icon tokens already. OK I can benefit a with new characters but due to all the free tokens that get given out it isn't that much of an issue getting a new costume.

There is also the new day job of fashion designer that gives you a discount already. Sorry to sound ungrateful but for 57 months I don't think the reward is that great. Maybe a 6th costume slot or a unique costume item or aura would have been nicer (for me anyway)

Mac Open Beta

[ QUOTE ]
Hey Mac Players!

The Mac version of City of Heroes is now in Open Beta. This means that the Mac clients can only access the Training Room, and we have lifted all the restrictions for PC users who can also access to the Training Room. You will start to see a lot of new faces as more and more Mac players come in for their first taste of City of Heroes.

If you are one of those new faces, I would like to say “welcome!” I was very excited when our partner TransGaming showed us what they could do to get City of Heroes running on the Mac, and immediately wanted to get this into the hands of Mac players as soon as possible. Of course, we also want to make sure we have worked out as many of the kinks and bugs in the Mac client as possible, and unfortunately that has caused us to push the full release of the Mac version of City of Heroes to January, 2009. We are very confident that by that time we will be able to offer you the best in super-powered massively multiplayer gaming for the Mac.

Once again, welcome to the new players, and I hope you enjoy our game and our player community!

Excellent news Posi, it's always great to se new players and to open CoH up to a whole new group of people who couldn't play before is fantastic.

One sad thing is that the game isn't available before Christmas as I'm sure that many Mac owners would have been gifted CoH. Is there anyway that someone could buy a gift voucher or something like that to still allow the game to be given to Mac owners this Chrimbo?

Even if it was a "Here is your access key to City of Heroes, the new world awaits you in early January" kind of deal, I'm sure that it would still shift a few extra copies.

Still great news though and thanks for continuing to invest in a game that I still love after four years. With new innovations like this I can still love playing it in another 4 years!

Just imagining what new things will be added by then is exciting. I can't believe how much new content has been added when I look at the "Issues page" as it seems that a lot of what we have in game has always been there.

Cheers

11. Here is my custom figure that my mate has made for me. I collect the Marvel and DC figures and have over a 100 now. All the ones I own so far are the official characters that have been in the comics.

Because Brandon McKinney did a wonderful artwork/custom for me AND English Rose was in the last panel of the comic he drew for CoH, she felt even more "real" to me.

Now I can add English Rose to my Avengers, Xmen or Marvel Knights line up When my DC collection gets bigger I might add her to the JLA.

I know it might seem silly to other people but other super hero fans or CoH players should understand better then the less enlightened

He has already agreed to make more for me in the future, so I can also add African Violet and Japanese Lily to the Marvel U. In future if I get one or two a year, I could even have ALL of ER and her friends grouped together.
12. I'd like the stories of the heroes named on the plaques we hunt around to get the history badges.

Galaxy Girl and Atlas for starters!

Maybe being able to fight alongside some of the heroes we've only seen as statues so far. (Maybe a misson added for "each" of the big statues dotted around Paragon?)

If they're important enough to have parts of Paragon City named after them then they need to have their arcs made
13. Hi guys,

Can you give us some help with a bind?

I want to change costume then activate a power and say somehting on local

Example

Press "f" which makes my character change into costume slot 2 which has a fire aura on it, I take off in flight and say "Flame on!"

That's not what I want to do exactly but it gives you an idea of what I'm aiming to do. I just want to be wearing the same costume each time I fly with the F key. This should be doable but I don't know the change costume commands.

Cheers for any advice you can give.

/bind f "???????$$local Flame On!$$powexec_name flight"

I think it's only the ???????? bit I need to learn.
14. I just love the new ideas, thank you for your continued imaginations and for developing mine

One question regarding the new VEATS and use of costume pieces from Arachnos. Do we get to make costumes identical to Arachnos uniforms if we wanted?

The main costume I really really want and have wanted since they arrived in game are the silvery/gray Fortunata's costumes. But will we have bum capes ? (Or butt capes in US English )

And finally, you know the "Exclusive" Arachnos capes we got for the DVD edition of CoV ( I think it came with that). Well I think they should "stay" exclusive. It is my opinion though and I'm very sure others will disagree but the exclusives we got for pre-orders are now universal. Some of us like having extras because we supported the game more.

I realise it was my choice to buy the extra packs/DVDs and add ons but I think that certain exclusives should stay that way.

I also believe that Vet rewards shouldn't be purchasable. I know that opinion won't be supported by a number of people but I waited 4 years to get mine.

There are plenty of costume options and power options to make your characters unique and if one of the Vet rewards enables you to make a character that you really want to make, then wait till you've played long enough to get that reward. They are there as a reward for time playing as well as amount paid to play that long. Taking out the "time" element, cheapens the value of the rewards benefits.

But I suppose that if bum capes were a year away or longer for me, that I'd not be too happy about it BUT if it was important enough for me, it'd encourage me to play long enough to get them.

And THANKS again for all the great stuff you're giving us in the new issue. A 4 year old game that still feels this fresh to play, is amazing

It also comes across in all the Devs posts just how proud you are to work on this game. If I was younger I'd learn how to programme or draw just so that I could aim to work for CoX, as it sounds like a great place to work. Now I know 39 ain't too old to start a new career but I wouldn't be offered a green card by the time I got a degree as I'd be too old (Plus I'm disabled, which is a big no no for immigration)

[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, I had this question last night.

If any red names are still reading this, is the plan to still stick with three issues this year? Or will we see fewer formal "Issues" and more "in-betweeners"?

Things are looking good so far, but it would be nice to know the general release plan for 2008 for the Issue Roadmap.

[/ QUOTE ]

There's definitely more coming in 2008! But, as we started off saying, we're not quite ready to reveal those larger initiatives. So, for now, we stuck with highlighting what is coming in the shorter term.

16. An excellent idea and I hope you raise LOADS.

Is there any chance that some of the awesome stuff you have like Lord Recluse statues etc.. could ever be raffled in future? For those of us who would like to support the charity but can't run to hundreds of $$$, it'd give us poorer guys a chance of owning great stuff and I'm sure that loads and loads of us would buy a ticket or two.

Might even raise more then an auction.

20. SPOILER

I really love the way the story fits in with the CoX universe but why are the bad guys alway British? lol
21. English_Rose_NA

"Moral Combat"

In my opinion this argument is being put forward by people who know nothing about the genre of gaming. Of course there are games which even I as a liberal minded person find a little too near the mark as far as bad taste goes but CoH is one of the most gentle games aimed at all ages that I can think of.

OK so we do "arrest" bad guys but it's in a comic book style, we're hardly driving around in stolen cars, killing cops and [censored] prostitutes in the rear seat.

I'm all for responsible attitudes in EVERY aspect of the multi-media world we live in today but gaming seems to be singled out more and more.

I'd like to see parents being more responsible for their children and for those who complain about society to stop using TV or computers and consoles as a baby sitting subsitute. If they want to be in control of what their kids do, then maybe if their child is not trust-worthy enough not to buy games that are too old for them or watch TV that is too mature for them or even downloading porn, then these parents need to be monitoring their kids more.

If this means that if a kid isn't trusted not to buy a game that is too violent for them then the parent needs to be in control of that child's pocket money.

In my opinion the TRUE cause of most of today's violence and crime amongst younger people is not what media they watch or take part in but the fact that comercialism is so great today.

By this I mean there are crimes of theft and robberies from other youngsters because one of them has something the other one doesn't. Many children nowadays have personal property which runs into hundreds, if not thousands of pounds (or dollars) and there will always be those who have less. This in my opinion causes jealousy and greed. Those without these expensive things will be tempted to take, steal or bully off of those kids who have the expensive items.

When most of my generation were in their early teens or younger, the most expensive personal property that many of us had was a bike. And remember how less we heard of violent crimes amongst youngsters when the everyday stuff they had was not expensive things like iPods, computers and PSPs etc...?

Remember all those crimes of theft (many were also violent) when trainers became a status symbol for the first time and were hundreds of pounds (dollars)? Kids were coming home bare foot because many were stolen off of their feet.

Another point to remember is that whenever a new type of media is developed, there are people who cry out that this new thing will be the cause of trouble or crime or violence. Before games it was computers and before that it was videos/dvds and before that it was TV. When radio was first developed it had the same things said against it and believe it or not, way back when books were first made available to all, there were many people who said that they would cause the public to be more dangerous and violent.

All through history the same arguments get repeated each time a new thing is made available to the public and usually it turns out that the doomsayers were wrong.

I'm sorry for not being succinct and letting my arguments go off in loads of directions but that is partly because the causes of todays violence is also caused by MULTIPLE factors and not just 1 or 2. Society is many faceted and so are its problems.

Of course we do need producers of media to be responsibe for what they produce but at the same time we need consuumers to be responsible for the media they buy too. If a person is too young to be able to make that informed decision then their parents need to make the decision for them. I'm fed up of being limited in what I may and may not do because of other members of society not taking their responsiblities seriously enough. If you have children in todays World then you need to know what they are doing 24 hours a day, sorry about that but that's what you signed up for when you decided to have a family.

I'm not attaking all parents because there are many parents who do take part in the children's upbringing but there are many who seem to think that society is responsible for their child's behaviour.

Violence is abhorent and I detest it but we need to remember that if someone does a bad thing it must of been in them to do that. A good person would not be driven to kill or be violent under ANY circumstances even if they played a game with a violent element to it or watched a horror movie.

It kind of scares me sometimes because I can see a kind of witchhunt happening in the media industry which could result in inappropriate censorship of games and films/TV.

I wouldn't allow my child to play out if I didn't know who they were with or the kind of person they were with, the same rule applies with anything that takes place in the outside World. The internet is the OUTSIDE World and because of that I want to know what my child uses the net for and if it's appropriate for them.

And please don't take this as an attack on all parents, it isn't. I know it's a tough job but it's also a joyous one and many of you do a great job but you have to suffer for those parents who don't attempt to raise their children properly. Those badly raised kids interact with our kids and pass on their influences, it's our job to give our childrent the knowledge and strength to make the right decisions with the skills WE give them.

Rant over
22. Not sure if this has been reported but here goes. A few times since i8 I have changed zones and there has been no NPCs, cars/trucks or mobs in the new zone.

The first time this happened it was in Faultline and I could see other players with no problem. I tried to exit the zone via the tunnel and I just walked right into it and 1/2 way along it without exiting. I chatted with other players and they could still exit.

I had to log of and on to get out of it. This has happened 4 times now with different toons, with different powers/levels/zones and animations

I was unable to collect badges or do anything in the zone except move around freely.

It has happened a couple of times after exiting a mish too, not just zoning.

I like Flight, simply because it is the lowest Maintenance. Click the toggle, press auto-run and go AFK for a few minutes or chat with my SG.

I like Super Jump because of its combination of speed and vertical movement. It's also handy in PvP. It's a maintenance power, though. It's difficult to chat when you constantly hold down the spacebar. (Yeah, I know...remap the key!)

I like Teleport due to it's speed and PvP benefits. It takes a lot of getting used to, though.

I like Superspeed mainly due to speed. I typically take it in combination with another travel power, though.

[/ QUOTE ]

I use a five button mouse for CoH and I got a zboard too (Yeah I'm spoilt but I aint bought any other games since CoH came out & I was getting 1 or 2 a month before then ).

I always put my travel power on the keyboard button 6 and sprint (or prestige sprint) on button 9. I then goto the options menu and use the run button on my keyboard for sprint and button 6 is just the right place for a quick fly/leap/teleport etc..

Using the 5 button mouse is the best tho, I use the side buttons for jump (or fly up) and down (fly down) and it just feels so natural now. I highly reccomend getting a mouse with those handy extra 2 buttons on the side, it makes travelling just so nice

I won't go into how I set up my Kheldians because just trying to remember the binds and how I set the keys up makes my head hurt but it does work brilliantly with the zBoard and 5 button mouse.
24. Maybe not a biggie to worry about and more a QoL bug but when I have the prestige sprint power on, only the classic cape without any thrills works with it.

If I have it on and have a nice and sassy cape on then the graphics dont mesh with it and it is as if the cape is seperate from the rest of my toons body. The body has all the glitzy glow but not the cape.

The plain cape with only one colour on it has the benefit of all the glitz though.

Oh is there any news on whether toons with long hair will have it move like Ghost Widow's does? You know what I mean, not individual strands but her hair moves as if it is a cape but attached to her head. It's just that it'd be really nice to be able to have toons with long hair and capes. At the moment if they have long hair it sticks to the body and goes through the cape

Yeah I know it aint gonna kill me but it bothers me
