Mac Open Beta
Excellent news!
*runs out to buy a Mac*
pohsyb: so of all people you must be most excited about the veats
Arachnos Commander: actually, I am
pohsyb: I mean you kinda were one already anyways ^_^
Arachnos Commander:
Sounds like you all have been working hard on the Mac client. Looking forward to see how this plays out
I have many friends who only play certain Other Games. They have been hearing about this game from myself and other friends for years, but as Mac users, their hands have been tied.
I look forward to seeing them here!

Great news, Posi!
Now, the inevitable question: given that TransGaming got its start by forking the WINE code base into WineX for games, which later evolved into the Cedega cross-platform gaming tool, how long until we see a native Linux client for CoX?

That's right, we here at the City of Heroes/Villains community welcomes everyone who has a Mac to come try out the wonderfull game we PC Users have been playing for the past five years.
Yep. All ten of you.
I'm happy to see that this is finally ready for the public. Now for the inevitable question... I am one of those people for who the updater never seems to work right. Under windows it hangs at 'Connecting...', counting through 30 or 40 attempts before it finally finds the server - if it ever finds the server at all. Unfortunately, it's doing the exact same thing here on my mac (#27 and counting...). On the windows side, I get around this in 2 ways: having a version of the shortcut with the '-project coh' flag to bypass the updater for general play, and opening 361764761276347 copies of the updater in hopes that one actually connects whenever I need to download an update. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be allowed to open multiple copies of the updater on my mac, which means that even if I leave it on all night there's no guarantee that it'll ever connect (if it follows the same pattern as my windows machine). Does anyone know of any workarounds for this on the mac version? (Oh, how I wish I could just download patches manually...) If there's no way to work around this, I may have to give up the idea of playing on my mac, which would make me very sad.

hum.. this question should normally be in the tech section but I see why you'd post it here so i'll be brief and try to answer: Are you behind a firewall ( software or hardware) if so you should start by looking there.
As for the mac beta i'm very happy about it, even if i'm a pc user I have a couple of friends who left for school with only a MAC and can't play because of this. I'll be more than happy to see them online more often between partys, and beer.... errr I mean studying and sleep and homework.. yeah that what I meant.
I second the question as to when CoX may be ported to Linux. At the moment, that's the only thing that's really keeping me tied to Windows.
And now the Mac Guy and the PC Guy can play CoX together!

Works great with bone-stock Wine 1.1.10 on 64-bit or 32-bit Gentoo. Needs a minor registry patch 'inside' Wine to stop the 'your video card drivers are outdated' alert the updater and game have on-screen, but that's all. Everything works like a charm with that in place.
Technical specifics:
<ul type="square">[*]City of Heroes itself is OpenGL so it's quite trivial to translate the graphics calls under Linux already.[*]The game checks for OpenGL capabilities strings with either a fixed-size buffer that's far too small for the MASSIVE string it gets back from Linux, or it's doing an order-dependant search for the first of X strings to decide what the video card is capable of, instead of searching for the specific capabilities it's actually needs before claiming your video-card is out of date.[*]The one 'gotcha' is that the chat window takes a double-tap of enter or forward-slash to activate, and a double-tap of escape to get out of, that's the only problem I've run into.[/list]
But yeah, aside from the keyboard-glitch I have City of Heroes running with all the fixing on my NVidia Quadro FX570 (8600/8800 equivilant) on my laptop, runs great and smoothly. It's nice having all the PIGG files loaded in RAM.
My understanding of briefly looking at the original announcement is that this requires a pretty new Mac, so be sure you have your friends check the requirements.

Cool! So this means you're now working on the Amiga version, right?
Right???
That's ok, I can wait...

Rest assured there is a possible workaround (I haven't tested it yet though). Unfortunately, I'm not going to release it publicly during the Open Beta as troubleshooting the patch server is part of it. Don't want the Live patch server to crash on release day because half the Mac testers were bypassing it.

Hey all -
I have had a MAC for awhile now but I have never quite gotten the hang of installing programs. Let me know if I have this right or wrong.
Double-click the .dmg file from the desktop
Drag icon to the applications folder
Is this right or is it done a different way for CoX.
Thanks.

That's about it, except for the 3rd step: Double-click the City of Heroes application and wait for it to patch up to date.

Cool thx. I saw when it had finished downloading it had already opened the drag to app screen.
Thanks.

So, what's needed to get into the Open Beta? I've got a Mac based friend who's been dying to play CoH since launch and peaked his interest when he learned the game was being ported. Can I send him the client link and let him try it out or does he need a Windows account to login to the beta?
Yay macs. <3 MBP.
Hey Mac Players!
The Mac version of City of Heroes is now in Open Beta. This means that the Mac clients can only access the Training Room, and we have lifted all the restrictions for PC users who can also access to the Training Room. You will start to see a lot of new faces as more and more Mac players come in for their first taste of City of Heroes.
If you are one of those new faces, I would like to say welcome! I was very excited when our partner TransGaming showed us what they could do to get City of Heroes running on the Mac, and immediately wanted to get this into the hands of Mac players as soon as possible. Of course, we also want to make sure we have worked out as many of the kinks and bugs in the Mac client as possible, and unfortunately that has caused us to push the full release of the Mac version of City of Heroes to January, 2009. We are very confident that by that time we will be able to offer you the best in super-powered massively multiplayer gaming for the Mac.
Once again, welcome to the new players, and I hope you enjoy our game and our player community!
