Confessions

Had a thread in Victory for confessions but I figured I should post it here, as it was a global thing.

Remember back in the day when we could add Tags to forum posts and there was a tag cloud on the bottom of every screen? And remember how "Tunnels Snakes Rule" was always the number one tag?

That was me.

I guess I'll own up to somethings I used to do.

Before we had the option to see other's global names outside of global channels, somedays I would get bored and create a random character on another server, and troll every person who would walk by.

I did this to a friend on my home server. I'm hoping he sees this thread, so when he calls, I'll know why.

Before the timers for spamming were in the game, sometimes I would also flood broadcast like this:

SPAM
SPAM
SPAM
SPAM
SPAM
SPAM

Again, somedays I'd just get bored, and the reactions were quite hilarious. I stopped such behavior when I realized that it really wasn't who I was, and then two weeks later, we get the spam timers.

Lastly, I was a sucker for flame wars, and still am somewhat. It's like watching a ping pong match....your head goes back and forth between the two arguing parties. I wish our most recent one hadn't been deleted....

A few years ago, when you could still fail Hamidon raids via yellow bloom, a friend of mine was leaving the game because he was being deployed to Iraq, and commented he'd never seen a yellow bloom.

So, that night, I was the griefer who pulled a dozen giant monsters to the goo during hold phase until the whole thing failed.

He loved it, but I felt bad afterwards because some people saw me and accused me on broadcast, and a lot of other people came to my defense saying "Leandro would never do something like that!"...

Edit: also, before we were able to save character costumes from the costume creator, I made a program that claimed to do that -- but instead played a certain Rick Astley video. Justified in that it was released on April 1st

I play without sound off, with exactly one exception. When I create a new character, the sound is on. And I sing to the Atlas Park theme...

Dun-DUN-Dun-dun-Du-Du-Du-DUN!

That is all. One of the most nostalgic themes I've heard in a video game (seriously, I think that theme is partially responsible for altoholism).

A few years ago, I sometimes used to go to the top of the Atlas statue, invite new players to team with me, then TP them off the top of the statue to what they thought would be their death... I'm a very bad person!

We know, you took your hat off in last week's Coffee Talk.

When Amy's Ward was bugged a few issues back, a bunch of friends and I ran a Katie Hannon TF specifically so we could let them loose in Pocket D. We killed people.

I grew a beard so I wouldn't have to spend as much time shaving every morning.

I play this game a LOT less that most of you probably imagine. I still have a lot of fun when I do, don't get me wrong, but anyone who's under the impression that I spend hours every night plodding away at it is sorely mistaken. I usually put in maaaybe two or three hours every week. Sometimes I go through spurts where I play more, and sometimes I'm on more if I'm doing stuff like testing Titan Network utilities for Guy or decrypting SSL traffic to sneakily download all of the icons from the Paragon Store for our (benevolent, of course!) use on the wiki, but I've had people ask me stuff like what builds are best, or what I think of some new wiz-bang feature, and I have to stare at them blankly and say, "I don't know, I've never played that." I've never, for example, completed a Magesterium Incarnate trial. I think I've only completed one Underground trial, maaaaybe two. I have a grand total of, I think, two or three level 50 characters, though I think I have one or two more on Belle's account that I never play.

That's not to say that I don't spend a lot of time on things related to the game. Lately, I've been doing a lot of work on a Titan Network revamp that focuses on integrating the sites and providing more of a social network-ish experience. We had some really cool ideas, not the least of which was to build the City Vault that we never got. And we got REALLY close, too; as you can see from the Sentinel+ utility we posted a few days ago, all of the client-side tech to extract the information is there, all that was left to do was hook it up to the Titan Network back-end and write the front-end interface to view it and embed it in other things. I'm still really hopeful that we get to finish that project so that we can knock your collective socks off.

Let me tell you one of the things we had planned, because I thought this was particularly genius. Since we have access to the chat channels, one of the things we were actively working on and had a proof-of-concept actually working for was to monitor the zone event channels for messages indicating, for example, the start and end of a zombie apocalypse in Cap au Diable on Pinnacle. If you were running the new Sentinel+, it would see the start message and, if you had opted in to sending these messages, notify our server about it. When you accessed our home page, there would be a Zone Events portlet that you could subscribe to events on one or more servers so that when you pulled up our page, you'd see that there was a zombie apocalypse going on in the Cap right at that moment that started x minutes ago. When someone's client relayed the end of the zone event, it would take it off the board. Some events that don't have a marked end would show up with a timestamp of when the message was received. Using our home page, you could keep up with pretty much everything that was going on in Paragon City without having to be logged in.

Epic.

And that wasn't all we had planned. And yes, I still hope to finish it.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
