The CO Community & You
So yahoo can ban you because they got their friends and other free accounts to petition you because you didn't do X or because you said something that hurt their feelings.
lovely.
CatMan - some form on every server
Always here, there, and there again.
When someone first told me about this "feature" I assumed they simply misunderstood. Because no one could possibly be dumb enough to put this sort of feature into the game.
I was wrong. For those unaware, in CO there's an auto chat banning system where if you are petitioned more than X number of times by other players, the game will auto silence you from chat. I think from *all* chat. For a long time. It was meant to allow players to self-police RMT sellers. Which in and of itself is prone to abuse, but that abuse can lead to your own account being banned if you do it too much. And then they went F2P. Remember all the debates we had here about how important it was to be careful about what free players could do, what premium players (who didn't sub but bought something at least once) could do, and what VIP subs could do? In CO, F2P players can petition towards auto-banning. The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. PS: I have eight F2P City of Heroes accounts. |

They first introduced that stupid feature in STO, and it was immediately abused by a "fleet" of EVE players. Thru trial and error they quickly deteermind eactly how many petitions needed to be filed to get people chat banned and then enmass started griefing the chat channels. Ultimately Cryptic had to start banning the accounts of people abusing auto-silence feature.
And of course true to form Cryptic didn't learn from their mistakes and added the feature to CO.

Unless i'm mistaken, in CoH it's not automated process and a GM has to do it. Whereas in CO it's automated with no oversight by a human.

Having a human being in the loop allows the intent of a series of messages to be considered instead of arbitrarily silencing someone just because a certain number of petitions are filed.
Our GM looked at the content of messages the forum member was filling the chat channels with and determined that even tho he was changing the sentence structure of his message and the frequency he was posting his message, what he was doing was still spamming.

And ya, there is a LOT of CoH hate going on over there. It got to the point where I filtered out the Zone chat because all they were doing was spewing anti-CoX propaganda (along with a lot of male genitalia jokes, poking fun of how you'd pronounce that acronym), and I didn't want to read that ****. For the record, I am very tolerable of BS chat, I lived through the dreaded "Chuck Norris joke-riddled Barrens Chat" of Ye' Olde' WoW, after all.
Then there was a gem of a player verbally assaulting another over ZONE chat, because he *dared* to join the new Alert system under level 15. Then everyone dog piled the poor guy.
The apparent lack of teaming I also find a bummer, unless you want to spam Alerts. My first goal in the game was to make a sort of "Corruptor/Defender" type of character.. After finding the support system hella clunky, and no one willing to team, I just said "screw it" and respecced her pure DPS.
Granted, I'm still having an alright time.. But I dunno how long it will last. I also find most the powers quite uninteresting.. Can't put my finger on why, but the powers in CoH just seemed so much more substantial.
This is... Pretty annoying to think about. I wonder if they have a decent petition feature at least for subscribers... If GM's are able to access chat logs and respond to situations promptly, this shouldn't be as much of a problem as it seems like it is. I doubt that's the case though, since "deputizing" every single player sort of implies a low level of in game moderation presence to begin with. Cringe.

So that shouldn't be a problem.
I do have a Cryptic/PWE account from STO, so I guess I may just try out CO. I've been whittling down my time on MMOs, though, so I guess we'll see. It may be worth it to recreate my heroes, though.

Neither does my experience on their forums this AM, where the entire first page of general discussion was taken up by spammer links for college football streams...which were still up when I arrived at work. Several of their regulars were bumping useful threads to keep them from drowning in spam.
The Nethergoat Archive: all my memories, all my characters, all my thoughts on CoH...eventually.

That doesn't speak well for whoever's in charge of the game.

This forum is the one exception to the rule -- and even here, I've always found that the class forums are far superior.

Just thought I would mention that one of the CO DEVs just now jumped into the CoX Channel over on CO and gave a pretty nice welcome to everyone there. It was basically a welcome and so very sorry for what happened to CoH. Then he stayed awhile and answered questions.
Afterwards a number of people joined him on a team and they are now out xp'ing...
I just thought it was a nice gesture. I figured I would let folks here know, that at least one of the DEVs over there appreciates our plight.
Well there is an Virtue Server Sg over in Co, Call The Shard of Virtue, who seem to be taking in people form Coh. So If the lights go out in Coh and you don't have a place to call home, they will welcome you guys with open Arms.
Never play another NcSoft game, If you feel pride for our game, then it as well, I Superratz am Proud of all of you Coh people, Love, Friendship will last for a lifetime.

Most all of us, devs and community, appreciate your plight. I know you're a tight knit and dedicated community who are seeing their game die, and it honestly breaks my heart. I quickly signed your petition, as many CO forum goers did. Heck, our CM and a dev ran a meet and greet!
Sadly, it seems that, at least by some, CO here is being treated with much less respect by the forum community than CoX is over in our neck of the woods...
I seem to remember a little while ago when I came back to check out CoX F2P and I mentioned in game that I preferred CO. I believe the term another poster used here was "dog pile". Yeah, that. But it was no big deal; quite common if F2P games. I didn't and don't judge your community by that...
I tend to judge the heart of a gaming community by its forum community. And currently I'm a little disappointed...
And for those of you who think I just created this account to troll, I played CoX back for 6 months back in 2004. I've returned off and on. I've accumulated 3 years of subscription perks whatever you call them. CoX just isn't the game for me. And no, I'm not going into some long diatribe as to why. It isn't and that should suffice. CO is, again no diatribe, it should just suffice...
If you don't like CO, fine. I fully understand. It's not your cup of tea. But we're trying to extend a hand here and some of you folks are spitting in it...
Well, don't judge us all by a few overly disgruntled folks. As I've stated, your invitation is one I'll accept if all efforts to save our game here fail. Your welcome is very appreciated.

That said, i'm going to give CO a try at least. i remember years ago thinking that the look of the character designs was more clunky and plastic toy looking than i enjoyed. As long as the current game's storylines and setting don't have a similar campy, cartoony style i may even enjoy playing it. i have nothing against the occasional silly story.
Edit: Oh, hey! i was just looking for my old CO login and i found my old beta key tucked away in the same note. Wow, it's been a while...

I have never played CO and I'm not a role player. If they were to get likes of Posi, WarWitch, and others from Paragon, on their development team, I would not hesitate to give it a shot.
I have nothing negative to say about the CO community as I only spoke to one person in game. I am just way too accustomed to CoH that CO feels completely alien to me. I stated before that the big hurdle for me were the graphics...I just found them to be ugly and that is why I will not continue playing CO.
If/when CoH closes and some heroes of Paragon make their way to CO I truly hope they enjoy their experience, make lots of new friends, etc.

Since it was set up, I've just kept a tab open with zone chat shut off and the CoX channel on. So far, seems to be several good CO/CoH vets in there who are very helpful in answering questions and trying to teach the newcomers about CO.
Speaking of teaming, though, one thing I have noticed after doing a half dozen or so alerts and the final mission of the Nighthawk "event", is no one says a thing to anyone else. Not even in response. I've jumped into a couple of DFBs where no one says anything until someone else does, then they tend to loosen up, but never any pug on CoH where everyone ignores everyone.

Arc #271637 - Welcome to M.A.G.I. - An alternative first story arc for magic origin heroes. At Hero Registration you heard the jokes about Azuria always losing things. When she loses the entire M.A.G.I. vault, you are chosen to find it.

This to me is pure class, and a perfect example of why I'm moving to CO.
How many WoW Devs do you see doing this?
What about SWTOR?
DCUO?
TSW?
No?
None of them?
The Champions community, including their Dev's, players and community team are bending over backwards to make us feel comfortable and welcome in their game.
Granted there are going to be some trolls, but hell.. I play on Freedom. I'm used to trolls.
I've seen a COH thread stickied on the CO forums. I've seen this CO player post here. I've seen Back Alley Brawler post here. All going out of their way to be welcoming and polite.
They're hosting an official "Welcome to Champions" event for COH players in early December, endorsed by a red name within about 3 posts. Good luck finding that anywhere else.
Trailturtle isn't a dev, he's our brand new Community Moderator and, although we share him with Jade Dynasty, I must say he's doing an awesome job! He's not Zwell, but he seems to be a quality guy.
Look, I'm sorry for my prior post. I would prefer to edit it out of existence, but I've vowed never to edit a post once its been responded to. They're my words and I need to stand by them, explain them, or apologize...
I apologize...
My post was based on offense taken from a, very few I admit, responses. I've lurked here long enough to expect Golden Girl, but FMe eyes over my wife's deathbed? Really? My post was a knee jerk response and a massive over-generalization...
CoX has a class act community. Many of us over at CO know that. It's tragic to to see a tight knit community, any community, torn asunder. Our offer is genuine, our apologizes are sincere. If you choose to visit, we will do our best to welcome you. Just please ignore zone chat...
As for graphics, I get it. I had the same problem switching over from EQ to WoW...
Shutting up now...
