Which post was that?

Because I can't seem to find myself calling you anything of the sort.

Folks... we're from the same planet.

*hug*

As for Nethergoat: I am not going to lie, the demands of the game are pretty crazy. Even my Radeon HD5770 has moments where it dips to 20fps

Are you running at high resolutions, like 1920x1080? I found that turning off anti-aliasing helps a ton, and dynamic lights, too. It's never going to be perfect, but The things I mentioned above have the least visual impact at high resolutions, yet cause a high jump in performance.

Don't let a squabble spoil things :/ We <3 CoH like you do. You guys are awesome, and we would rather have you around to rub off that awesomeness than just go poof if the lights go out.

I've met him too, it's been probably 10 years or so ago, at a con, and he had very recently released a new tabletop game he'd developed called WarChest, which was somewhat chess-like except that it used miniatures representing different characters, and the characters had stats or abilities, IIRC.

I sat down and played the game with him, and I wound up winning, so I can honestly say I've beaten Jeff Dee at his own game. =)

Maybe he just let me win. If anything, he was probably disappointed that I didn't buy it, hehe.

Yeah, a modern video game based on Champs rules and their complete versatility in character options would be cool. But I'm sure there's more than one difficulty with such a design, at least in an MMO sense, where game balance is supposedly paramount to game stability, etc.

I used to have a character with Gigabolt: Death Arc. I remember picking up Death Arc and going into an open mission on Monster Island, and I suddenly had a zillion animal people on me all at once. So I spammed Gigabolt and suddenly the mission was over and I had top score. People who had played through each step of the mission were miles behind me in points.

I actually did feel a bit bad. I think Death Arc's been nerfed since then. It was way too good. Better even than mini mines were during the first month live.

You can also use block and pick up an energy unlock that synergizes with your other powers to get endurance.

Also, it only takes a few seconds to rebuild endurance with the energy builder.

I actually have never tried CO (nothing against it, just that with CoH, I never felt I needed to), but this point is absolutely true of some players. I play on a machine that dates to maybe 2008 (or even 2007?), and is running an ATI 3400 series card. It can't really run Ultra Mode, and is lucky if it manages its way through First Ward/Night Ward. Despite that, I think CoH looks pretty spiffy. Maybe that's bc what I have now is a huge improvement over the previous rig that was running it, which probably dated to 2001-2002.

Regarding the art of CO, my impressions of it were that it reminded me a lot of Daniel Acuña's style, which really isn't my favorite (he's a good artist, just not for me).

If someone says "your statement comes across as delusional," the most intelligible reading, given the apparent verb/object usage, is "this appears to be a statement that someone who is delusional would assert." The real problem is probably just poor word-choice, whereby "delusional" here was probably intended to simply indicate Nether's degree of disbelief rather than genuinely suggest something about the state of mind of someone else. Nonetheless, forum discussions are frequently adversarial, especially when in the background there is a serious issue at hand, so BurningChick's reading was not unreasonable. Refusing to acknowledge what is a fairly straightforward reading is just going to make for even more hurt feelings and aggravation. Let's acknowledge each other, and move on.

Giving CO another try. Almost.

After downloading the 3Gbyte installation, but then the 1.2 Gbyte patch, I finally get it running. I have two screens but the cursor is limited to one, unlike CoH. Anyway, I have a lifetime sub on Cryptic, but I have to create a "PWE" login, I do, i login, but it doesn't link to Cryptic, so then I try to link it to the Cryptic login, but it says my email address is already being used (yes, the two accounts use that email address).

I sent an email to support and they got back to me just two days later (that's the good bit) giving me instructions to do what I'd already done. But in case they did something I'll give it another shot when I get home tonight.

Meanwhile, I tried to play. I got in once with my PWE account, when I realised it wasn't connected to my Cryptic account, but since then every attempt to connect to either server gives me "server timed out" after quite a while. It appears to be unplayable.

Feel free to take offense if you like, but if you interpret what was said accurately you'll find you have no legitimate cause.

I gave CO a serious chance (about 100 hours worth) back when it first launched. I eventually came to the personal conclusion that CoH was the better game, at least for me at the time. I haven't played CO since. I'll probably give it one more chance after CoH shuts down completely on the theory that after a few years it might have improved enough for me to better tolerate it.

It's great that there seems to be a chuck of the CO forum community who seems supportive (for whatever reason) to have those of us who've been playing CoH to come join their ranks. I have no doubt there's a significant number of people who genuinely love CO and would love to have more people come to play their game. Sadly that friendly encouragement does not undo my current opinion that CO is still the lesser of the two games and the only reason I'd be playing it again is that it'd be the closest existing alternative to CoH. *shrugs*

You're trying to reason with someone whose reflexive reaction to any MMO other than CoH is to make insulting generalizations about the devs, players, and game.

I had this problem linking PWE and Cryptic accounts. What ended up working was linking the two via STO rather than CO. I have never even played STO, so I have no idea what that was about. But it worked, finally.

I think CoH is the superior game, at least to my tastes; CO has its warts, just as every game does (including CoH), but there's still plenty there to enjoy, and the players there legitimately enjoy it more than any other game.

Also, nobody in any game I have ever played actually cares whether or not you "jumped ship" for a while. The Account Management page has never had an "admit that all other games suck and leaving was a mistake" step for resubscription.

Every MMO's community thinks their game is the best. Having been in a dozen or so, I'm not sure any of them are wrong. They just all have different criteria for "best".

Yeah, that just about covers it. My experience with CO is similar, and I have a lot of fun with it when I play it. I don't see these games as being something that one has to swear eternal loyalty to, and when people talk that way I mostly just want to back away and hope their delusions distract them before they notice me again.

Dunno if i'll the transition or not, the stories will all depend what happens to this game, and what happanes at the very end, i we cannot manage to save it.

As far as it goes:

The people in the CO channel are wonderful. I was on today, but I missed Trailturtle because I was focused on leveling.

The people on the forum are quite helpful.

The game is fun. The combat system is different, but blocking isn't really a bad thing, nor indicative of a flaw when a character has to block a powerful attack. It may not be to everyone's taste, though.

The game has changed significantly since launch and the first patch. Passive defenses are usable again, many offensive passives are actually fairly useful and provide a degree of defense. Many powersets have been filled out to make certain options more viable - Power armor now has a few more energy sword attacks, for example.

It's not for everyone, and it is not as polished as City of Heroes. It is not, however, a bad game nor a bad community. It does have its elements, but so does CoH.

I appreciate the CO community's receptiveness, but I don't think I'll be headed there any time soon. I downloaded the client, created an ok looking character, and started the tutorial. The way the female characters move and hold their stances was very unappealing. While the open form character creation is interesting, the style is what prevents me from enjoying the game.

I also would not say that CO "sucks" as a MMO in general.
But I will say that I probably won't consider playing it again -until- CoH no longer exists.
