The CO Community & You
I have nothing against the CO community, and I appreciate their response, but I just don't like the game itself very much.
|
I will say that I liked the game better for the 2 weeks I tried it from the trial account (a friend bought a lifetime sub) with the 1 bonus week that it had as opposed to the F2P experience. Even though the character builds are more focused with the templates.
This I do agree with though.

That's not a "melee" set. It's a set of elemental powers usable in melee. At least that's how I'd define it. To me, any set tagged "melee" needs to revolve around physical contact hand-to-hand fighting, else it's not melee. What you're describing isn't so much "melee" as "very short ranged blast/support/control." OK, NOW I see what you're talking about, and now I can actually agree.
|
I think of it more as using the "element" as a weapon.

I'll miss you all.
I will probably download this game the second COH's servers go black because of some of the good posts in this thread. Thanks for sharing.
Psychic melee was going to feature little stabby blades of psychic energy.

So I tried to go into CO with a fairly open mind, but ******* does it have some problems.
It's probably the most sluggish-feeling MMO I've ever played, possibly even the most sluggish game I've ever played too. There's a delay on everything you do, even opening menus and such.
The customisation is alright, but I still had no idea what powers my character was going to have, or what they looked like, or if there was any way to customise their FX. Also, I heard mention of free-form power selection, but it seemed to me that certain archetypes were locked in to specific power themes (like the Glacier and Inferno ATs.)
Also, I've been an apologist of cel shading in the past, and I didn't mind what I've seen of this game in screenshots and such, but it really looks goofy 90% of the time. The running animation, at least for the body type I chose, was so cartoonishly exaggerated, and those faces! The human faces in this game might give me nightmares. This game definitely has a comic book feel, if comic books were all drawn by Rob Liefeld's less skilled younger brother.
I can understand why some people might enjoy CO, but I definitely don't see a future for me there. Thanks for the offer, though.
Really? With mission completion statements like
and I have something of a hard time seeing how whoever wrote those didn't think comic books and the people who enjoy them were anything but worthy of contempt. |
But when you look at the game as a whole, and keep the original cannon in mind, Champions runs the gamut from self depricating "fat comic book fan" jokes, to the amazingly well written (Don't play it yet it's bugged as hell) Whiteout comic series.
Imagine John Carpenter's The Thing, with the chance for actual investigative options, and some bitchin' comic book type fights. (Again, it's got two biiiiiig bugs that make progress impossible and incredibly un-fun. Wait till it get's patched -then- play the @#$! out of it.)
<-General non-targeted commentary on CO->
The thing about Champions is, it not 8 years old. It just hit three years. Remember how CoH was three years in? With bugs, the ammount of content, and number of powers. It doesn't have the level of content CoH does, but -no- game out there has CoH's level of content.
It's not CoH, but it's a fun game and worth a try.
Murphys Military Law

#46. If you can't remember, the Claymore is pointed towards you.
#54. Killing for peace is like screwing for virginity.

we have fifth column/council antagonizing a game developer using complaints that are exaggerations of complaints here, but i dont think paragon or cryptic hate online video gamers.
From what I've read, Foxbat is pretty much Champions' own version of Deadpool, including 4th Wall breaking humor.

Comic books and related media have a long history of poking fun at themselves, their creators, and their stereotypical readers (among many other things). Superboy Prime gets into flamewars with comic book nerds. Ambush Bug breaks the fourth wall and takes the mickey out of anything within range. Deadpool does it, too. Lobo has done it along to the visual tune of varying degrees of ludicrous violence.
I get the feeling that you'd be no fun at a roast.

My brief tenure in Champion Online last night.
LOTS of people bashing CoH players now coming into their game. God help me if I said anything positive. The developers may be welcoming us, but their community is just as snub nosed as I remember. For fifteen minutes I heard a conversation go on and on about us being attached to a sinking ship and its what we deserve, etc. etc. Not just by one player either, there were a slew jumping on the band wagon.
As its stands, after thirty minutes of being berated and being called "Welcome aboard, good luck finding a group flunkie" (that was the most kind thing said to me) I have decided to stick to my intial reaction where this game and its community are concerned.
For the Record, I am not a whiner, fair weather gamer, or a drowning rat. Thank you CO community for treating me like crap just because I said, "Oh, the costume generator is diffrent than CoH. Thank you for..." And then the very person that helped me slammed me with a tirade of how sucky I was for coming over now.
Thank you Cryptic Devs for the invitiation, it was cordial and well intended. Your community, however, has a lot to learn about being civil to others. True, we stuck to CoH, but that is no reason to treat us like garbage.
Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...
Having seen the inflammatory effects of praising any other game (or, really, just saying anything about anything at just the wrong time) in the broadcast/global/area chat of numerous MMOGs, including CoH, I've remained unperturbed by the stuff going on in ChO's chat.

Except that Foxbat dates back to about 1984 or so. He first showed up in one of the early Champions books as a lunatic who was mostly harmless, but could be dangerous. In a way Deadpool is Marvel's version of Foxbat, albeit about a decade later and created by someone who was probably totally ignorant of Foxbat's existence.

It wasn't just global chat it was personal tells. They were spiteful and vindictive. On my first night, within an hour, I had fifteen people on ignore. No, sadly, that community has a lot to learn about being respectful. I didn't respond to any of it either. The nastiness just poured in. No, I have my problems with DCUO, but I doubt I'll receive this kind of animosity there. (Oh, I will thread it if I do, believe me.)
I need some time to cool down. If you could send me the channel info and how to get in it. Maybe when I get back online I'll give this another whirl.
The community in Champs (especially in Millennium City zone chat) can be the equivalent of Freedom server's Atlas Park. But that is what happens when there isn't multiple servers, but one large clusters of servers, with chat broadcasted across all of them.
It can really make it easier to turn off zone chat, stick to created channels (S.G. channels, CoX Channel) and go from there - thats what a lot of people do.
Again, I urge you, if you want to see the Champs community shine, join the CoX channel, maybe join a CoH S.G. you may see familiar faces there.
Edit:
The chat system works similar to how CoH has it - the slash command is /channel_join, so to join the CoX channel, it's /channel_join CoX (case sensitive), that'll link your account to the CoX channel, so you're subscribed to it regardless what character you're on.

-Female Player-
I haven't received any tells in ChO. Of course, I tend to turn on Whitelisting for several things - if there's a 'tell' option for that, I probably turn it on.
Funny story: When I started playing recently after being away since near launch, I kept getting hit with duel requests and was annoyed and went searching for a solution. When I did so I found a nameless "archived post" from the official forums with the same complaint about duel-spamming, and as I read through the thread I was amused when the OP was quoted (thus revealing the name behind the "archived post") and it turned out I was the one who'd started the thread.

Ignore 'em, they're not worth the time. Join the CoX channel and one of the many newly formed Paragon S.G.'s and you'll be surrounded by like minded individuals. Last checked, the CoX channel had over 600 unique accounts subscribed to it, several hundred of them having just joined the channel and have recently come over from CoH. I'm one of the CO and CoH vets in that channel trying to help any and everyone, and the channel is laid back and calm, where you can get your questions about CO answered, chat with fellow CoHers and decent CO vets, and find CoHers to team with.

Also fun is running into people who are in the channel in the game world. And killing the same spawns they are, faster than they are...

But seriously, I had the same problem a few times. Some level 28 ******* was spamming my level 8 self with repeated duel invites, then emoting, then duel-spamming me again. When I refused several times, he proceeded to repeat "duel me." I really wish people who make a fuss about me not wanting "consensual PvP in PvE zones in City of Heroes" could get duel-spammed every now and then, just so they know why I don't want it.
I ended up putting the errant person on ignore, which stopped the invitations. I've gotten blind-invited a lot, blind-invited to Super Groups and even trade-spammed once. And I really don't get it.
The Champions community on the forums and in the CoX channel is amazing and actually very positive, but the actual people I run across in-game? Dear Lord! I guess I should thank my lucky star City of Heroes was so heavily instanced that I didn't see other people as often. Also - thank you, Mission Architect, for killing crowds in Atlas Park. That helped avoid the stupid so much it's inspiring.
