So I have been meaning to write a story about CoH, and also meaning to participate in National Novel Writing Month (http://www.nanowrimo.org/). This year, with CoH closing, I was pushed to finally create the characters for my story, and to use it as the idea for a NaNoWriMo idea. More info on the novel itself here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/particip...s/portal-corps

Quote:Don't worry, I got it.Different base of operations, same MO. Thanks for nitpicking, but I stand by what I said. PWE is nearly identical to NCSoft in every aspect that matters.
The one key thing is that there doesn't seem to be as much of a cultural disconnect between corporate and Cryptic. Yes, they have money grabbing tricks they've forced on STO, but at least everyone seems to be on the same page.
Plus they've just invested a lot of money into the game, so there's a good chance they won't pull the plug just before the next major update comes out. -
Quote:I can confirm that this works! On the download page there is a version for the Beta server. Grab that and you should be able to extract the data from the characters on the Beta server.
I have both programs installed in the same folder, and the export functions quite well for beta and live characters.
The only issue is going through all my characters that are locked and making sure I get them all over to the beta server... -

Quote:That is something I only discovered in the last week (http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?p=4404442)But PI doesn't have war walls, flying north spits you back out into Talos. Is there something I'm missing? Blueside navigation confuses the heck out of me.

I don't get the secrecy thing. Go to the Titan forums, the link Evil_Legacy just posted, and check out the spiritual successor ideas being put up.
Quote:That is one of the things being discussed there. It hasn't been discussed in great depth, because of (I guess secret?) meetings that people are having trying to get NCSoft to sell the game to someone else so it can keep going (which would be awesome) but it is being discussed, and is a large concern.I think the two of you are really just in love with a cause here, and are talking about creative ideas, which are fine and all. All BS aside, unless someone shows me a way a 'Spiritual Successor' would be monetized, what sort of profit potential it could possibly have, I don't care to hear more or wait for any 'secrets' to be revealed. Everyone has awesome ideas for things, that isn't the same as having a legit plan for attracting capital from VC's to develop a product that is worth a damn. -
Well that is neat. I guess I've never done it before. Every other map always had the big blue shield, even if there was no War Wall. I assumed it had been added with Going Rogue, since Praetoria was done with the same sort of transition.
-
So I was flying around PI, looking at some of the smaller islands to the SE corner, and instead of hitting the edge, I went to Talos! How long has that been in the game?

Except I still don't have incarnate abilities, or several contacts, because they are VIP only. Logging in is nice, to be sure, since it means I can actually play characters I can't on the regular server (because of free unlocks from the store) but I still can't experience them to the fullest.
-
Well, I can't post in the proper discussion thread, and it looks like I never will... That is unfortunate. Can they at least unlock VIP status on Beta? Everything's already free over there...

Quote:I somehow managed to get the name "Mind Control" on Freedom... but wasn't able to on Pinnacle. Even though I hardly ever play on Freedom, I didn't delete it, because it was such a cool name (especially for a mind / psionic dominator).Okay, I'll cop to this, too. There's a Glass Goblin on every North American server, most of them in Outbreak or Atlas in a random costume. In my case, I kept them there in case I decided to transfer servers, something I've actually done a couple of times.
Of course, I can't actually imagine anyone gnashing their teeth over their inability to use the name, so I'm not TOO remorseful. -
Speaking of Recall Friend, one time in Siren's Call, I was hanging out in the villain base area on my hero (there was (is?) a specific flight path to avoid all the drones and park yourself next to the hospital door). I had thought that one of my teammates wanted to get to that spot as well, so I tp'ed him.
He didn't have the prompt on, and since I hadn't said anything (thinking we were on the same page) he was in the middle of running around, and promptly ran into drone range. He announced in broadcast "Watch out, they've got someone drone tp'ing!"
...I said nothing... -

Is there a version of this in the works that will work for the Beta server? As a non-vip, I can't play most of my characters on the regular servers, but I can play them on the beta and the free test servers.
-
So I was able to copy many characters over. I was also able to log in. Unfortunately, every slot is locked, and even though I have many slots (and even bought a bunch for 0 points from the store) I can't seem to actually unlock any of the character slots on the test server. Am I doing something wrong? Am I crazy? Am I even on the right server? (The character copy tool had two options, Beta and Public Test Server)
Edit: I guess the sticky at the top of the test server forums isn't clear, and maybe I have to download the CohBeta, not CoHTest... that seems like it should have been made clear. I'm trying that now, per this thread: http://boards.coh.com/showthread.php?t=283313&langid=4 -
Quote:Check out http://starbaseugc.com/ for what STO has done with it. It's a community run website with missions and tutorials. Also, the STO community team is making more of an effort to get Foundry missions in the game more prominently. *shrug* so yeah I guess some good did come of it outside of CoH as well.OTOH, I think that other developers learned from a lot of the MA's mistakes. It looks like Neverwinter's Foundry will be a lot more robust, for example.

Quote:Me too! I wonder if that was ever on the agenda...Awesome story.
One of the odd always wish I could have things was being able to stand on the blimp and ride it around. I think that was my first disappointment in CoH when I finally got a character that could fly and tried to land on the blimp only to slide off. lol...
I've always looked up longingly to the blimp thinking one day. -
I only discovered the Atlas 'copter recently as well. I was flying up to the blimp for fun, and I heard it - it's loud! Took me a while of turning this way and that, but I finally saw it, and thought it was pretty cool.

Quote:I've played STO for a while, and they have the same system (auto-silence someone for 24 hours if enough people report them). It happened to me once, unjustly. I sent in a GM petition, and was un-silenced fairly promptly (and well before the 24 period was up). This is... Pretty annoying to think about. I wonder if they have a decent petition feature at least for subscribers... If GM's are able to access chat logs and respond to situations promptly, this shouldn't be as much of a problem as it seems like it is. I doubt that's the case though, since "deputizing" every single player sort of implies a low level of in game moderation presence to begin with. Cringe.
So that shouldn't be a problem.
I do have a Cryptic/PWE account from STO, so I guess I may just try out CO. I've been whittling down my time on MMOs, though, so I guess we'll see. It may be worth it to recreate my heroes, though. -
Quote:Yes, except I would own it, instead of seeing it on someone else's chest...You mean something like this?
-
The costume creator was definitely one of the best parts. I was able to get several friends to play around with just that, even though they had no gaming experience. Definitely need one of these...
-
For sure. Although I think it'd be cooler if they made a CoH 2, and tied in CoH 1 characters / achievements like they're doing for Guild Wars...

There's a mannequin in the comic book store in The Big Bang Theory that has one... which really just adds insult to injury. Why should a mannequin have one, and not me?
