Well after this game is shut down, NCSoft is certainly not getting any more of my money. They have a penchant for pulling the rug out from under everyone way too often.

Well it was inevitable that this would happen at some point, I had sort of been playing more part time but can't say I won't miss it, almost 8 years is quite some time to play the same game.....

That's what I get for playing MMOs......just as I was starting to have fun

I dont understand how they released new images of the i24 costumes, gave out codes, then BAM.

It was obviously unexpected, even for the COH team.

Funny how there is no OFFICIAL press release on the NCSOFTS site. I just went here.

I'm really kind of torn up about this. I've loved this game and its community for a long time now.

Dang. Thanks.

Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.

HI coh players and friends. i would like to start off by saying i am so sorry i have not been on here in so many years. i was one of the closed beta players and i stayed with this game for 4 years once it went live. due to things outside of my control i had to quit and i did come back at a later point but then i had to quit again.

i was the founding member the the super group mercs of justice and after i left i gave the role of leader to a great person and friend graystar.

i miss all of my mercs and friends in the fusion force as well. i just learned of this dark and sad news today and i put a lot of time and love into this game. it was my 1st super hero mmo and the best one around once again i am so sorry to everyone that this has happened and i am very sorry i have not been around to help out. if any mercs want to get in touch with me please feel free to add me on fb sean shwag maizer is my handle for that.

i wish everyone the best and i hope everyone can meet up on another game if they so choose to.

I just bought points yesterday too. Crap.

When City shuts down, I'll be nary to EVER purchase or play a title from NCSoft again. This has been my one great hope for an MMO and i've loved every minute of it. I'm going to play whatever time i have remaining until it won't let me log anymore.

I knew something was wrong.

When I tried to use the codes that were put up, I couldn't get into my master account. I thought that maybe I had forgotten the password again. I went through the rest procedure and it did not recognize my username...or my email address. Sure I could forget a password, but I never forget that other stuff. So, I thought, "I've been hacked."

I sent a message to support but only got the automated reply. Usually if there's a chance an account was compromised they'd act faster...I guess this is why.

The master accounts are essentially useless. Gods, I'm going to have to find a way to occupy myself. I don't like any of the other games out there for fantasy fulfilment purposes.

And it may be a little over the top, but now I can't get this flippin song out of my mind.

Maybe I'll drop a few hundred bucks into Sony's hands and buy enough vault tickets to outfit my DCUO characters in Tier1 gear and start playing more DCUO.

There's no way in hell I'm going to give money to Guild Wars 2 and they don't even have flight.

Well this is... Confusing. So, we had coffee talk yesterday talking about the new Tech Knight set, and now this? Aren't those things typically decided in advance? And why do something like this? I thought the point of reinvesting in City of Heroes was because it had a stable player base that generated consistent income. What happened to that?

Nuclear Toast brought this up to me, and I thought it must be a joke or a troll, but it seems legit. Which just makes it all the more confusing. What, exactly, do NCsoft have that's generating revenue right now. I can't imagine it's Aion and it sure as hell can't be Lineage II. They already killed Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa years and years ago. And if they're putting all their eggs in the Guild Wars 2 basket, I've tried that game and I don't see it killing WoW. A rabid-fan friend of mine bought it on day one and I can play it on his account for free since he mostly plays on my PC anyway and I'm not that interested. I mean, DC and Star Wars got a pretty stellar start and look what happened to them.

You know what I said about the coffee talks only taking place when there's something to say? Yeah, now would be a good time to have one.

Oh now this sucks!

Dammit!

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Jesus Christ, I can't believe this... Saw the chat on Virtue and went there hoping this was a joke... My stomach is upside down.

I have played this game since launch, and always came back to it in between stints of other, more typical fantasy MMOs. I was very much looking forward to having it and GW2 be my two games of choice for a long time running.

This news is a total punch in the gut, like finding out your pet was killed in a hit-and-run. No warning, no mitigating factors, just... finality.

I can't say how shocked and hurt I am that NCSoft would do this.

I knew it would happen at some point, but damn it, we were supposed to be ******* warned

the game was supposed to close after it hasn't been updated in 3 years, or the devs no longer posted, or after they closed have to severs

not just ******* out of the blue

Does this have anything to do with the Mayan Calander and the End of the World?

Do they know something we don't know?

Awww man, I think I need to go set some stuff straight...

I would guess Paragon Studios was only just told about this today. It's not the first time I've seen corporate stooges do a ninja shutdown. There was a company in my hometown a couple years ago that shut down it's offices over the weekend and shipped everything to Mexico. When the employees came back Monday they found an empty office building.

Incidentally, I've had a cat go out like this, so I know what you mean. Not pleasant.

I'm not there yet, though. For now, I'm just confused. I'd like to have someone from NCsoft at least pass a message through Paragon Studios so we know what happened. Otherwise, all we can take away from this is another EA or UBI stunt based on "business reasons." I can't imagine that'll be very good publicity unless they can put a face on the faceless corporation. Which, being a faceless corporation, I rather doubt they'll do.

I'm not sure what to feel. I'm angry and I'm sad. CoH and the people playing it have really made me who I am and made me realize the sort of creative streak I have.
I'd like NCSoft to know I am very disappointed and I hope they will do something to keep the game going as long as possible or maybe ensure a sequel is made.
If this is the end, however, I'd like Paragon Studios to know that they have given me years of fun and fond memories and I'd like to thank everyone I've met on Defiant for being generally awesome.

Hope to see you all on the streets of Paragon and the Rogue Isles soon!

This SUCKS, SUCKS, SUCKS!!!!

Damnit, where are all those posters that said the game was healthy and would last for years whenever a complaint about population came up. I want to have a word with all of you.

Edit(just because it feels so good): To NCSoft mostly but also all the jerkwad forum cartel(except Samuel who didn't blow it out of proportion but special attention goes out to Forbin Project, Scythus, TerraDraconis and Brillig) that responded to me in this thread. Hope you get the same psychotic treatment you gave others in your next game. I wish you well in life but misery in your next gaming venture.

I'm gunna miss the forums. I'd log in every day to see what drama was going on. Where will I get my drama from now?!

I was doing some playthroughs of City of Heroes. Now they will serve as memories of a better time ...

Jeez, even SWG players could see the writing on the wall when that shut down. Like I said on Facebook, I was considering getting GW2 even though I've never been a fan of fantasy games. NCSoft has now succeeded in making sure that doesn't happen.

My only hope is that another game studio buys CoH and saves it, much like NC did years ago. If only I were rich...
