NCSoft Closing Paragon Studios

Is there any history of an MMO...or any game, for that matter...being saved by its base? If not how do we become the first? We have such smart people in this community. Someone out there must have an idea. I have to believe that it is at least conceivable to save our game...

I've been with this game since Sept. 10, 2004 and have played it and enjoyed the whole time.

I'll be here to the end as well, and I hope the friends I made here will stay in touch. In the end that's the most valuable thing I've gained!

American Dawg, Starblaze, Neanderthal Joe, Shining Dawn, Tokamak Dragon, Stinger Incarnate, Burning Tyger, Dover Tornado, Big Roach, Dark Paladin, Archmage Wylde, Kings Row Hornet, Prancing Deer
Avogadro, Science Lord
Edgar Nightcraft, Doc Cicada, Chupa Macabre, Dr Forchtenstein, Blood Shrew

-Side note, does this mean all of our character names/bios/ideas/lore we created around the game now belong to us again? :P

Well, that was unexpected. I really doubt anyone at Paragon actually knew this was coming (a couple might have known it was a possibility...). Seems like every channel on Virtue is talking about this as well... and I was excited about rolling a new Dual Pistols character later today (damn my altitus!).

There were no signs. None. Recent interviews implied that the game was going from strength to strength, the new content was fantastic and there was plenty more to come. Given the recent run of hacker incidents I can't just believe this yet.

We need some sort of confirmation. Twitter, FB, The site? Nothing is redname confirmation. It could all be hacked.

Come on. Give us a reason.

And watch us Kickstart the hell out of you guys to keep this strong.
It has been posted on FB, Twitter, and the main site. A redname confirmed elsewhere on the forums.

And now I will go back to wondering why I am crying over a video game.

Indeed. I can't trust NCSoft would not pull the rug out on something else they own, after I've grown to love this game so much. I left twice for personal reasons, but I came back both times.

Before City of Heroes, I would not touch an MMO because I didn't like the idea of having to pay a monthly fee. The game I loved the most at that time was Sim City 4.

And not that I trust EA at all either. Looks like I'm going back to my old single player games.

Sigh.

One thing's for sure, I'm gonna be taking an awful lot of screenshots and saving costume files, when I get home today!

Also, I think I've just lost my motivation to get a better videocard. Haha.

I believe our only hope is if the Titan Network sets up a Kickstarter fund to attempt to buy the CoH property from NCSoft. But... I have no idea if that would even work.

Jesus christ. But... there's an issue in beta, more in development, codes being given away... and suddenly this? Out of nowhere?

Just wanted to post a "thanks" to all of the devs who were responsive and kept us in the loop. I think they were likely as blindsided by this as we are, and it's far more impactful for them. Best of luck to you all in future endeavors.

BTW, if this is indeed the end time, I don't think it makes sense to lock away any of the content anymore. Everything should be unlocked. All enhancements of every type freely available. From now until they shut the servers down.

Not just Tabula Rasa, but also Auto Assault as well...

The difference between those two games and CoX is that at least CoX had the opportunity to run in F2P mode.

Looks like I was the bad touch for NCsoft MMO's

Maybe confirmed. We only have Zwill's post. I believe he has access to update the FB, main site, and post. And there is one error with how he posted things. Mind you that maybe simply the shock of being asked to post that announcement. But the announcement should have gone to the announcement forum and there isn't a copy there with a discuss: Announcement thread where the announcement is posted on the boards.

Mind you it is just as likely the shock of being asked to post that announcement which caused the mistake. But there has been no other confirmation post by any other redname besides Zwill that I've seen. So in theory if his account was hacked all that could be done from it. Not likely true but I want to see someone else confirm it.

My heart goes out to all of Paragon Studios.
All of you did great work.

I can't believe this is happening. I won't.

Seriously, as bad as I feel right now, all my love and prayers go out to our developers. They've just had their child taken from them. Yes, I am going to miss my game and my friends, but the pain I feel is but a fraction of what they must be feeling.

I sincerely hope this is a joke because I just burst in to tears.
I'm right there with you. I haven't really got a lot to say except that I really, really wish it weren't so. I've spent a lot of time in this city - City of Heroes is my #1 most played game of all time; beyond any other. I have at least 3000+ hours in this game, very likely more.

I guess this is as good a place as any then to say this:

To the Community: Most of you are freaking awesome people. I have met some absolutely incredible people through COH, many of whom I've kept in touch with at least a little bit via DeviantArt when I'm not actively playing. I just want folks to know how much I genuinely appreciate this community; and how much I enjoyed being a part of it. Some of you probably don't recognize me - that's fine, I was here most often in the early years; but those who know me, well... know you're pretty awesome in my book.

To the Devs, past and present: You are incredible, and you deserve better than this. I've seen this game come through good times and bad, and always - always did Cryptic and then Paragon pull out *something* that kept me coming back for more. Everyone who worked on this game has my utmost respect - you did fine work; and I'm sorry it's being thrown away like this.

Or even better, maybe the devs will develop there OWN COH, call it something else and have the fans pay for it? :P

I doubt NCSoft will hand it over to the devs or players without some hefty payment, after all its a corporation, they dont care about the customers, just $$$.

As you can see I don't post; however, I can't even began to fathom how they can pull the plug on CoH. I mean, from everything I have seen and heard it was still doing well. The development team had ideas for several more years at least. They ran events and many of the servers got red loaded.

I feel sorry for all the loyal players that have poured so much into the game. I feel even worse for the developers that have poured even more into the game. It sounds like they were all pretty much fired, no two weeks notice or anything. Not the way to treat people that did so awesome a job as the development team here did. Thank you for your hard work. Good luck to you all. I hope to find you again, because of the awesome job you did.

They type up all their announcements in advance in a hidden section of the forums, and then move them to the Announcements section when it's appropriate.

My heart sank when I read this. Coh has been a part of my life since college. If I have to take a day off of work just to be there when they shut the servers down so be it.

Thank you to the dev team for making this game awesome for so many years. And thank you to the community for making my play experiences so memorable.

Noooooooooooooo!

I had never played any MMO's before this one, save for trying out one or two for a bit, and this game won me over to subscribing in less than a month. I've never seen any game where the imagination's given such free rein, where you can make any character with any background you like, and with a backstory that branches off into any genre you want to explore. The people at Cryptic who created the world of Paragon City, the Rogue Isles, the Rikti War and age of heroes all deserve enormous credit, and the people of Paragon Studios who cultivated that world, built endlessly on that story, the character possibilities, the missions and events and created one of the most intuitively fun games I've ever played, and THE most fun MMO ever, all deserve more credit than I could ever put into words.

You guys sparked my imagination in ways really nothing had over the past few years, and almost certainly nothing in the gaming world ever will again. Even the simplest things, like just flying and leaping over buildings... no game is ever going to capture *that*, much less a world where everybody from occult-noir Twilight Detective to magical-girl Sparkly Soldier Yuki to supernatual-avenger Astorian Shade can all fit seamlessly into the setting and create their own stories. How difficult, how nearly impossible, building such a game must be is evidenced just be the simple fact that no other MMO out there has ever, ever done it.

I hope and pray this is a hack, an accidental early release of a pre-written message or something, but it looks right now like it's genuine. Astorian Shade will never become an Incarnate and go back to Dark Astoria and challenge Mot to avenge her hometown. The rest of Yuki's AE arc trilogy detailing her future battles with the Nictus will never be written or published. New World Daughter won't be challenging Mary MacComber, redeeming the Cabal and defeating the Red Caps once and for all. All those things are bringing tears to my eyes... that a mere video game could spark such emotion that is a testament in itself of what Paragon Studios has done with this game.

It's only been a year since I joined, but thank you all for an unforgettable year spent running around the most crazy-awesome, genre-twisting setting any game's ever offered, run by developers who have always jumped into the boards and chats and treated us players like friends rather than customers. Maybe I'll post more later, but for now... I hope it's a mistake, but if not, just thank you everyone. It's been fun...
