Quote:So, would it be fair to say even as an RPer, you would not be excluded from PvP base items, say you liked their appearance, because you could simply move a floor tile into a non-PvP position?Originally, the base editor enforced strict restrictions related to PVP. Certain items, such as power and control items, had to be reachable via a clear path -- no objects (even floor tiles counted) could stand in the way. Doorways were also subject to those restrictions and so much as looking at one funny could cause you to not be able to place anything nearby.
All of that so that if someday, you decided you wanted to turn your base into a PVP raiding base, it would be "fair" to the opponents who raided it.
And, my god, no wonder that system went away. That sounds like a horrible mess trying make a base PvP-ready, in respect to coding that is. -
Quote:I'm not sure what you were disagreeing with. I only referenced it because it was actually part of the system at one time so rightfully assumed if bases were ever fully fleshed out, it would only be one among many options. I never indicated it was the only option. And how was it perma-linked? I vaguely remember being in an SG that participated in PvP for a short time but wasn't that linked to certain items that placed inside the base? i.e. if you didn't use certain items, no PvP. I disagree PvP was not on their radar because unlike anything else anyone may have heard about base systems, it actually existed and was playable at one point in time.
Disagree with this somewhat. Bases should never have been perma-linked to PvP. It should have been OPTIONAL. Many groups used their bases for RP purposes, or even simply as showcases for their visions... raiding and PvP was never on their radar.
HOWEVER, I do agree that bases could have used more functionality in terms of group activities. The re-vamped CoP was, even considering it's flaws, a step in the right direction.

1. Lack of diversity in missions that I think should have favored ATs and/or powersets to the point failure was a real possibility so replayability was increased.
2. Outside environments soon became just pretty wallpaper. More interactive elements and more lively atmosphere(seriously, those cranes in Independence have done nothing for years.)
3. In-game physics were never fully pursued.
4. No alternative gameplay beyond beating baddies to level your character(could in a way be related to Number 1). i.e. we never got our secret identity system or skill based system.
5. Bases were never fully realized. Not just PvP but taking a note from CO, instead of one character having an arch nemesis, the whole SG would have one and occasionally need to defend their base. I think it especially important because very few got to enjoy base-building if in a large SG so defending it against a threat, I would perceive more value in it as 'just one of the grunts'.
6. A little more voice-acting like in the beginning tutorial from the Freedom launch. I thought it had great flavor and had looked forward to it in at least another mission/story arc or two in the next Issue. never happened. Like physics, it seemed more like an experiment.
7. City Vault.
I guess closer to Suggestions and Ideas than where they went wrong but that's what I have. -
Quote:I'm glad I stopped by this weekend to catch up on some news. Enjoy that spotlight, Brillig. You deserve it.In a world of "Save our game" you shouldn't be an outward jerk when someone calls you on holding the "why bother" flag. I understand your arguments logically. But please, don't lump this entire forum into some crowd you want to condemn just because people don't share your view.
That same crap you gave me when I tried defending myself and here you fell into the same trap as everyone turns your words against you. "Outward jerk", indeed. ROFL
While not as optimistic as many here, I will still watch out for any news where I can back up monetarily what I feel in my heart for this game. i.e. if/when something comes out of this movement and they need some funds, I will be ready. Of course, I'm not some millionaire but if a couple hundred dollars can help toward some significant goal, it is something I'm willing to risk.
Good luck to all of you(esp TonyV, /thumbs up for your gargantuan effort) and I hope we can do something nice for the developers again. -

Quote:No worries, E_L. You are not alone in your thoughts. Yes, it is disconcerting and confusing to have your words so completely misunderstood and when you try to defend them, the effort to pick them apart and throw them in your face only escalates as the others join in for no good reason. I learned years ago to seriously curb my forum posting and put a ton of people on ignore to filter the amount of noise present here. Great community to ask a question about gameplay but unless you are a computer science major, have some game design history or were the top of your debate team, it is just not worth posting anything here beyond that. That is unless you enjoy conflict or posting infinite essays. I don't, I have enough work to do.Not trolling and communication 101, which I did take, did not deal with online internet COX game forum communication at all which seem to have it's own set of rules that change on whim and only apply to certain people.
The in-game community is in stark contrast compared to these forums, imo, and it is because I ignored what went on here that I continued to enjoy the game for so long. Do your best to ignore anything here and remember how much enjoyment the game brought you. It will be missed. -
Quote:Uggh, yes, I won't miss number 5. Sometimes I would almost make myself suspect because I would go back to where the person was standing and face them directly for a few minutes. Usually, it worked and they would keep moving but was annoying to have to do that more than once in a TF.1. The Cartel attitude.
2. People complaining about PLing.
3. The 7th grade banter non stop in Atlas Park broadcast.
4. G.I.R.L.s
5. People who AFK for 20+ minutes at a time in a mission/tf/trial.
My top 5 pet peeves
But oh gawd yes, so much number 1 and those that had similar attitudes but lesser titles(scythus and brillig jump to mind recently). There is so much I could write but as in the previous years(see post count vs join date), it is just not worth posting essays, let alone posting them ad infinitum as they have done and healthier to ignore. Wish they could have done the same. I partially blame them for some population decrease with their overbearing need to be right and disguised vitriol at anyone that slightly critiqued the game, let alone slamming it for one reason or another. I'm glad to read I was not the only one to recognize this negative mark on the out of game community. That they will be dispersed to the winds is the only silver lining in this sad ending to a great game. And if any of you overly arrogant people have trouble getting your refunds...karma. I wish you the same in the near future as you had treated me over the past years.
And yes, Hasten sound effect. So many times when going AFK, I was either scared out of my chair or annoyed to heck when that sound seemed to come out of nowhere. I'm going to miss this game. -
Bye, Zwill.
Your coffee talks will be missed. -
Quote:Excellent summation of how I feel also. Yes, I feel like I don't belong in any other 'universe'(CO, WoW, GW2, TERA, etc). I think it is an insightful evaluation but I wish I hadn't read it because it is a sobering and sad thought."Not upset but shocked" - lump me in that group.
I'm slowly realising I grew bored of MMOs about 3 years ago, but just felt so comfortable in CoH with my little group of friends I kept to these habits.
Everytime I try a MMO since 2009 or so, I log in, play for maybe a hour or two, log out, never log back in. There's just something missing, I just can't get immersed in these kinds of games anymore.
Inevitably, we all grow up. Not to say MMOs are childish, that would be silly; but, for example, when I started playing Warcraft 2, EQ and T4C, I was in my early twenties, and I could relate to most other players, as they were probably in the same age group. Now, at thirty-...something, the average MMO player age hasn't changed too much, and most people I meet are young enough to be my kids. This makes it much harder to connect with them, to develop meaningful friendships.
One of the draws of MMOs, to me, have always been that it made me feel like I was part of something bigger, an entire virtual universe, an unknown world to explore, with different rules and logic. Now? I feel like I'm a stranger everywhere I go, and I feel like I see the code behind the game rather than the game itself. These are not bestial critters trying to rip my flesh open, these are mobs of the same level as my character, mobs who move and attack in a very specific way. This is not a sword and a shield, this is loot generated from a table according to the mobs' level. This isn't the most beautiful city of the land, this is a hub for quests and NPCs, who are in turn nothing but quest givers and captain expositions. And so on. The immersion is gone. The magic is gone.
People point at the industry, and perhaps it plays a part, but objectively, looking at older games, you can have that same disappointing outlook. A MMO is a bit like a magic show, it's fun to be impressed at first, and it's fun to figure out the tricks, but once you have done so... There's little left to do, save for following your friends jumping ship from new game to new game, hoping to recapture an experience that can only be experienced once.Overall then, I should be grateful I received 8 years of that magic. Thank you again, Paragon Studios and I will thank NCSoft as well for making it happen.
On a side note: I will be saving more money now since I don't have the constant 'pull' anymore. It will be highly unlikely that I invest so much money(and time) in any future MMOs as I did CoH. -
-
Done and thank you, Paragon Studios! I hope you have a wonderful time.
-
Thank you for the summary, Obsidius. I tried watching it but it was too painful seeing no one in the background as I was accustomed too.
-
Never in my life would I have thought I would pay a monthly fee for a game, never in my life would I have thought I would play a game for nearly 8 years, never in my life would I have thought I could come so close to my dreams about being a superhero as I did when I read comics and never in my life was I so excited to Fly for the first time. (the last line was a metaphor for my entire experience in the game).
Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for making all of this and more possible!!! I've had 8 years to experience other MMOs, so as far as I'm concerned you ARE and forever will be the BEST MMO that ever existed.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! -
Quote:Something Awful forums then go to the MMO HMO section. If you have a different type of passion for the game, aka, you defend it to its very core, don't go there. They have a different type of passion for the game/community.Add your something awful to the list anyway, Zwill, don't just tease us with it!
-
Thank you for the 8 years of wonderful adventures!!! Best time EVAR
You are a talented bunch and I have zero doubt you will be snapped up in a heartbeat. I will miss you and this game, greatly. -

Quote:This. Obviously, CoH was not healthy as so many seem to think by blaming on some fantastical situation.Yeah, I saw that thread. Unfortunately, none of it comes from an actual official source. It is all pure speculation and conspiracy.
Look, I am no fan of post-City of Heroes Cryptic. I played Champions for all of one week after it went F2P just give it a basic try, and found the world, missions, combat, and overall art style extremely bland and uninspired. Even the villain groups were boring. I know Champions RPG Lore, Cryptic could have done so much more with it, and didn't.
I have no love (or hate really) of Cryptic. But until something official is actually stated on the License pricing being the reason, I'm not tossing the blame anywhere.
If, and I say IF, City of Heroes was still profitable and NCSoft made this decision, there was definitely some underlying reason. Businesses aren't typically in the practice of shuttering profitable product lines. But unless the License or some other issues is the culprit, then the only other reason is CoH was no longer generating what it needed to.
And even if NCSoft ended-up making some off-the-wall decision for our game . . . as an above post said: I'm not going to punish the good people at ArenaNet for it. No, I haven't jumped on the GW2 bandwagon yet, but if reviews remain good the first 60-90 days post-launch, I do plan to get it. -
Infinity was my first server and where I met some good friends. I really miss them as they left long ago but wanted to say thank you and god-speed to in-game names of:
Pinky
Princess Bubble
Crimson Steele
It's time for me to finally hang up my cape and move on to other real life adventures as you did so long ago. -
Quote:I am to a degree but I might as say what I really feel about certain posters. It doesn't matter now and I'm not holding back.Sorry. My sincerest apologies. I just needed a scapegoat and the NCsoft execs weren't available.
As far as the game is concerned, I am truly sorry and sad to see this game go despite what anyone thinks. You don't know me and considering your attitude over the past years, I don't want to know you. I've truly enjoyed the switch to Freedom and finally found my pacing in game where I enjoyed nearly every aspect.
Nothing else comes close to this game and it is just sad.
But what makes me happy is FU Scythus:

Quote:Haha, mostly true. You weren't as zest-filled compared to Forbin either so no, I don't have much left for you besides letting you know I think you are your like were horrible and glad I eventually won't have to see your names anymore.Because initially I thought you had more zest after you filled this thread with your cancer. Unfortunately, it seems you spent it all on Forbin.
Game great, about 10% of you in the forums, not so much. -
Quote:If I'm so boring then that doesn't explain the time you took to respond. That indicates some interest though I rather you weren't. I will not miss many of you at all. In-game friends, SGs and CoH itself, definitely. You, not so much. Good riddance to rubbish. Please, just keep responding. You mention you wished these comments didn't exist but all it took was the simple act of ignoring them which you are not capable of. But keep calling attention to it and making it worse. lolNo kidding. But ignore goes against my free speech principles. And he's actually a boring troll. No inkling of a hot button push.
You guys keep patting yourself on the back. You are good at that. -
Quote:lolwat? Whatever, armchair psychiatrist. You keep playing those multiple roles in your own fragmented mind and keep them out of real life.I'm curious, do you actually believe we're standing in a line or were you unable to come up with with rebuttal that made sense? Because the former implies that you are more mentally insane than I am, and the latter implies that you have no cognitive function whatsoever.

Quote:Back atcha. You are just exacerbating the issue and calling attention to something you want gone. Not very smart of you. But I expected nothing less. Typical response and you should just be happy I barely posted over the 8 years. You are just reminding me why I did so and I'm glad I said what I did. Got it off my chest(not about the game closing but the a-holes present on the forums such as yourself) and time to move on. Suggest you do the same.I am really not handling this well. I have real mental health problems and accepting change is not a thing I do well. I just... I just don't know what I'm going to do. I loved this game.
Oh, and Tutelary is a giant ********* for filling this thread with trollish "told you so" excrement. We really don't need such behavior on a sad day like this.
