Is it justified?

I think the price's could do with some looking at.

Beast Mastery can only be used by one AT, but costs the same as a powerset that can be used on four AT.

That doesn't sit right with me, and may be the real reason that I'm skipping Beast Mastery as a purchase.

The devs have been clear that MM sets are the hardest to make, which is why there are so few of them. That is why I figured it cost the same as the rest. I love the set, love seeing it in game, and think it is super cool. I am skipping it because I simply suck at playing an MM. I know I would never use it, and it would just sit there. This is the same reason I have not purchased Beam Rifle.

I can promise this though. I will purchase EVERY melee set that is ever put in the market.

I've spent lots of extra cash on points for frivolous things, let alone power sets. I don't mind at all. If the time comes when I can't afford it, or even to pay my monthly sub, then I'll re-evaluate but for now I'm happy to contribute to the development funds.

I don't mind it at all really. We still get a mix of stuff that's free for everyone and free for VIP, my monthly fees are paying for that stuff.

The other stuff is nice because I don't have to buy if I don't want to. I don't play MMs, so I don't need Beast Mastery. but I'm going to be all over Staff Melee.

Now I only wish I could skip spending reward tokens on things I don't want or use. (Like prestige sprints, the boxing outfit, or the going rogue pre-order bonus I already have)

I'm okay with it. I've picked up Beam Rifle and Titan Weapons (although I slightly regret the latter, but whatever). I'll probably pick up Staff Fighting, because in beta it was a lot of fun. And whenever they get around to releasing Carp Melee I'll buy that, too (as long as it's not Leprechaunishly priced).

There are pricing decisions I certainly question, but it sounds as though the studio is still finding their way, so I'll manage. And like Samuel, I can appreciate the comfort that comes with knowing you don't have to worry about each individual purchase.

Personally, I'd love an "ICON Preferred Customer" package where for an extra couple of bucks a month you get all the costume options as soon as they are released, even the in-game unlocks. (Dons flame-resistant cape but haute couture cape for the inevitable assault.) However, I can only imagine what a coding nightmare it would be to add something like that to the billing system, so I'm not holding my breath.

So far yes. I'm basing that on the fact that the rate of free powersets seems about as it was before Freedom. Therefore the new purchasable ones are an additional option, and you get enough points with your sub to buy them every 2 months.

So far I've only bought Beam Rifle, which is quite entertaining. I've made seperate Dark Control, Dark Assault and Time Manipulation characters too and I enjoy them all I have to say.

I've no real plans to buy any others, they don't appeal to me really (although I've seen some really nice weapon looks for Titan Weapons running around which could tempt me at some point if it went on sale and I had the points doing nothing anyway)

THIS. I can't remember the last time we got so many new powersets so close together pre-COH Freedom.

Thanks Sam! You're exactly right.

It's kinda like when my internet connection went from pay-by-minute to monthly subscription. It's just such a huge benefit when you don't have to worry about micromanaging your time or what you want to do in a game.

I don't want to know the Paragon Market exists. I don't want 'free' paragon points, because I don't want to be bothered by paragon points at all. But, as Sam said, with the concept of consumables, that ship has sailed and sunk by now.

I had no problem when CoH was a subscription-based game, that occasionally released costume packs. They were few and far in between, so it was quite simple to grab them all. New releases every Tuesday? Consumables? I feel stressed just thinking about it.

All the extra pay for stuff has been on top of that. And we're already getting a discount in the form of the monthly points.
I think what he's trying to say is that VIPs don't get much free that is not free to everyone, VIP or no. It doesn't seem like there has been a great deal only VIPs get free, until you count what your free points get you. I know I'm not feeling slighted, but I think many people forget to count their points among the free to VIP content.

MM sets in general are far more work intensive than other ATs' sets, BM even more so since it's making use of a whole new rig.

I enjoy the ala carte system. Beast Mastery isn't for me, but Street Justice was. Staff Fighting is a meh for now - I'll wait for it to go on sale and use my accrued PPs to buy it.

I feel like I'm trying them less than I normally would try a new powerset; especially since I rolled a Beast MM on beta, and when I went back to have a look at her to see if I wanted to purchase the set, I was locked out of the character. Really....? Seriously....?! Lawl.

Even less inclined since I was talked into trying Titan Weapons by someone else, purchased it and hated it. Tried Beam Rifle on my other account - had a ton of free points - and hated that. Were Beast Mastery at least available for trial on my main account, I'd give it a whirl till at least level 10, but I can't so no big loss.

As others have said, if it gets me more powersets faster then I'm fine with it. The new system has pretty much justified itself in my eyes; I'm getting more of what I want than I would have under the old.

This, plus the fact that some of the for-sale powersets have required additional resources outside of what most powersets require -- mechanics like Momentum for Titan Weapons, two-handed weapon animations for Staff Fighting, or an entirely new rig for Beast Mastery.

Since you're apparently almost guaranteed to hate it yet at the same time seemingly very likely to spend points on it anyway, what exactly is the devs' motivation to let you try it for free?

There has also been a LOT of power proliferation, which, while they are not NEW sets, are sets that were previously unavailable to those ATs. So in that regard, they technically count as new sets, especially Dark Blast and Psychic Blast for Blasters, since they were changed enough to be different sets than the Defender/Corruptor versions.

Have they release the ability to change powersets with an existing character?

No, and they likely won't.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I thought I was missing some, I went through the wiki's issue pages and couldn't see 'em. Although it does skew the free/paid for power ratios, I'm willing to pay extra for new powersets, like players have always had to do. But now more so than before, since it speeds up the process.

^ This. Considering how wildly differently some powersets play even within the same AT, it would be downright stupid of them to allow powerset changing like that. But, with how quick leveling is in this game, it's no big deal anyway.

Also, allowing someone to respec into another AT and/or power set would make it even easier for a Free player to try out everything while only having two character slots.
