i think of Sting as being more of a dagger, but it was a sword in the hands of a Hobbit, so i can see that.

As far as D&D playing a role in the evolution as a key point in RPGs does no mean it's not trash and just because something is trash doesn't mean you don't respect what it did for whatever. And like you said about popularity... being a key point doesn't make it quality either.
Ugh, you didn't read the part about Stormbringer very closely then. The author makes it rather clear that while he was first familiar with Stormbringer from it being in D&D he was aware of its source and appearances elsewhere. Also, you alleged it was the wielder that made the sword significant, but the article makes it very explicitly clear that it was the properties of the sword itself that fascinated him.

Eh, i know, i know...

What no Frostmourne?

I don't even play WoW and I love that sword.

To be fair, putting Frostmourne when Stormbringer is already in the list would be pretty redundant. Conan's atlantean sword from the 1982 movie and Death sword from the Discworld series should have been in the list in my opinion.

Stormbringer ought to have been number one. I occasionally re-read The Quest for Tanelorn, just to see an Eternal Champion actually refusing the black sword. Chills up my spine and all that.

Also, the list needed more Greyswandir. And probably more Somerswerd, but that's absolutely an obscure source.

Never heard of Stormbringer and well aware of Bilbo and King Arthur.

I know, right? I mean, if I went around saying I was emperor, just because some moistened bink lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away.

Obscure meaning that it hardly ranks in a 'top ten geek swords' list, not that 'no one but me has ever heard of it.' (As an aside, my brother played a Katana/Dark scrapper named Helshezag here.)

Yes, I have a copy of the 3.5-based LW RPG - though I think I heard they'd made a new edition not based on DnD.

I'd put Need from the Valdimar books on the list before some of the ones they listed.

I'm not sure it would be in the top ten, but it's better than some of their choices.

I would think that in most circles, if you asked what are the top sci-fi / fantasy swords, the answers you would mostly hear are Excalibur, and Light Sabers.

Storm Bringer defintely needs to be at least #3. For any that haven't read an Elric story, you need to.

Sting should be there or at least get honrable mention since it really was a daggar but ended up a sword in a hobbit's hand.

Connor McCleoud's katana most deservedly needs to be on that list as well, and while I love Kill Bill, putting that katana above this is a crime.

They probably should have went ahead and made it a Top 25 list.

My mind also went to Voltron's sword.

It's not about just being powerful or "awesome" it's about being the unobscure obscure. In other words a "geek top ten" would be generally recognizable by anyone and while generally people don't know the names of the weapons or what not the moment you tell them what they are they'll probably be oh yeah i know what that is or have a chance of that happening.

The weapons in that list are not such weapons. even if you explain them to someon most of them will be like "wha?" or they simply aren't at that level which is where popularity comes in. If a sword isn't popular enough to be cosplayed it likely doesn't meet the requirements of a top ten If it doesn't have instantly recognizable form or story then it probably doesn't belong.

Also, the reason I don't include the "lightsaber" in my list of 10 is cuz it is a type of weapon and not a weapon itself and Luke's lightsaber isn't the same lightsaber throughout...same reason why Leonardo's Ninjato doesn't belong on the list nor Hatori Hanzo swords.

As far as Excalibur being #1... geek culture i'd say it belong low on the list, the form changes so that's hard to say, but if we're going for shear power there is no more powerful sword. The Excalibur Sword is a literal "I win" button. That is its power ^.^ The reason Arthur lost in the end was cuz he didn't have the scabbard with him and he let go of the sword and technically he did win the war.... he just died ^.^

Swords to include on the list:

1. Connor Macleod's katana, forged ahead of its time, folded about 500 times if I recall Ramirez' description correctly.

2. Duncan Macleod's katana: clan sword of the Japanese lord that took him in and taught him the ways of the samurai, honor, martial arts, the katana...

3. Voltron's blazing sword (5 Lion Voltron, not the dreaded vehicle Voltron)

4. The sword from Sword and the Sorceror: 3 blades, 2 of which could be fired and the handle could detach and serve as a dagger.

5. the master sword from Zelda

6. the master sword that Fortress Maximus used in the Transformers: Headmasters cartoon from japan

7. Kurgan's sword

I disagree with the idea that it needs to be obscure for it to be a "geek Top Ten" sword. Being nerdy and being obscure are not neccesarily connected. One of the most iconic swords of all times, the lightsaber, is also considered pretty nerdy.

Jay Doherty: Yes, there was this one night that I was ready to go home but had to drop the browns off at the super bowl before I left for home. While on the throne it hit me. I stayed for a few more hours and that why we have the pain pads in the game.

Damn skippy!

Its to bad a few D&D swords didn't make the list like the Black Razor ( modeled after Stormbringer) and Catti-brie's sword Khazid'hea or even the Sword of Kas (which severed Vecna's hand), the latter two being forged awesome sauce in the form of swords of sharpness or Fragarach, ManannĂ¡n mac Lir's sword as used in Greyhawk which cost the wielder initiative but always allowed them to unerrringly strike last in any round or even Drizzt's scimitars Icing Death and Twinkle.

Egad, I forgot all about that one.

Just poked around wikpedia about Hawk the Slayer and it seems a sequel, Hawk the Hunter is being planned.

Also according to the Hawk the Hunter site there is apparently a third movie being planned called Hawk the Destroyer....

Always tended to view it as something of a gladius short sword style myself, But I am always picturing it next to a hobbit, so I think of it as bigger.

Narsil and Glamdring (aka "Beater") were not so shabby either. Narsil managed to clip Sauron, though at great cost.

Though likely not in the top 10, I would place the Sword of Shannara fairly high on a personal list, though it did function differently than a traditional sword.
