Reboot of Thundercats tonight on ...
Interesting idea, but I somewhat doubt that the writers would bring us the exact same characters using what basically amounts to a lazy excuse to give fans the exact same characters again. Including villians such as Slythe (sp?).
I think its safer to say that this is a reboot and the backstory to the Thundercats and even that of third earth has been rewritten. Either all, most, or some of the sentient animals have always existed on this third earth, or all, most, or some came from off planet at some point in time.
Either way, it appears that they've all been here a long time.
I'm interested to see how the story unfolds, and why the Thundercats walled themselves off from the rest of the world and abandoned technology.
And if there's an entire planet to be had, why the lizards and cats are at war over resources on just one portion of land. The captive lizards said that the cats have all the resorces and they still to survive. Does that mean that other civilizations / city states don't exist, are really far away, or are in control by other powerful populations that the lizards couldn't contend with?
My dvr is set...
We keep calling this a remake, when it's really more of a sequel.
They're on Third Earth already, with a new "Thundera" built around the old Thundercat base. There's a clearly stated history involving Mumm-Ra. Sure, the names of the main characters are the same, but it's not hard to imagine that the names would become popular to future generations. |
I'm happier thinking it's just that they wanted to come up with a more comprehensive and coherent backstory than, "we crashed here and there's a lot of weirdos around"

As silly as it is to critique tactics in a Thundercats cartoon....
(Spoilers)
One has to wonder about the morale of the first attack wave. They're told to use swords and wooden shields against a high-walled castle defended by archers and mounted knights. IE, certain death for many of them. And they do this knowing that they are keeping their blaster rifles, tanks, long-range missiles, and giant mecha _in reserve_ because their general wants to see the reaction on the enemy king's face when the high-tech stuff appears? There's a difference between "drawing the enemy out" and "Suicide attack against a vastly inferior opponent."

Awesome... absolutely awesome. Now THIS is how a re-make of an 80s cartoon should be done.
I actually think I detected a plot and series-wide through line in there somewhere! SWOOOOOON... |
Incidentally, I found it a bit strange that Kit and Kat were the only Cats to have tails (that I noticed).

I think it's pants. Wear pants, don't see tail. Wear a poncho/sack/skirt, then tail.
Or it may be type of tail. Can't hide a bushy tail in pants.

Finally saw the reboot, thanks to a friend that DVR'ed it and Oh my god was this kick-[censored] awesome. Now this is how a reboot should be done. The new Thundercat series has me hooked and I really can't wait for the next episode.
The only thing I'm wondering is if this is a reboot or some kind of vague continuation from the original series. There's talk in the show about how the founding Thundercats defeated Mum-Ra, establishing Thundera on Third Earth, and lost tech. Either way it's still a great show

I saw it and I'm impressed so far. It was only the pilot but the standard is there and I will be looking forward to the series as it develops.

Your opinion carries a lot of weight with me. Actually everyone's been a bit more positive than I imagined. I DVR'ed it as well, but so far have only seen one small preview bit with Jaga training Lion-O on the use of the Sword of Omens. I wasn't really impressed with the character design (in an admittedly brief clip), but I DID catch some familiar sound effects and musical stings that I felt were appriciated call-backs to the original series.
Gonna try to watch myself in the next day or two.

I really enjoyed the pilot. I like the redone personalities and mythology so far, and I particularly like the idea that the Thundercats are a privileged empire, while all the other animals are treated as lower-class beings; it's a good motivation for the lizards to oppose them. Looking forward to seeing more.

Still, I don't completely buy that theory. The original Cat's Lair (with the white "body" and dark blue "head" and "paws") that we see at the heart of Thundera in this pilot was destroyed toward the end of the old series, with a new design being built to replace it. I suspect it was just meant as a nod to the original show, but we'll see.
