If the server must go down, I'd like it to be by our hands, close enough to the end that they don't bother to restart it. So that we, in some small way, never face that end.
At best you'd crash one zone. Trust me, done it before (not specifically PD, and not in a specific attempt by players to cause a crash, but yes players in a full zone using their powers)
  3. There have been a lot of things I've suggested that made it into the game either directly or indirectly. Since there were far more I suggested that never saw the light of day, and since I was never doing it for credit in the first place, I've largely forgotten what they were.

I'll take credit for originally suggesting the brain jar and bubble helmet though. Way back in Sexy Jay's original costume request thread.

It doesn't mean they were willing to sell it. It means they were willing to name a price. It's quite common to name a ridiculously high price for something you don't really want to sell, just so you can say you acted in good faith.
  5. As of today, I would not start over totally from scratch. The game continuing in any form is a long shot at best, and if somehow it works out that it does but we need to start over, then whoever ends up running it would have to convince me they were in it for the long haul before I would change my mind.
  6. 1. Is Sister Psyche really dead, or could she eventually reincorporate if she found a new body?
1a. Was Manticore going to eventually become a villain?
1b. Was Scirocco eventually going to become a hero?

    2. Was there ever going to be redemption for Hero1 and the Rikti?

    3. How did Hamidon really get from the Hive to the Abyss?

    4. Where there ever any even slightly serious discussions about more Villain only zones? Possibly villains annexing one or more Shadow Shard zones?
  7. I'm proud to say I have gotten to team with Bill a couple times over the years. Never enough.

    *looks around* Yeah, that.
  9. Love you Bill, even if you made me pull my hair out during that phase when you were annoyed with the game. You're a good man.

I didn't trust or accept most of UnSub's reasoning when he was playing and posting here, I'm not going to start now. Sure he played for 5years, but he was a consistent Debbie Downer for at least 3 and a half of those, and has made it clear he's had an axe to grind in his blog ever since.

  12. Anyone giving serious thought to using their characters in a commercial venture of their own someday should still give some thought to deleting them. As long as they exist in the game's storage, they're owned by NCSoft, even if the game is no longer active.

It may be unlikely, but they could sue people who use their character names and likenesses again. If all rescue efforts fail, that is.

I only say this to creative types serious about reusing the ideas they came up with here in their future career. Once the game goes down, your chance to delete them will be gone, and everything is still up in the air as to whether it will be deleted.

It's something you will have to think about. I fully realize the chances of them seeing something that may look a bit too much like a CoH character and diving into archived characters to find it, then suing the artist using it is slim to none. Then again, I expect a lot of comic artists never expected to have trouble with their former publishers when it came to rights to their creations.

IP is important, and I'd think long and hard before leaving an idea you're attached to in someone else's hands.

You're damn right I'm spiteful. Just like people are mad at NCSoft for killing CoH, I was mad at SoE for killing the SWG I loved. And I don't know how many times I have to say this, the fact that they have the money does not make them trustworthy stewards of the franchise.

People here seem willing to give up their existing characters, the (up until Friday) existing dev team, and whatever else they have to just to not lose their toy. I maintain that once you're bargaining and giving things up, you've lost, and this game WON'T BE COH ANY MORE.

It's not wrong for people to be doubtful and scornful of the idea that a rumored saving angel isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

Be hopeful all you want, but a simple fact of life is every party has to end, and sometimes it's a lot better to make a graceful exit even if you want to stay, than to try and stay and end up in a situation you will probably regret even more.

Any chance this is a precursor to COH2?
That actually doesn't happen in as many games as you'd think. Additionally, it is only done when doing so would mean a significant savings in maintenance costs.

This game isn't being killed because it was unprofitable. It is being killed because NCSoft is an example of a company that always goes for the next shiny, and because they've done that too many times, they feel they have to sacrifice an old game that was actually making money for them.

If there was going to be a COH2, they wouldn't have dissolved Paragon Studios.

So much for the sense of community.
    We agree.

    I...

No worries tex, most people feel this way after running a TF with me.
  19. This is one of those times I agree with TonyV. It doesn't happen often, mark it down.

If NC Soft had even a semblance of a marketing department, we would have seen them try to capitalize on every major mainstream superhero breakthrough of the last decade. Ads during Heroes and Smallville. Demo discs and posters in comic shops. A push with more comic companies to feature their characters in the game for cross promotion.

Instead, they did jack and squat. They sat there with their thumb up their *** even when given free shout outs by Big Bang Theory.

I played AA. It was... not good. Yes, it had the potential to be good, but at launch and the first few months after, it was a hot mess. They were on something like their 3rd or 4th design for crafting and it was still bad. The physics was iffy on a good day. Leveling was more confusing and frustrating than I've seen. PvE balance was nearly nonexistent, you either won easily or died. For a game that was supposed to be about driving, there was a lot of see sawing back and forth, or sitting still and firing, but next to no tactical driving.

Taser's point (which I agree with) is NCSoft had a long history of overhyping their NA games then killing them if they didn't live up, and ignoring the games that were doing well and could have done better with some clear indicators in the broad market that they were viable and popular.

There were more than a few years in there where WE were the only advertising the game got on a consistent basis, and that doesn't cut it.

Telling you to put some thought into what you say and do and focus your attention on things that might actually work, is not the same as not helping you. It IS helping you, it just happens to be telling you to stop doing what you're doing while you're flailing.

Imagine if at some point the CoH devs had decided to get rid of All the Archetypes except Blasters, Scrappers, and Controllers, and changed the Combat system so it was mouse aiming like a First person shooter.

That's what they did to SWG in a nutshell. 1/4 of the classes left, and a totally new and untried combat system completely the opposite of what had been there before.

Oh, and no new content designed to support it, just system changes.

Just like any of the somewhat pie in the sky "save the game" options out there now, I have very little optimism that any purchase of the game will include the character base intact.

Starting over wouldn't be something I'd want to do.

I've left a game I loved and pretended it no longer existed even though it was still running until last year. I can do it again.
