Fresh from the rumor mill. I am IRL looking to get into the Game Design busness, and have had teachers who are and were in the field. They have connections. I talked with one of them a few minutes ago and this is what one of them told me they heard.
About an hour after the announcement of the end to City of Heroes, SOE and one other game publisher already made a generous bid for the game. Now this does not mean anything, as perhaps NCSoft might not want to sell it for any reasonable price to prevent competition, as they have done so in the past. So I thought I might keep peoples hopes up a little as this MIGHT not be the end. Sorry if this is just purely a rumor as it might. Also equally sorry if the offers, assuming are real, does no bar fruit. Here's Hoping, -MCM |
You are well informed.
SOE was not the only company as other shareholders are also looking into this option or being a backer for a certain someone who trying hard to maintain CoH.
Rumor say little birdies fly everywhere and hum in everyone's ears.

Soon
That would piss me off. I vowed to never give SOE another dollar of my money after SWG, and I won't break that vow.

If it ended up that nobody but SOE made a serious offer, I'd rather they got it than nobody. But I too still remember SWG... I try REALLY hard to remember the good times from that.

IF SOE bought CoH then this would probably include reforming of Paragon Studios too. The problem with that is time. They are already looking for new jobs.

Why blame them solely? Lucas Arts was at least as responsible for the NGE as SOE if not more.

To be honest SOE saving this game would more than square any prior misdeeds IMO.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.
All bets are off for coh, id pay the zetas drug cartel if they saved coh. im a pragmatist.
Yes, but in this economy, I'm afraid they may have a lot of waiting to do :|
Doom.
Yep.
This is really doom.
Oh I know. What I mean is if SOE's offer was the only one NCSoft took seriously, I'd rather NCSoft had one offer they'd consider instead of zero. SOE is evil but I'll take SOE's City of Heroes over the fond memories of City of Heroes any day.
Wait, what?
PLEASE be true!

Just like any of the somewhat pie in the sky "save the game" options out there now, I have very little optimism that any purchase of the game will include the character base intact.
Starting over wouldn't be something I'd want to do.
I've left a game I loved and pretended it no longer existed even though it was still running until last year. I can do it again.

What happened at SWG that has everyone so turned against Sony, anyway?
Doom.
Yep.

It's a question of trust. It's harder to get my trust back than it is to lose it. This wouldn't do it.

Once upon a time, there was a fantastically original and unique game called Star Wars Galaxies, with a skill-based (not class-based) system, pitch black nights, and all kinds of other neat things. Then one day, World of Warcraft came out and SOE decided their game was not enough like it. Then SOE ruined it, the majority of the player base left, and it withered away and died. The end.

That's what they did to SWG in a nutshell. 1/4 of the classes left, and a totally new and untried combat system completely the opposite of what had been there before.
Oh, and no new content designed to support it, just system changes.

The programmers probably won't, depending on how picky they are about location or industry. The skill level required to work there is high, and they're going to be in demand all over the place since software development is a highly transferable skill that will work in many different industries. They're not going to have to wait long unless they insist on trying to stay in the gaming industry or staying local to location (which, to be fair, could both be the case).
Yes, but in this economy, I'm afraid they may have a lot of waiting to do :|

I don't know what the market looks like for the others, unfortunately.

If the character base is lost and I have to start all over, I'm perfectly fine with that. I've been cataloging my characters ever since the news broke. I can understand why some would not want to do that, however, but to me that is a price I would be more than willing to pay. If anything, such an event might strengthen the community in a way - we'd all start together at the bottom, so we'd meet new people we might not have otherwise encountered, and have the chance to grow with a whole new set of friends while still keeping the old.

They went from this: hardly anyone can play a Jedi and those that make it never knew exactly how (most likely required a random roll to keep total numbers low); to this: everyone is a Jedi. Both horrible systems, but, the first system, in absence of Jedis, had a very deep skills, crafting, and role-playing environment which got trampled in the transition. And since they upset the role-playing base for a new system that wasn't any better... pandemonium. Subs dropped dramatically and the game closed down.

Are the people who made the NGE decision still at SOE? If they've moved on, you could choose to think that the company had changed, and offer them a 2nd chance.

It has come to my attention that the rumor I personally started appears to be false. I am sorry, however this does not mean that other companies may be actively looking into the game. This was confirmed by President of SOE, John Smedley's twitter page that they are not attempting to buy the game. I had hoped personally that my information I had gleamed was true, however it appears obviously to not be. Again, I am terribly sorry.
Thank you,

P.S. We might get word as soon as Tuesday! That will be the first full work day since Paragon Studios got canned. So I might get the world's most lucky gaming birthday gift LOL! (I was born on the 4th).
