I've been saying 2012 is just a time frame of change
And lots of change is going on
Aye... I take it all back now.
Tony, you're doing a great thing man. I respect ya greatly.
Fight The Power
Ah well, going to monitor the fan attempt through titan, i cant do much but will do what i can.
COH under Blizzard would not necessary be a good thing. Blizzard has a habit of re-working classes and such at a whim. If they were to get it they would probably dissect the game and redo a new version altogether. Which means we probably wouldn't even see it for a couple of years.
I have to say, right now I am not a huge fan of NCSoft, however I cannot ignore what they have done. If it wasn't for them we would not have the game we are all talking about, they invested a crap-ton of money into Paragon Studios which allowed for them to almost double thier staff and resources, they practically made power customization a reality. Yes right now they suck IMO. However it doesn't automatically undo all the good they did in the past for the game. |
Also, I wouldn't take what Smedly said 100% to heart. He may very well be telling the truth, but I've got an inkling that that sort of thing wouldn't be public knowledge, and that they'd want to keep it that way. May be totally off base with my guess though.
"I have something to say! It's better to burn out then to fade away!"
While I'm not calling Smedley a liar, I've learned that in a lot of cases like these "no" really means "not right now". What he said in that message may have been true at the time he wrote it, but I bet after he hit "send" the thought crossed his mind as something to bring up at their next big meeting. And even if they (SOE) don't go for it, that doesn't mean no one else will, so until the servers go dark in November I'm still hopeful.

That's the $1,000,000 question though. The last financial report was just as Blade and Soul hit in Korea (much less before GW2 hit here). How have they been doing at repaying the investment? Especially with B&S, I've not heard a peep.

about? Because Smedley says Sony did NOT make a bid. So how about you stop with the cryptic hints and come out and say if you actually know anything?

I agree with Feycat. Stop pi$$ing people off with the cryptic horse poop. Either say what you know, or quit needlessly raising people's hopes.

Well, the OP did mention other companies... unfortunately since the SOE part turned out untrue, the other, suspiciously nameless, companies making bids may be bunk as well.
I see a few responses along the lines of "they wouldn't want to queer the deal by telling the truth" so I wanted to be clear. The reason I don't just paste the email verbatim is that I nrver received explicit permission.
However, the relevant quote would be "Never been discussed never going to be discussed."
That IS verbatim. There was no question of hedging. In fact, I exchanged a few emails wiyh Mister Smedley and he was surprisingly forthcoming about his own experiences having to shut down Matrix Online and EQOA. He also expressed his great respect for both City of Heroes and Paragon Studios.
Bottom line: SOE is not in the picture. At all.

I did a lot of thinking about why NCSoft would just close down Paragon Studios without any warning. But if you really think about it, maybe there *was* a warning.
When Apple released Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) in mid July, a warning was posted by Zwillinger to the Mac Users forum that the NCSoft Launcher crashes on some Macs running it. Since then, nobody has been able to contact NCSoft to get a fix for it. It's like the people working on the Launcher for Mac just vanished. As it turns out, they probably did. That clue leads me to believe that in the two months since then, NCSoft has been letting people go because it's so low on cash, it can't make payroll, and can't get a loan to fill the gap. When this past weekend came along, they made the sudden decision that to save the company (NCSoft) and be able to pays its workers, it had to take the money out of the pot feeding Paragon Studios and City of Heroes. Meaning they were all fired, and the game was to be shut down immediately. I can only speculate from that point, somewhat gratefully perhaps, that someone working at Paragon may have begged for leniency for us players, so we would be able to have a chance to say goodbye, and talked NCSoft into giving us 3 months. Some other semi-random thoughts I have about the contents of this thread, some good and some bad: - SOE making a bid for City of Heroes on a holiday weekend sounds more than a little suspiciously like a wishful thinking rumor. If it's real, however, the way it plays out could be interesting. - I would also prefer a smaller studio who would appreciate the smaller profits, or an independent Paragon Studios, but when the ship is sinking, you don't say no to any rescue. - SOE, if it is indeed making a bid, would not spend several million to bury the City of Heroes IP when it's as good as dead already. They could just let NCSoft kill it and bury it for free. - City of Heroes is more likely to be sold by NCSoft than any other title they killed, because it is not originally an NCSoft property, and they don't really want it. They bought it from Cryptic. That means there is no reason for them to try and protect the IP unless they already have a sequel in the works. |

Sigh.
I was afraid of that. 8-(
I suppose there is a chance that Perfect World might consider picking COH up, but from what I hear it's not too likely as they already have CO. Plus side is you'd pick up a bunch of people who aren't going to play CO and don't have to pay to license your own engine. Downside would be having two fingers in the same pie for what I gather is a smallish publisher ...

Talking about SWG reminds me of how EA ruined the very last Command and Coquer game....

General response: Although I loved the idea of an SOE buyout - or any other purchaser, to be honest; as others have mentioned, I would probably do business with the ghost of Saddam Hussein or the Zetas cartel [now there's some real villains for you...] in order to keep playing this game - although I loved that idea, I am not getting my hopes up on that issue until I hear something concrete.
My primary hope right now is that fans can get a fan-run server or servers going, with a mirror-image of the game up. I'd prefer not to have to reroll my alts, but I'll do what I gotta do. I'd love for the game to remain healthy development-wise, with a stable of developers working on it like they used to, but I cant shake the feeling that those days are over. So we may be stuck with the game "as-is" - and I would keep playing.
This whole mess is extremely stressful and I can't believe how attached I am to a bunch of pixels; the whole idea of my main "dying" never to be seen again is like the idea of having to shoot a beloved horse with a broken leg: a horrible thing that one simply is helpless to stop. NO
Being an a-hole wont help you get any more clear answers. What MishiiLove never said the two large companies she is aware off to be SoE.

It's not being an a-hole to demand that someone give out truthful info or none at all.
Also many forget: this weekend was PAX. Any interested party likely was there in the floor perfectly possitioned to do face to face discussions. Mishii may not even know who the large parties are, but have heard about them.

As for the mistery "other shareholders are also looking into this option or being a backer for a certain someone who trying hard to maintain CoH" my guess is some producer from within Paragon Studios is looking for shareholders/investors to back him up in grabbing the game and team back together. I know if I was in their shoes, with contacts out there, I'd be attempting just that.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Any false information or other source of rumour that turns out to be untrue is only going to slow down the genuine efforts to save the game. For that reason, please - let's stop pondering on what anybody might have said to someone one time possibly about whether they may or may not be thinking about perhaps maybe one day picking the kids up from school or whatever.
FACTS, people. Concentrate on FACTS. If you have a rumour you think you can prove, check your sources and either prove or debunk it, then let us know. We can't work with anything else, indeed, concentrating on maybes will only slow us down.
