WW - many thanks for standing up and putting yourself forward carrying the blue flag with the stars in a circle on it. If a book had been running on which redname was to step forward into the ever decreasing pack of rabid EU wolves, then you would have been a very heavily backed favourite!

We await your update once your investigations have concluded.

Thank you very much for posting here War Witch. Just by simply stating "I'm working on it" goes a long way to restoring my faith in our redname community. As a long time subscriber and player of the game, I want to carry on doing so but I, along with many other people, have become rather concerned over what the future holds for us in the EU.

So thanks again for posting, it's very much appreciated.

Just adding to the thanks WW Even a "not yet" is enough for the majority of us i'ld like to think, least something is being done

That being said, question time!

  • Do you like only fools and horses?
  • Your favourite drink?
  • Is starbucks on every street corner over there as it is over here?
All vital need to know questions

Edit: A tenner says we get a lot more people posting here now that WW did

Thank you for the reply War Witch, and let me add my voice in saying that if I expected any Redname to pop in on this subject it would be you after all you are our favourite dev (and the only one to personally appear for us).

I look forward to hearing what you find out.

Devin Townsend, Rush, War Witch....of course Canadians are awesome, and no I'm not biased because I have family there, didn't even factor into it. *starts whistling*

And to keep it a little bit on track: tis appreciated when a redname takes note, even if it's just to say: "Erm, yeah, hang on a sec: I'll go find out"

So why isn't someone from marketing or publishing here to answer the questions?

Why isn't Customer Relations handling this as the go-between, which is their job? Why isn't EMpulse, who is head of Customer Relations here handling this? Why doesn't she even have her PMs enabled?

It seems that Paragon Studios is still divided Cryptic v. NCSoft, i.e., developers v. publishers. Developers interact, publishers only reluctantly react to outright problems (such as connectivity issues through a support ticket). Why can't the NCSoft publishing arm actually communicate with the player base like the developers do?

We've had Jack Emmert and Matt Miller talk to us, why can't Bryan Clayton?

^^^OMG...THIS!^^^

Zombie has hit it on the head I think. I agree that marketing as a whole sucks and we should get a helluva lot more press for this game. (Maybe when GR comes out??) But this really bothers me to think that our Devs, even the biggest ones at the top, have the time and put forth the effort to answer our questions, but the guys in suits are...what exactly? Getting their nails done?

Thank you War Witch. This is why we love you, well I love you.

Zombie man & AmazingMoo did have a few good questions, its weird that in the end it is the (beloved) Devs that have to reply and the men/woman in the black suit (in the dark room with ... umm War Witch, do they have a white cat/kittens?) and suitcases remain silent.

But that you are asking the questions and did give us a little answer was better then nothing.

*Prepares a box of chocolate* Umm... what kind of chocolate do you like best War Witch?

My guess is that the developers are a lot crazier than the publishers.

Even among the developers, we actually see only a tiny percentage of them, and they are all obviously nuts for putting up with us. Perhaps the publishers feel a need to maintain a certain professional distance from the playerbase because they more than the devs determine the mechanics of what we the playerbase ultimately gets and how.

There is a certain freedom the devs must feel to be able to always say "well, that's what I think but ultimately its not my decision." Its a lot different when it actually *is* your decision and you have to confront a large heterogeneous and not always friendly audience. Publishers ultimately control resources and deadlines: I would not envy someone in charge of resources and deadlines that was asked to take questions from the forums.

Personally, I think communication to that side of the house could be a lot better. But I think the fact that we have far more contact with the development side than the publishing side says more about the devs than the publishers. In many games you have direct contact with neither to any significant degree. But here, like I said, the devs are insane.

Releasing the Box set to the EU, and maybe putting the going rogue trailer up on EU TV could boost the EU player base by a huge number, i believe if it had the right support, with going rogue CoX could be a contender with the other big MMO's in the EU like WoW.

So why not even bother to try and boost the player base, they have just given up before they even started, which i think is pretty pathetic personally...

[EDIT]

Out of blind rage (well y'know kinda) i didn't read past the 4th or 5th post. So i didn't see War witches post.

Cheers War Witch for loving Europe so much /e thumbs up I persoanlly can't see any good reason why they wouldn't even ship the box to the EU concidering over 50% of new subscribers must come from people who buy the game from a shop where they can actually see what they're getting, rather than edgily typing their credit card details into a wed site and downloading (viruses AHHH) the game from the internet, which as we all know is such a loving a reliable tool.

A long time ago we had a teacher who ran a game during her class for everyone over a certain percentage of points, picking from a list of chocolate bars. Whoever guessed the bar she'd brought in that day got one. While looking at the picks, I noticed the wrapper for a Mars bar. I'd never had one, so I picked it. I didn't win, but I was pretty confident. As long as I picked it again and again, it'd come up and I'd get to try it.

So I did. For the entire school year.

It never came up once. When I brought it up with the teacher at the graduation ceremony, she told me there wasn't anywhere to buy mars bars nearby.

Since then, I've always thought that the mars bar was some sort of bitter conspiracy against me. I don't think they sell them in America, or call them Milky Ways, or something. The wikipedia page isn't quite clear.

From what I can see, NCSoft's marketing for CoH appears to happen largely by accident. I've heard NCSoft Marketing referred to as a 'silent black pebble' recently. Just last night I mentioned to some friends that NCSoft's marketing department exists solely to hide the existence of City of Heroes from the world at large.

Surely this isn't the case. Someone must buy things like booth space at the various cons and do box art and the like. However, unlike the development decisions for the game, which are largely very transparent to players, marketing is such a closed book that we see stuff like EU players getting reamed or the oddity of pre-ordering a package, but not the item pack and wonder what the hell must be going on.

Crap shovel-ware console games get TONS more exposure and care than one of the more successful MMOs in the business. How does this happen?
This is the most TRUE thing I have read in a while. I say pull a Rhode Island on the crew.

Actually...it's Coffee Crisp.

Here's the strange part: I hate coffee (as you all probably know). I don't know, that little Nestle bar just makes my taste buds happy.

1. *laughs* No. In fact, I don't think I even have a broom at home. I probably do, but I never touch it. That means housework.

2. The list is long and varied, but during a school basketball game, just after half time, I got the ball, broke from the pack, ran with it (fine, I dribbled with it), and went for a layup. Missed. Went again. Missed. Team-mate walks up to me, yanks the ball away from me, and says, "Wrong hoop, dork."

3. Television. He's got this amazing wit that just slips out of this very serene person. Just hysterical. He makes us all laugh every day.

4. Nice try. :P

5. I have read every Sookie Stackhouse novel (so far). So I don't know if my love is on par with your love, but I do like the books.

POSSIBLE SPOILER:

I hope she ends up with Eric - he always had that "I hate him, no wait, he lost his memory - whhaaaaat he's a good guy?, no wait, he's a bad guy...I hate him, but I KNOW he can be reformed!!" vibe about him.

Okay, I was going to ask what you're doing up so early (or late), but your recent Ask A Dev responses make it clear that you get up at stupid o'clock, so that question's pretty much a bust...

We know that with the (effective) closure of the NC offices in Brighton, the EU community team is now based in your neck of the woods, and that undoubtedly puts a severe crimp on things, but I have to ask if there is any likelihood of NC doing any events in Europe again?

Oh, and as for Omega Sektor (since you asked) - they went out of business and closed down, which was probably the harshest thing, since it was such a great venue for gaming events in the UK.

Silly question time (since you've taken the time to poke your nose into our secret lair):

What's the funniest thing you've wanted to include in CoH that you've not been able to do so far, and now that you have the lead design role, do you think you'll be able to sneak it in?

What's the most exciting thing you know is coming that we can't hear the details of yet? (Be as cryptic as you like with an answer)

What's the most exciting thing coming that we can hear the details of?

Do you ever get a chance to get in game and just play it? How often? Ever considered using an EU account to sneak on at lunchtime to have a peek at what's going on?

In a similar vein, if you do play the game as a player (and no, I'm not going to ask silly things like your global name), have you a) played many Architect story arcs? b) written an architect story arc, published it and had it rated?

What's the most "Oh, that would be so cool!" thing you can remember in the game's history that has actually appeared?

What's the most "Oh, that would be so cool!" thing that hasn't appeared?

Now, I know that there was recently your Ask A Dev slot, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, since you're here, and we've kidnapped you (and I didn't actually spot the ask a dev until it was too late).

And FPATMARNOTF, again. We must stop meeting like this.

I hate raw or cooked tomatos, yet love tomato sauce and cheese and tomato pizza.

I also hate marmite, yet love twiglets (European snack thing which has marmite in it)
Life is odd at times

On a slightly more serious note, I would agree with those decrying the Marketing dep. Whatever job they are doing, I honestly cant say I've seen any of its results. Which is worrying.

Thank you War Witch for listening to our gripes.

I think I speak for a great number of us EU players. We have no problem with the Devs they are doing a grand job more power to you all

But we are worried about what the faceless ones have in store for us. But it doesn't seem to include increasing the player base

But on a more light hearted note am I the only one to notice how the mood has changed once WW posted

I think we EU player think of you as our champion (and have done for many years)
