There's no reason for that kind of behavior in this, or any other, game.

Wonder what you'd do if some idiot got on his high horse about your choice of activities during an event.
Uh, it wasn't like he just did it once in Broadcast, he was doing it repeatedly. Other's were trying to get teams together and co-ordinate actions, and he was doing this, cloging up the Broadcast channel.

Also, how is it cowadice?

And as to my choice of activites during an event, if I don't want to do them I sure won't berate others who are trying to do them, or decide to insist that others do other things.

That's a bit... inconsistent.

Now for something constructive. Hellfrost Demons. We rarely (never?) see them on blueside. If you scaled a few up in size, they could make some interesting Guardians in place of the rather boring and overdone Snowmen, at least for blueside. I don't know how common they are over there. But you guys hate redside anyway, right?

Also, in place of a present, what if the Winter Lords dropped crystals (like the +recovery ones on CoT maps)? It'd be more of a "Whoops, I dropped this as I fled from a face mashing" than a "Come and get me heroes". It would also look wintery and not be confused with a regular present if someone was speeding by or flying overhead.

Pretty uncommon. They only exist in certain level ranges, and most people avoid Circle anyway.

I'm not sure demons are the best unit for winter events. But it might be nice to fight a giant Frosty with a top hat and carrot nose. Something different than Snowlump #41032 anyway.

Sounds about right to me. I'll run it for my badge toon and then avoid it unless one of my SG mates needs it.

Smacking around Frostlings, Blights, and Snow Beasts in the Winter Realm gives you Candy Canes as well, it seems.

Did have to wonder why the graphics occasionally went all grey (not unlike being in Dark Astoria, actually), even with my graphics settings maxed out as usual.

Other amusing notes - new emote that can be purchased for candy canes at the Ski Chalet - /em snowflakes - you toss snowflakes in the air to a soft jingling bells sound. Pretty.

New badge - Festive (for logging in during the event). As usual, you can buy the earlier holiday event badges for candy canes in the Ski Chalet.

New amusement - you can now WALK down the ski slope (at roughly 4x normal speed), and it seems there's now a full bar at the bottom of the ski slope, plus Port O Potties!

I also have experienced my graphics going all gray, but it was during flashback missions. It happens when I first step on the map, and then again as soon as the mission requirements have been met. I figured it was a new feature they were trying out?

Not like that, Maleficent. The sepia-tone changes when doing flashback missions is natural, and has been part of the game since I-11 came out.

It turns out that it happened whenever Lord Winter phased out, which was graphically represented by the world greying out, which a lot of people have complained about.

Did anybody poke around Galaxy to see if it was spawning the right level of presents? Last year, it was spawning level 6-10, as opposed to level 1-5 snowmen.

I believe someone did and it seemed to be fixed this year.

Does the selection from
Candy Keeper include the halo and flaming halos from previous winter events? I need those costume parts for some of my characters recently created!

From the posts I have read, yes they do.

In other words, this was removed from the game for good reasons. Ignoring them for this event is poor, and will degrade the event significantly for those who hated this mechanic the first time(s) around.
Agreed. I can't stand powers that cause detoggles. I'd prefer to see something like suppressing those toggles for 15 seconds or something.

I don't object to the added difficulty, I object to the annoyance factor-- it feels like they are attacking my user interface, not my character.

This is seriously disappointing, but I get the feeling that may very be the case...
If they don't change this ASAP its gonna be a really crappy Winter Event IMHO.

Especially if the BNY mission doesn't award 5 Candy Canes as an option in the reward choices.
Unless, they have some other new mission that they're "hiding" for now - so as not to 'spoiler' it (maybe?)

This whole, "Fight Reichs-Snowman and 3 recycled Winter GM's" for 6 Merits, sounds like serious 'sucky-cide'. I'm betting that (unless they change it significantly) its gonna go over like a dead puppy in your stocking on Christmas morning.
Even 8 or 10 Merits AND 'basket' of 40-50 Candy Canes would make this - only slightly more appealing - than the "Supernatural Activity" part of the Halloween Event.
I mean a Medium Inspiration as a Reward?, yeah right... /em spit

And, while heaven only knows how sick to death I am of the BNY mission...(Specifically = Snaptooth and his redcap cronies!)
I'd still rather run that over and over to get Candy Canes/Badges for my badger-toons, costume parts for alts that they'd fit on, etc. Over trying to find/form/join multiple teams to "Defeat Reichs-Snowman".

Even considering the fact that my aging graphics card was already having overheating issues last year - with the graphics/textures maybe(?) on that kinda "frozen world" map, while soloing - but the idea of running with 2-3 teams? *shudder*

Note: No, I can't afford to get a new PC yet, (and IMO) its a bad time to do so right now until Nvidia catches up to ATI, Intel decides to stick with a compatible socket (or AMD catches up), man I hate the AMD/ATI thing (especially when it comes to CoH/CoV - who knows what will really be the best to run the game on after the upgrade in GR?), & until Windows 7 has been out a bit longer.
Also, just to head people off at the pass... No - I can't upgrade my current rig. Its a 5yr old SFF PC, and 'Small Form Factor' = I just barely squeezed in all the components when I built it.
Yeah I've looked into it, I could swap-out the 2 kickass 512MB sticks of RAM I have with 2 higher latency (much more generic) 1MB sticks.
That's not enough to justify the expense - when I'm looking to build a (full tower this time) whole new PC "Soon™".

Oops, Sorry about the upgrading rant... Uhm, its almost 'shopping season'... So, yeah that makes it relevant to the Winter Event! (kinda-sorta)

So, (Back to the topic) - UNLESS they make some serious changes to this mess.
I foresee a whole buncha "Present-clicking & WL minion defeating" for Candy Canes. And almost nobody bothering to mess with the "Lord of Winter" thing, at least not more than once with each of their "main badgers", & the detoggling B.S. would practically guarantee this...

What is with these (dare I say WoW-ish style) Event Raids?
If I wanted to have to gather 40 people (or even 3x8=24) to accomplish things I'd be playing WoW or some other similar game!
NO, I'm not gonna quit, heck I'm paid up thru next November & signed up/agreed to be billed for another 14 months after that! But I still reserve the right to be ticked-off about stuff from time to time...

Being in Australia and so usually playing 'off-peak' I only managed to do the banner event on a couple of my characters, as after the first weekend there were not enough interested people online to form even a single team of 8 (and that was blueside) so if this needs 3 teams it's just going to be a non-event as far as I'm concerned.

But I do really enjoy these zone-wide events when I can get on a team, so it would be good if it could be fixed to allow a single team of 8 a reasonable chance. I know it's a difficult balancing act, it was annoying that one of the few times I was on a team for the banner event the GM was defeated before any of my team got to his location.

De-toggling also sounds a really annoying feature, it's bad enough that the de-toggling on entry/exit to missions seems to be happening again on a regular basis.

Cardiff_Giant, I think you are on to something here. What if these new multi-team zone-wide events are an attempt to woo players from 'other' games where this sort of thing is commonplace? If so, I personaly think it will be a failure. Especially since, as others have said, this is a niche game, and many of those players would not do well in COH.

I also believe that someone has looked at the Rikti and Zombie events and tried to "make them better". The problem is that those events are better because they are scalable to the zone population at the given time they are on.

IMHO, good quality content and stable playability will win the day, not any "Oooo...look, we have a nicer shiny than that game over there." attitude. (Unfortunately, there will always have to be some of the latter to deal with a segment of the general gamer playerbase.)

I really enjoyed last years xmas event, and was looking forward to it again.

These change distract from that enjoyment.

It seems the reward for the xmas event is minor to prvent farming, but the cost of the respec and other candy cane purchases are based on reward times due to grinding lots of candy canes.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

What changes in particular detract from the enjoyment? Nothing was taken away from last year's event (as far as I can tell) so you can do exactly the same things you did last year with the same results. Enjoyment!

There are also *new* things. Which you might not enjoy. As far as the cost of the candy cane respec...of course it's expensive. Have you seen the costs of respec recipes on WW? You don't want to buy one? Run a respec TF.

Feedback:

For the play test that I was on tonight, in my opinion, the present rate needs to be raised. With the small amount of villains present in Cap, I spent quite a while looking, I can only imagine that this will be worse during peak live times.

The timer on entering the winter lord realm is a little long, but I guess that is to allow no travel power lowbies to cross a zone if needed. I got quite a workout doing push-ups

Low pop servers are going to have a bit of trouble in the winter Lords realm during non peak times.

I liked it!

Several of us were kicked back well outside the map of Steel when the WL zone timed out. My location: 2468.2 -2000.0 1500.3. /bugged in-game for extra info if needed; I don't believe I moved (well, other than falling at first).

Take 2, with raptor pack pre-fired for accurate 3D location: 2275.5 87.8 1343.8. I started in the far SE corner of the WL domain, on the tiny sliver of ice lake right up against the SE corner.

Take 3, raptored, far NW corner, starting pos 2719.0 92.3 945.0, exit pos 2312.8 32.7 1235.5. Starting facing about NW, exit facing about SW.

On the test event for 11-18-2009 in trying to get to the second WinterLord Domain instance the only portal that showed for me was the Magic Portal not the Winterlord Domain portal. I also had TWO "Build Snowbeast Power" rewards form clicking presents.

Posted

Is the ability to travel from Winter Lord Realm 1 to Realm 2 intended? It allowed many of us to enter the realm and fight a second Lord Winter, scoring the additional rewards for doing so.

Two things to /bug, then comments/thoughts. I filed a less detailed bug report in game about each of these, but providing more detail here.

1. I was the team leader on my blaster and received a tell asking for an invite. I sent an invite but got a message " You cannot make a co-op team unless all teammates are on the same map." I thought possibly it was someone that hadn't yet zoned in from Steel Canyon, so waited a bit and sent again but got the same message. I sent a reply tell of the error I was getting and they said they were on the map attacking Lord Winter. I sent the invite again with the same results, so asked what AT they were on and was told MM. They could see my comment about how much room was on the team in broadcast which is how they got my name to send me the initial tell asking for an invite. If we are going to be fighting the same Lord Winter in the same zone, shouldn't we be able to invite players of the opposing faction to our team?

2. We stayed in the second instance fighting the Snow Beasts, Frostlings, etc after defeating LW the second time, and the timer ran out. Once it got to 0 it started counting up. I saw it reach 8 seconds when it zoned me out. That is where the problems hit. I was zoned to a location under the map. My mini-map showed I was in Steel Canyon, but I was hovering under the map. Those that didn't have hover on were falling. My /loc at the time was 2460.4 2.8 1494.3 and I am bolding and coloring this to make it easy to spot for Ghost Falcon or whoever to find it.

Now, for the comments/thoughts.

I loved the comment on the Admin channel from Evil Falcon and got a bit of a chuckle from it. Those that saw it know what it was, but I'm not sayin'.

I was a bit late getting in and the present was already on the map. The blue dot marker made it very easy to find, and I had plenty of time to fly across Steel Canyon to get to the present from the Yellow line. The present was just below the Green line, so that meant I covered most of the length of the map. Once I got there, I still had plenty of time before the present was click-able to enter LW's Realm.

I didn't get de-toggled during either fight with LW, which was a pleasant surprise. I was also able to stay alive the entire fight and wasn't constantly getting agro coming from the mobs between the Guardian fights and back to LW.

Since I was late, I'm not sure if a change was made that we needed to defeat LW twice to get the badge, but I didn't see a message after defeating him in the first instance, so I'm just assuming this is one of the changes.

It seemed as if this would have been easier on a lower level character than the previous test, but since I don't have anything very low level on the test server it's hard to tell. It may also be easier on the lower population servers, but the only way to really test that will be to have a single team try it, then have two teams try it, then three teams try it, etc. until we get enough hard data to find out for certain how smaller numbers of players fare against it.

Unfortunately, I have previously made plans for the evening, so can't stick around for more testing to try it with lower numbers of players.

One other oddity, now that I'm thinking about it. I saw someone mention this during the fight in the second LWR instance, and almost forgot about it. During the fight in the first instance of the zone, I didn't get the FOG effect when LWR called the Guardian, but did get it during the second instance. This was each time he called the Guardian, not just a single time. Was it supposed to call in the FOG during both instances? If it was, I and some others didn't see it during the first instance.

Overall, this seemed to flow much smoother than the previous test.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.
