Disappointed
You expected more, but I think the majority, as of now, is pretty happy.
Can't the pessimism wait a few more months?
I agree with Sigium.
Really, with the limited information they have share, its a little hard for me to understand why you're being so critical. Seeing as how they mentioned that yes, you will still be able to run the game with lower graphics settings that appear like they do now, why so upset over the reflections and shadows? You don't HAVE to run it with the "eye candy."
I personally can't wait to see more goodies that are in store for us!
Yes its eye candy, everybody loves it. But ask yourself how many players play the game now with the graphic settings turned to minimum. And how many players play it on a laptop ? A lot. In my opinion it is a very nice feature but definitely not a needed one and even more not one that will add to gameplay.

Firstly, City is starting to show its age, so a graphics update is probably at least a good move, if not, in a competitive environment, a must. You don't care about graphics? Okay. But do you care about finding teams? Do you care about having a vibrant, active community?
You said it yourself: "everybody loves it." Well, let's hope so. If that eye candy helps to keep people engaged, that's ultimately good for everyone. Including you.
Secondly, whether or not it adds to gameplay is up to each player to decide for themselves. I'd say it depends on how important someone considers immersion to be. Personally, I consider it to be very important indeed. And greater visual depth of the environment will, for me, impact gameplay quite a bit.
Finally, all of this is optional, which I find to be a thoughtful touch. It may not be adding anything to your experience, but it's not going to take away from it either (in theory). Even if you don't care about graphics--heck, even if you don't pick up the expansion at all--as a participant, you still stand to benefit from all of this.

Just a quick note to the ones bad repping me.
All I`m saying is that the big fuss aboud graphics and how I am going to impress my friends (how they say in the vid : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SItM3OLqb5w) by showing the how kool this game looks is not impressing me. A personal opinion. I acknowledge that it is a big graphic upgrade to the game.
On a side note I am waiting for their recommended requirements for those graphics and then will wait for what people in beta will have to say about their systems handling those graphics while doing a rwz raid or hami raid, or while in a team of 8 with mobs and their shadows running around near water and their team mates with their dynamic shadows.
Again it looks amazing but from experience I know that those nifty things cost A LOT of $ to have them at reasonable fps.
Definately not whining, but honestly I expected to see pretoria inc. but also some costume parts (other than that set), a new AT and some damn travel powers. Stuff to play with not stuff to look at.
My only beef would be the powersets...
I understand this is an "expansion" but what will be the cost of this product?
If it's 20 bucks, sure I might actually buy it (since I bought a new PC and my video card could support the new graphics)
But anything more, neh, I'll wait til it does lower, cause I'd expect more powersets then just 2 (what happened to ball & chain? or growth? why not add those?)
It's gonna be awesome to see this game change from a standard game to high def, but I'd like to see more creativity for me to build new charactors on, that's what makes me want to play this game mostly.
Well that's my lil rant, but I'll wait to see what's instore to make a bigger choice.
But I expected gameplay, innovations towards teaming, task forces, more goals for solo players, new mission types and other things to keep you playing through the content and make you forget what power leveling means. |
Now I'm all for new mission types and dynamic choices objectives but we're talking about the *Art Department*. There's only so much you can do with drawing skills and rendering programs. Those responsible for story arcs and game missions were probably busy appeasing those crying for side switching to keep up with your ever ballooning need of game features you feel entitled to.
Is it so hard to just look at the options they're giving us and pick the ones you'll take and *not* moan about the other stuff you won't?

today was the first day of a two day event describing a expansion several months down the road. Do you really think this was all that is going to be in gr? REALLY?
Arc #40529 : The Furies of the Earth
wondering if the big finale for hero con 2night will be a sneak peak at i17?
This is a bit like turning to God on the first day of Creation, when all He's gotten to so far is parting the water from the land and establishing the whole day/night thing, and saying, "Frankly, I was expecting better." And that's the butt-kicking Old Testament God, so He'd probably do some smiting. At the very least you'd get a big, thunderous, booming "Wait for it... !"
About the only thing I was disappointed about was not seeing dynamic lights. Everything else was pure gold. And, really, considering how little information we have about... Well, anything, it seems to me like it's too early to be disappointed. It's like being disappointed about a movie you heard about from a friend whose girlfriend saw a trailer of it on the TV in the local bar and grill.
Until I see what the expansion is like by reading the actual patch notes and logging into it (which I hope to do in Beta), I won't really know, because all we have now is hints.

What was shown was everything the PR department would allow, and of course the things that will make the most number of people sit back and go WOW!
We still don't know what percentage of new features/content/QOL were in the details revealed, nor do we know how crucial the efforts being put into GR will be to any future updates.
While it's possible that GR will not bring much that you want to the table, perhaps there are systems developed in GR that will allow additions you really desire to be implemented in Issue 18(rumored to be kickass) or Issue 20.
I personally can't see a downside to the developers putting money into the COX universe, and if purchasing the expansion keeps my favorite game going a few more years, I'll gladly pay for a new box every couple of years.
EDIT to add ...
About the only thing I was disappointed about was not seeing dynamic shadows.
|
The video did show dynamic shadows cast by buildings/trees/characters/npcs all changing with TOD, but nothing from mission interiors etc.
Do you mean shadows from sources other than the sun?

I'll go edit my previous post.

I'm still a bit concerned about what '1-20' means. Like a lot of people I was really hoping that GR would have at least as much depth as CoV. I still have my fingers crossed though since it would seem like a waste to put all this effort into Praetoria only for it to be some 1-20 zones and then nothing until the level 50 TFs or whatever the new end game turns out to be.
On the other hand whether or not I can actually run the ultra mode graphics I can only see that upgrade as a good thing, as a sign that NCSoft are committed to CoH in the long term and ready to compete with newer flashier games.
Good graphics sells games. Good gameplay keeps people playing. If they can combine both then it'll be good to see CoH holding its own in the MMO market in the years to come.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
So pretty much, the word of the day in terms of graphics update is "Reflection". WHICH in order to enjoy at a reasonable level in any modern game requires a massive combo of GPU,CPU and RAM. Basically you need a high-end computer. Otherwise it will cause graphic lag. Yes its eye candy, everybody loves it. But ask yourself how many players play the game now with the graphic settings turned to minimum. And how many players play it on a laptop ? A lot. In my opinion it is a very nice feature but definitely not a needed one and even more not one that will add to gameplay.

Man, I can't wait to roll up my new DP Blaster "Narcissus" and just sit in Silver Lake until I auto-logout
1:40, roughly:
"...at least, the stuff we can talk about."
IE: More info later. This is not all of it.
Just do what i do with any new issue, expansion, game etc
First Look/Basic info etc-->Second Look/some more info/trailer-->Third Look/looking at everything thats been mentioned again---> final look/Playing the actual thing.
that line is how i comment and judge something
first look--> Awesome cant wait
Second Look--> nice new features, look forward to this, waits for more info, before judging some more, including commenting on bad things, if any
Final Look--> N/A at this stage.
A "high end" computer in this case is about $700 worth of parts (less by the time the game debuts).
We're talking about a whopping:
- AMD Phenom II X2 3Ghz: $90
- Motherboard: $100
- Case and PSU: $140
- 6GB DDR3 RAM: $120
- nVidia GTX : $170
- BOO-YAH! : Your computer vastly exceeds minimum specs and you'll be able to turn on UGM without missing a beat. Rock out with your...reflections...out.
- BOO-WHA? : Your computer exceeds the minimum specs, but you may have to turn down the resolution a notch or two to keep framerate acceptable. Rock out with your...slightly lower resolution reflections...out.
- BOO! : Your computer base platform is fine but you may need to upgrade your graphics card to play in UGM. On the upside, you can play in regular graphics mode until you can afford the upgrade.
- BOO-OW! : Your computer is going to need several upgrades besides just the graphics card (upgraded PSU, more memory, slightly more powerful processor). Again, you can play in regular mode until you can save up the cash for the upgrade.
- BOO-HOO! : You basically need to replace your computer completely to get UGM. Again, you can still play in regular mode until you can save up.
- BOO-HOO-HOO! : You need to replace your system completely to get UGM. But you're dead broke, unemployed, on a minimum wage job, your parents pay for your CoX addiction, or you're a mutant who generates a cash-repulsion field somewhere in the exapascal range. Well, nothing is stopping you from playing in regular graphics mode.
- BOOM! : Your computer blew up and all the conditions pertaining to "BOO-HOO-HOO!" apply to you. Well, in this one, solitary case, you're BONED.
$20 a week (watch a DVD instead of going to the movies, buy the cheap gas, eat ramen instead of ordering a pizza, read a book instead of going out and getting fecal-faced (pointedly NOT looking at a certain server), etc).
- In 8 weeks of this, those who just need to upgrade their video cards are set.
- In 13-15 weeks, those who need vidcard + 1 component (RAM/PSU/CPU) are set.
- And by release date, those who need to replace their system with something that'll play it in UGM can.
- Those who're too broke to do as prescribed above can STILL play in normal graphics mode.
But ask yourself how many players play the game now with the graphic settings turned to minimum. And how many players play it on a laptop ? A lot. |
In my opinion it is a very nice feature but definitely not a needed one and even more not one that will add to gameplay. |
Dynamic Shadows. THIS is what actually made me open this thread. Seeing the crowd going all WHOAAAAA. |
Well, that, and a bunch of our people are unabashed hams of the first order.
First of all, dynamic shadows were first implemented in a game as a gameplay feature in 2004 (Thief: Deadly Shadows). In this game, I couldn`t care less about them. But they`re as old as CoX itself. |
For me , all this graphic update is not something that I wanted or expected and definitely not a reason to buy/pre-order the game. I do admit it is a major graphic improvement for the game itself and I am also very curious how much a laptop will cost at the moment of release with the recommended specs (which are not released yes as far as I know) |
As to the rest, I'm not suitably moved by it just yet. Maybe if I'd been sitting in the audience, I'd have been more wowed.
About the only real forehead slapper I have is the decision to STILL not merge the markets. If anything, this is an ongoing issue of stubborn boneheadedness of grotesquely monumental proportions.
Yes. Not very disappointed but I`m definitely not impressed.
I`ll try to explain piece by piece why.
Ultra-graphics mode: toggle for better graphics
Imperfections of glass
Realistic environmental +character reflections
Realistic shadows that change with time of day
Reflective Water
Water reflection distorts shadow
Costume is reflective
Minimum specs for the game won't change, and you can run Going Rogue without Ultra mode, but you can turn on Ultra mode with high-end video cards

For Blasters, Defenders, and Corruptors
Four types of bullets, selectable at character creation: Regular, Ice, Fire, Toxic (need confirmation on these)
Each type of ammo changes the secondary effect of the attacks
Has a PBAoE attack of some sort
Heroes become Vigilantes
Villains become Rogues
Vigilantes and Rogues have access to the Rogue Isles and Paragon City
Vigilantes can only access Wentworth's, and Rogues can only access the Black Market
Your morality is determined by Praetorian morality arcs
All Rogues and Vigilantes would eventually leave Praetoria and go into the Rogue Isles/Paragon (with access to both)
Also we have a revamp of the first 20 levels in terms of gameplay. And 50`s will become even more powerful. Stuff worth waiting for.
I expected more. Well maybe its the preliminary news and they weren`t allowed to say that many things. But I expected gameplay, innovations towards teaming, task forces, more goals for solo players, new mission types and other things to keep you playing through the content and make you forget what power leveling means.
I`m still expecting this before being fully disappointed and moving towards another game. Yes the first 20 levels being revamp is good (supposably, because we don`t know what that means exactly), but that leaves us with 50 more levels of the same TF's, mission maps and goals.
I know most of you don`t agree with my but this is just my humble opinion about Going Rogue and what I expected to hear about it.
