Admittedly the rest of the train laughed and applauded, I probably should feel bad about it but why, oh why, do you lot have one of your many accents where everything ends in a question, IT MAKES ME WANT TO STRANGLE YOU IN YOUR SLEEP!

For some reason the Australia accent that does the same bizzarely has no effect on me.
Never fear, you are not alone in your facepalming. This very-Southern very-American has cringed mightily in the grocery store at hearing someone ask where the "Wor-ches-ter-shire" sauce might be found.

That is a pretty valid point. You sir, get +1 rep for that.

I've faint memories of that changing in early/mid '80s when the price of a gallon kept crossing £2 (I think it was £2 - it was some whole number of pounds anyway).

Whether it was the official reason or not, it always struck me that the change to litres was a cynical marketing ploy to make the price look more affordable - much as a retailer may sell something for £199.99 rather than £200.

Sometimes it's just as bad in this country (Scotland)

There are a couple of towns (or city districts in one case) here where the name doesn't anywhere near match how it's pronounced.

Milngavie - MULL-GUY

&

Strathaven - STRAY-VEN

Even I find this odd.

But yes, spelling is a quirky regional thing. There's the proper English language with the right spelling and then there's the US way of doing things.

But, on the plus side, if you want to violently rant against someone's opinion now, you can completely ignore any points they make and just point and laugh about the extra 'u' in the words.

I wish I were joking.

You also forgot the "to red up"="to clean" which i presume derives from "to make ready" but frankly the influence of the different cultures that collided in the steel mills created a polish/german/slovak/irish/dutch gumbo of loanwords that would defy the most dedicated etymologist. but the Brits can't get a good pirogi or gob-cake, so there :P

Perhaps, good sir, you would take some comfort in the words of Mr. Taylor Mali

Y'know, that brings up a question I've always wondered what the reason behind was.

Why is it litre (centre, etc) in Canada/UK, but liter (center, etc) in the US? Why the flip?

I love the router rooter "discussion".

An American in an English owned company (which is in turned owned by Swedish company) leads to quite a few word "discussions".

Oh, don't worry, it bothers the crap out of Americans too. It's not so much of an accent as it is a sign of utter stupidity.

As for crazy place names, try Michilimackinac on for size. That's always a fun one.

Just a mild point...with 300 million americans to our meagre 60 million brits, you have 5 times as many people. And you still managed to vote bush in.

I don't think americans can really judge other nations for intellect or the use of the original english language. I believe the most commonly used phrase ever spoken to any american by any other nation is 'shut up'.

'Restroom' is my personal favourite.

"Excuse me, where's the restroom?"

"What? The 'restroom'? You tired or something? You wanna lie down?"
