It's COLOR and ARMOR!
Tell me, what kind of reaction would I have gotten with "hi, I'm Randy, can you help me?"

Umm.. Since when have hot dogs had ANYthing to do with meat?

If you get what they are trying to say... Then WHY does it matter?

However, in some cases, small trips in spelling can turn an otherwise simple statement into something else completely.
Spelling is important enough that at least a token effort should be made.
The same thing goes for formatting (see "Wall of text" and "punctuation is your friend").
Then again, there's the additional argument about how thoroughly thought through an idea is and how much effort you've taken to convey it.
As far a former President Bush is concerned, I do believe the BRIT Prime Minister had his nose stuck so far up our Pres. rear end that he couldn't see the light of day.
'It's' not "color" or "colour". It's both, mate.
Besides, I would much rather see basic competence with spelling and grammar *than* quibble over American or British localisations.
(Observant readers will note the emphasis on 'than', a potent and noble word that appears to be slipping from many a forum-goer's vocabulary. I.e. it's "greater/less *than* X" NOT "greater/less *then* X".)
I'd also rather see more respect for language in general; it really takes no more time or effort to write "thanks" than "thx".
Language is one of the desperately few things that separate us from the other animals (manners being another). Let's lend it a modicum more respect.
i hav no idea wur ur talkin bout so herez a bunny wit a pancake on its hed:
Maths?
No, no, no, "math" doesn't take an s. Oh, and while I'm here: neither does "horsepower". |
BTW Jeremy Clarkson, you can shove it up your butt! GT500's do INDEED produce 500 HORSEPOWER! and for MY'10 its 540!
ohhhh...ummm....yeah. A little to much coffee maybe...
------->"Sic Semper Tyrannis"<-------
Mathematics condenses to 'Maths.'
Mathematic condenses to 'Math.' There is no such thing as a 'Mathematic' class. Nobody is well-versed in 'Mathematic.' Correct this discrepancy immediately. Thank you. |
Do I hear scoffing? Start thinking about spelling and pronunciation, just the ones you use in your own country (whatever one that is). Try applying reason. I'll wait here with the anti-psychotics.
This thread is hilarious - I am surprised it took so long to spawn!
I am English but have ALWAYS played on the US servers and the funny thing is I adopted the American way of spelling - my whole SG are English players and we have all either consciously or subconsciously dropped our 'u's and changed our 's's to 'z's (thats zed's for you Colonials).
I am looking forward to reverting to the Queens English
BTW in case anyone has missed it what about 'LIEU-tenant' and 'LEFT-tenant' or one to guarantee to make Statesiders chuckle 'rooster' and 'cockerel'
Keep up the laughs, pip pip and cheerio!
I'd also rather see more respect for language in general; it really takes no more time or effort to write "thanks" than "thx".

Although it should be noted that neither thanks, nor any of the common in-game abbreviations for the word, takes anywhere near the time and effort that this post did. But I took the pedantry secondary powerset, and I slotted it, so I'll darn well use it!

Very reasonable. But as I sometimes try to explain to my fellow copy editors (yes, scary, I know), trying to impose reason on the language will only make you crazy.

Ultimately, we all understand each other and that is the most important thing.
A fine example of my homeland making a poor choice while the united states made a good one is 'mobile phone.' The US uses 'cellphone' from cellular and this is a sensible choice.
The phones do not hover in the air and follow you around of their own volition, they do not have little wheels and come scurrying to your side when you click your fingers (unlike the red rotary phone from the Direct Line adverts.)
These phones are immobile!
The word you are looking for is PORTABLE!
Ok, I'm done.
A good friend (originally from Rhode Island) persuaded me to try CoH back in 2005. He was on the Pinnacle server and I've been with the US servers ever since, though I migrated to Virtue about a year after City of Villains appeared.
I've never heard any comment about my (sometimes quite old-fashioned) 'British' English, though they may just have been giggling from behind their keyboards.
The language evolves, whch I believe was your point. It's not a big deal. The only surprising thing, to me, about the American variant is that there are so few substantive differences from British English. Despite the USA's vast size, we don't have as many distinct differences in regional accent as you might expect, either -- given the often vast differences one can find over a relatively small distance in the UK.
Laugh all you like at our Texans; you (speaking generally now) know as well as I do that you have more than your fair share of indecipherable accents. Unlike the English of times gone by, though, we cannot easily ascribe a particular social class to any individual based on his accent. |
Personally, I have a problem with words where more than half the letters are seemingly silent .
Let's Dance!
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

It's because measuring weight in pounds would be confusing for you. And probably expensive.
|
We got that from the Romans, pounds/shillings/pence vs their librae/solidi/denari with the librae being their primary weight measurement (The British symbols for our currency were £/s/d (the £ symbold is based on L for librae).
This is all before decimalisation that is. Now its just £ and p
And as far as measurement goes we generally think in imperial but use metric due to it making more sense.
And its "Colour" and "Armour", as a programmer you have no idea how much I resent having to use "color"
Oh and lastly, did you know we have a different cadence for our alphabet song? as yours doesn't really work if you end it on "zed"
