It's COLOR and ARMOR!
I see some things never change...
English people speak English. American people speak American. Lets just put them as two seperate languages, leave it at that, and then move onto the next shouttyscreamyhissy topic of the day. Of which there are possibly many. |
This whole topic is stupid, only created by some annoying person desperately trying to make a name for themself and cause some drama.
Evolution of language is a very interesting subject, but not from the perspective or intent of this thread.
I don't know, when people start trying to call the language "American" and not "English" I get pretty annoyed. Whether its a forumite or Valve on Half Life 2. Just because a few letters are changed does not mean the creation of a whole new language.

See what your education system has wrought, America?
Personally I blame our distinct lack of cats. If we had cats, ANY cats, we'd be WAY more awesome.
Oh wait...
It's a description of the CONTENT of most of my posts, yes. So basically a time saver.

Oh, and some other things we need to get straight:
- coupe rhymes with soup, not toupe - a car with an extra set of seats where the trunk was is a station wagon Actually, estate car I don't mind, but coo-pay just makes me laugh. Do you really say that in Britain, or is that just one more bit of silliness from the boys on 'Top Gear'? |
Coupe is a French word, we both spell it without the accent... but you pronouce it without too; why wouldn't coupe & toupe rhyme? That makes no sense!

So in England French-origin words are always pronounced in the French way. Hmm. Yes. I see.
We have to, otherwise they blockade their ports and it jams up all our roads with freight lorries that are waiting to cross the Channel.
But that's entent cordial for you. We get to grin and be sarcastic to each other while saying Agincourt and Waterloo (English) or Patay and Castillon (French) under our breaths.
Just for the record, it's 'cheque' not 'check.'
I'd guess that a rain check is a rain check and never a rain cheque though, as it is a single phrase of US origin, even though the check part refers to a non-monetary check/cheque.

I'd add James Nicholl's Usenet quote about the purity of the Englaish langauge, but the language filter will mangle it.

We might need a Klingon server before this is over...
I can see my avatar is going to fit in quite nicely.
Edit: Assuming it shows up. *taps foot*
I never really have understood your avatar, Stasis.

Avoid ambiguity, adopt clarity.
Keep it simple, stupid.
