It's a perfectly valid argument!
I had a British colleague who was complaining the other day over how Americans pronounce the letter 'Z'. For those unfamiliar, the British/Canadian/Everywhere But America way to pronounce it is like "Zed" whereas here in the US it's "Zee"
I think the crux of his argument was "It's the English Language! We invented it!" |

What do you mean the English system of measurement.
Everything is still in miles, yards, feet and inches over here in Britain and it's going to damn well stay that way! |
I always thought you had a mix of Imperial and Metric? Hell...I swear you still measure some things in units of "Stones" :P.

No one who currently speaks English was a participant in the invention of it. Spelling and word meanings change fairly often.

It's not the worlds fault you Americans can't conform to a better system of measurement! :P
Funny how the British and Canadians speak "English" and we supposedly speak "American"... yet the Americans are the only ones who still use the "English System" of measurement.
Not even the ENGLISH use the English System of measurement.... only us.... and the ONLY time that other countries use it is when or because they have to deal with us! |

Distance: Inches, Feet, Yards, Miles.
Mass: Ounces, Pounds, Stones
Area: Square feet, Square yards, Square miles, Acres
Volume: Fluid Ounces, Pints
We tend to use Metric for scientific and architectural measurements (and, for some reason, we buy petrol (gasoline) by the litre, not the gallon), but in everyday use, we're still with Imperial for pretty much everything you'd care to mention.

Yes british bodyweight measurement is actually done in stones, not kilos, pounds or any other fancy system. I believe there are 1.6 Stones to the Kilo.

Yes it's a very odd system and very, very old but for some reason we British have stuck with it.
My father just passed 1.6 stones the other day... it was painful he said.

Bloody metric.

It's because measuring weight in pounds would be confusing for you. And probably expensive.

Though actually we do include lbs in our bodyweight measurements, 14 lbs = 1 stone.
So you can be 12 stone 5 lbs or whatever.

That's because British like to go against the current.

Heck, if we're going to talk place names, let's see you pronounce Puyallup or Sequim correctly. I get to hear people try to pronounce those (and other place names from where I'm from) every day!

It's not their fault. They speak English as their primary language. You speak American. [/ QUOTE ] This is true, what you Americans have done to the English language is terrible, you've butchered it beyond all recognition. I distinctly remember shouting at Americans while riding on a tube train in London because for some reason pronouncing leicester (Less-Ter) square as Lie-chest-er really drove me mad. Admittedly the rest of the train laughed and applauded, I probably should feel bad about it but why, oh why, do you lot have one of your many accents where everything ends in a question, IT MAKES ME WANT TO STRANGLE YOU IN YOUR SLEEP! For some reason the Australia accent that does the same bizzarely has no effect on me. |

Why don't you try the rather simple and easy Teotihuacan? Tenochtitlan? Really, how hard could it possibly be that it's butchered every time I hear someone try to pronounce it? Don't even get me started on Kaminaljuyu.

But anyways, it's rather obvious what the answer is to stop quarreling, and this is because there is no section for this so I came to the conclusion that we all need to empezar a hablar en EspaƱol.

There's a place near where my mum lives that Americans seem to love pronouncing "Bow-dee-coat-ee". It's hard to write phonetically, but roughly it's meant to be "Bodycut" - Bodicote.

Oh, and the "shire" on the end of our counties? Is pronounced "shur". "Oxfudshur". Not "Ox-ford-shire". And Worcestershire? It's "Wuss-ter-shur".

Going to? I'm sorry, my dear, but it's actually coming from!
Americans can't even pronounce Arkansas correctly. Don't expect them to be able to speak furrin wurds.
