This is true, what you Americans have done to the English language is terrible, you've butchered it beyond all recognition.

I distinctly remember shouting at Americans while riding on a tube train in London because for some reason pronouncing leicester (Less-Ter) square as Lie-chest-er really drove me mad.

Admittedly the rest of the train laughed and applauded, I probably should feel bad about it but why, oh why, do you lot have one of your many accents where everything ends in a question, IT MAKES ME WANT TO STRANGLE YOU IN YOUR SLEEP!

For some reason the Australia accent that does the same bizzarely has no effect on me.

Oddly enough I'm American and I agree with this...

I wish I were joking.

Why is it litre (centre, etc) in Canada/UK, but liter (center, etc) in the US? Why the flip?
Personally, (I'm British) I always use Centre when I'm talking about something like a shopping centre (also a mall, which we pronounce like "Hal" as in "Hal Jordan") and center to refer to the middle of something.

"The British and the Americans are two peoples seperated by a common language."

Who said that first? I can't remember, but I think it was Winston Churchill...

But if you want to, my dad still says he's cuttin off the light (which is doubly weird when he says to cut on the light) and it's comin up a cloud...

Reading this reminded me of a customer service call I got while working for the phone company.

Some redneck called up looking for a number in "Var-Say-Lees" KY. Being confused with his pronunciation and thick accent I asked him to spell it. His response to my request was,

"Var-Say-Lees! Don't ya'll know whar the Nazi's surrendered in World War One ya <f-word-in> idjit?"

I was a little insulting in my response.

"First off, The city name is pronounced Ver-Sigh, not Var-Say-Lees.

Second, the Nazi's didn't surrender at Versailles in World War One. The Huns did. The Nazi's surrendered in Rheims, France in World War Two.

And finally it's not a good idea to curse at the person your asking for help. Have a nice day." <click>

Was it really Winston Churchill or the guy that did the Winnie the Pooh voice when Winston was too drunk to speak on the radio?

And while we're at it.

Whats with the slashed 7s? Don't you know you could get by so much easier if you didn't write your ones with a loop? A one is an l with a / at the top, not an l with a u at the top. Duh

And don't get my started with Zs.

(Having gone to a high school were a sixth of the graduating class were foreign exchange students, I mock "the others" without any intention of actual harm. After all, without the Brits how would we ever have had Doctor Who?)

Welcome back.
Thanks...

I was gone for nearly two years, with a single month last June that a friend paid for while I was dealing with a lot of stress and very little money, but it appears none of the posts I made then survived.

Close, but incorrect. The second i is a long e sound.

The moral of the story is when the French meet the Native Americans and then build a fort, a terrible word occurs.

I like Hell, Michigan, myself.

Hell freezes over every year.

I have a shotglass from there. (I collect shot glasses. I don't drink alcohol. I still haven't figured out why I decided to collect shot glasses.)
