*shrugs* that is for you to decide on, I am not saying its true, and I am definitely not going to pushing this full board out there, but at least it *can* give a couple of believable reasons as to why stuff has happened as it has...

It might also be a reason as to why NCsoft were not talking about selling the game, or even the astronomical price that they might have been asking.
I'm almost afraid to post this, since doubt can be a very powerful thing, but....

Could this story of possibly selling after the shutdown just be a move on NCsoft's part to help dispel the huge post-shutdown negative PR apocalypse that they know is coming?

    My reasoning is this:
--NCsoft already gave us some BS about "exhausting all (selling) options".
--The shutdown date is a definite "start" time for us to take the gloves off and bring as much PR pain as possible. Hinting at the possibility that the game could only be sold after the shutdown might be an attempt to disorganize our efforts (by causing doubt via making us wonder if we still could save the game) and lighten the ton of bricks we plan on dropping (since some players will still be wary of irritating them to the point where they don't sell).

    Thougts?

Please, please, PLEASE pick my reasoning apart and show me that I'm just plain WRONG!
I want CoH to get its wakie and be back up and running!

I'm still hoping that someone who cares will get ahold of this game. In the meantime, I'm going to go vent my frustration on some baddies (anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome to do so; I'm on Infinity server).

I mean, HELLO?! Superheroes are POPULAR right now, and this is a superhero game! They should've advertised the s*** out of CoH and They. Did. NOTHING!
  4. I don't know about backing up threads, but you might want to ask someone at The Titan Network about it.

Also, Pluto is a planet. I'll consider Pluto not a planet when the IAU makes a definition for planets that isn't completely stupid. The IAU's explanation for redefining what a planet is was that it was scientifically important to make a definition that could be consistently applied. Then they made that definition only work within our Solar System: the definition for planet everywhere else in the universe is different. Pluto would be a planet by IAU definition if it was in a solar system exactly identical to ours ten light years away.

The definition is also very hazily argued to include the Earth as a planet, even though it does not technically meet the neighborhood requirement, as the Earth does not "gravitationally dominate" the orbit of the Moon and is a satellite of the Earth only by the circular argument that the Earth is a planet in the first place. If the IAU cared about Science, it wouldn't care one way or the other if the Earth was defined to be a planet or not. It does, because it knows it can redefine Pluto's status but if it redefined Earth's status everyone would ignore them completely.

Knowing that, and generalizing the sentiment scientifically, I ignore them completely.
I find it fitting that the Kuiper belt object whose discovery sparked this debate was named "Eris" after the Greek goddess of strife.
  6. I took a short break after the news hit because it was just too hard to play.

Now I'm back in it, trying to get people to look at these forums and The Titan Network so that they can join our mission to Save CoH! I figure people who actually play may be more willing to get involved.

My search-fu is not very strong, but I'll keep poking around. Any help from search-fu masters would be greatly appreciated.

Looking through Amazon Games's jobs page, it looks like their main center of operations is in Seattle, WA (since that's where most of the new job positions are).

Thanks! My namesake was a dark/dark corr, but I rerolled her to dark/dark dom when dark control and dark assault came out.

    More on-topic;
The reason this caught my notice was this:
"Yet another social game isn't much of a threat to Zynga, but Amazon has the firepower necessary to become a legitimate competitor, thanks to its large network of customers with active accounts."
along with this: "We know that many Amazon customers enjoy playing games – including free-to-play social games".

Yes, acquiring CoX would mean shifting and/or expanding their focus a bit, but this isn't just another social game, we have one of the best communities ever, and the hybrid model allows free-to-play customers. Besides, they could probably increase the playerbase by a whole heck of a lot by adding CoH to their "Suggestions" for people who order superhero movies. Plus, Amazon.com definitely has the funds to buy the IP.

Yeah, I kinda thought that, too. However, they DID say "social games", so if they wanted to use a looser interpretation....
  10. ... can we still redeem costume codes? I thought that wasn't working anymore....
  11. I stumbled across this on Teh Internets (I should really watch where I'm going; those pop-ups can be vicious):

    http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/06/tech/g...dio/index.html

I wonder if they'd be willing to acquire a certain MMORPG with an extremely loyal fanbase....

Of course, I know just about nothing about gaming studios (actually, I may have a negative quantity of knowledge about game-producing/-supporting companies and their various attitudes/dealings), but I thought I'd bring this up so that those of you who do can correct my ignorance.

Fortunately, this is the one place on the internet where I don't have to be (too) worried about "OMG stupid Newb!" responses.

P.S.-- Here's the link to the actual Amazon page: http://games.amazon.com/
  12. Thank you for the much-needed laugh!

I wish it were truly that simple to save our game.

TV time would require A LOT of upfront money. Is it a wise business move? I don't know -- I don't run a game company. But it's been historically proven you can sell almost anything with TV ads. If people will pay for Salad Spinners and Garden Weasels, they'll buy COH/V time, even if they don't know what it is.
I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I had to respond to this. With all the popular superhero films that have been released lately, this is CoH's big chance to ask people "what if YOU were the hero/villain?". A marketing campaign with that kind of spin would take advantage of the current superhero high.

Heck, it may even be able to interest people who have become saturated and disinterested with superhero films by saying, "Okay, so what would YOU do/have done as the hero or villain? How would YOU save the day, or rule the world? What powers would YOU want to wield? What would your costume look like? Would you be a shining hero? A grim vigilante? A manipulative villain? A chaotic rogue? Would you prefer a group of friends when facing your enemies, or would you go it alone? Pick your powers. Make your costume. Choose your side. YOUR heroes. YOUR villains. YOUR WAY."

This should appeal to just about anyone who's ever walked out of a superhero film saying "yeah, but why didn't they just...?" by saying, "well, if it's so easy, why don't you try it yourself?"
... And I honestly can't believe that NCSoft wasted such an OBVIOUS marketing opportunity! I hope they see fit to sell the IP to someone who actually has a clue/gives a s***.

That qualifies as a flame war? Seriously? The vast majority of the comments I read were at least civil, and most were downright polite. I didn't see a single "yo' momma" or "GOD WILL SMITE THEE!!". This community never ceases to amaze me.

    We're not dead yet.
I like this thought. You could even call it "Tony V."
  17. Seeing this article makes my hope-o-meter go from "not really expecting a miracle" to "y'know, this crazy longshot just might work...". If it does... well, let's just say that I agree with the last two paragraphs of your article.
If we get some mainstream media coverage, other consumer groups might decide to follow our example, and that could change business-consumer relations drastically. People already use the internet to find and write reviews of various products and services, but so far, most of those reviews seem to be an accumulation of individual voices rather than a (semi-)organized group calling for action. I really wonder how difficult it is to move from one to the other. With social networking becoming more widespread, it seems to me that that step would be getting smaller and easier every day.

I understand trimming advertising budgets, or getting creative with advertising, but you can't just cut it out completely and expect your products to sell.
    .
I also agree with this statement. And I think they really dropped the ball, here; superheroes have been even more popular than usual thanks to Hollywood. They should've advertised the s*** out of this game to take advantage of that, and they didn't. I wonder how things would've gone if they had....

It's beyond good; CNN is mainstream media! We might actually have a substantial chance if they report our efforts. I've been trying to keep my optimism in check, but stuff like this makes it really hard and maybe even ... unnecessary... (*crosses fingers* please oh please...).
  20. Good point. I hadn't thought about it too much until I saw this.

I'm sort-of ashamed of not being in-game as much as usual, now. I'll have to fix that....
  21. Elec/WP/Mu Brute helping others take down EBs.
    To give more detail:
Often-times there would be requests in the Help channel and LFG channel from people who had run into an EB that the just had way too much trouble with, their whole team quit on them, no one wanted to help, whatever. Since I was red-side, and the patron arcs involve taking down an EB, there were quite a few of these requests. At this point, my incarnated-out brute can solo pretty much any EB she's run into. I'd join the team, the person would say "Great! Maybe a few more will join..." and my brute would say "Nah, we're good. Trust me." and proceed to beat the S**T out of the EB, which would usually get a :O and/or "THANK YOU!!!" in response!
I'm pretty sure I made people's days doing that.
And I was always glad to do it.

You said CNN asked. Dare I hope that that phrase means that we're getting some mainstream attention?

(also, not to hijack, but the massively.com opinion poll link is in my sig)
  23. Voted and linked in sig to spread the word to all threads I post in. I'm going to add this to my character bios in game, too (they all currently have "Help Save the City" messages, with a lot of room for more, to help non-forumites get involved).
  24. I would DEFINITELY get a stand-alone CoH game. I solo a lot anyway, so while I'd miss the occasional team antics, I'd still play if it was only me.

If anything, it makes it HARDER to save CoH, both by annoying forumgoers and diverting coordination efforts.

One of the reasons I put the petition link in my sig was to AVOID clogging the forums. Besides, this way it gets posted to every thread I comment on without diverting those threads from their chosen topic.
If you want to spread the link, I suggest that you do the same.
