Save CoH... forums.

Okay, just a random question - since the forums are going to be shut down sooner rather than later, how possible would it be for someone to code something together that essentially backs up all the current threads for posteriority?

No the remaining few folks at NCSoft have said the forums close at Nov 30th.

I don't know about backing up threads, but you might want to ask someone at The Titan Network about it.

Part of me is still expecting them to shut down tomorrow (end of the month since Zwil's departure).

It was mentioned during Hitstreaks TwitchTV session this week IIRC.

I am hoping they shut these forums down Soon™. Unmoderated forums are not what this community needs.

yea even if we start over with a new forum last thing we need to do is carry all the baggage with it.

Still, there's a lot of things on the forums that would be nice to keep around, in the event that something happens with the game, even years from now. Celebration threads, walk-throughs, template guides, etc. For reference material if nothing else.

true.

I dont think NCSoft would havea problem with that or maybe they will. I'm not sure if the laws of owner ship applies to forums and the stuff in it or not. Then again, depending on how things go, those items may be a moot and n/a to the new developed game.

To be fair, i think that overall it would be easier (in the long run) to try to save as much as you can, without being *picky* and then sanitize it later on.

Yes, that means that you will end up with a load of rubbish at the start... but it is better to *overestimate* what you need *now* instead of grabbing too little and ending up with stuff that you missed out on going into the ether once the forums do close down.

Yeah, so anyone have the computer space to store all of this stuff? They might be able to do it right now, especially with the walkthroughs and stuff.

I'm slowly backing up my 'returning player diary' thread on my blog.

but yes, it would be nice to have a *real* comprehensive backup.

I've lost several community forums over the years to various causes, and it's surprising the stuff you miss once its gone.

In the future when I'm feeling for a little nostalgia, I might come on over and read it.

It's not baggage. It's history.

Truth.

Even the most off-topic bile-strewn threads on the forums are of some value because of the one pillar of class in there that said it was a waste of time. ...Or when they turn into hilarious meme threads.

Our community has always been a close one, and even the ones who were the most venomous loved this game a lot. Plus, "editing" or somehow "pruning" out the so called "baggage" would fast become an issue of a slippery slope of where to draw the line. Better not to open that can of worms, m'kay?

Yeah I would love the forums to be saved if just for informational purposes for later.

Unfortunately I have been trying to find a topic I created around 2005 and that is already gone. Would be a shame to see all of this fade away.

A forum archive won't just be a luxury if an emulator is developed, it will be a necessity. Years from now, when the emulator team is conflicted over how a certain feature worked (or was planned to work), it will mean the difference between guesswork and accuracy.

Unfortunately, I don't know that obtaining a backup of the database will be possible.

Meaning you'd have to resort to something like a site crawler to get even a fraction of what's here. Something like that would put MAJOR strain on the server.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Not the whole database - just {heh, "just"} the threads.

I think this site has already archived the forums a few times.

[EDIT:]
Apparently it has many mirrors of the forums, but many are incomplete, so an independant backup is a better option after all.
